How do you die from being shot in the knee?

Wow what an amazing story, I would do the same.

This just boggles my mind that some jerk somewhere isn't trying to sue her, or arrest her for this though. You can't mess with nature, you can put a law on it but...

Acting weird beforehand or not,if he layed a hand on the child regardless of running out the door with the child or not he is acting inappropriatly!

Simple, perhaps from heavy blood-loss,or the shock and trauma of it? Just because you are shot in a place that houses no major organs or other bodily critical items doesnt mean you cant die from it???

She shot him in the knee and he died, that's a little odd in my mind but I'm no Doctor. I'm sure we can trust the police to get too the bottom of this. (sarcasm) Probably she will be charged for shooting the guy from behind, when he was fleeing. If what she says is proven to be accurate then I really have no problem with it. But why would he come to rob the store and decide to take the child? Maybe for protection, a human shield perhaps. I don't know but I hope it's on film.

If someone tried taking my kids, I wouldn't warn them... I'd just shoot as the element of surprise is key in confrontations. Compound that with a robbery and this man deserves no such warning (I'm not celebrating death, just the response to a kidnapping and robbery attempt). Good on this woman if the report is accurate.

Are you kidding me with this comment? She is NOT going to be charged with anything for shooting this man, even from behind. The man had her baby and she had every reason to fear that the baby's life was in danger. Where do people get these ideas about the law?

Fine.

But have you ever seen them try to park?!

I keed, I keed...in all seriousness, this is a sad deal because I don't think most people are actually mentally prepared to take another life, but hopefully it did at least prevent further tragedy.

As far as a warning shot...with the report of him behaving erratically and already heading for the door, I've got to say if I was in a position to fire on someone, I personally would have been aiming for center mass if a child was involved.

Sad stuff regardless.

This isn't good. She should have given a warning first. If she straight up shot him, that's messed up.

It isn't messed up, because she was protecting her child.
She probably didn't even know the shot would kill him.

I still think everyone should have a chance to correct their errors.
She had a few options.

1. A few shots through the air could have made him let go of her daughter.
2. A shot to the leg.
3. A verbal warning. "Let her go or I'll shoot you."

To kill a man is a desperate measure.

is that what you would have done? Do you have kids? If this happened to you, could you honestly say that you would have fired a warning shot if someone just robbed you and stole your child? Perhaps it would have been different had it been a simple robbery, but a lot of people are not going to take that chance when it comes to their children. With all the latest cases missing children, and being found dead, I think she made the right choice. Sometimes you just have to make that kind of choice in split second.

I certainly would have. First a verbal warning, then warning shots and the last measure is to shoot at him. Even then I would never shoot to kill. A shot in the leg would be just fine. I get my daughter and he keeps his life.

The guy grabbed her baby and headed out the door, man, are you freaking serious?? I do hope your comment was tongue-in-cheek.

Grab someones kid and take off, and you've immediately forfeited the right to walk upon this earth another moment, IMO.

I believe in good intentions. Everyone has the right to life. Kill a criminal and you turned just like him or even worse than him if he never killed someone.

Normally I'm all about avoiding violence, but when some guy has your 12 month old in their arms and is running out the door you don't fire warning shots.

I am absolutely against the death penalty, but this is a much different situation. This is a young woman reacting on instinct on the fly. She did well for herself and her children.

Why would you not fire warning shots? It's absolutely justifiable.

Instinct can lead to good as well as bad.

Actually, she took your #2 above. She shot him in the knee. Which usually would be enough to stop but not kill him.

So that leaves the question, what killed him? My guess either blood loss - but that would be weird because he was at the hospital. Possibly other injuries - its possible the guy that tackled him, the cops, or someone beat the stuffing out of him. He could have been high on something, had a heart attack, etc.

But, she did take your option #2. In most cases that isn't going to kill someone.

Only pull out a weapon if you intend to use it - warning shots could have made the situation a lot worse, she took back control when she fired on him... besides a warning shot demonstrates the situation was not dire enough for her to have shot in the first place, and if this man lived, his prosecuting team would have had a field day with her warning shot. Bottom line, this ain't the movies and never ever fire a warning shot. Give a warning, if you like, but shoot to kill or disable - never ever to scare.

If somebody was heading out the door with MY baby under their arm and I had a loaded gun handy, I would have shot him too, but would have made sure it was either a round in the butt or one in the head, depending on what target was bigger.

My only concern would be not hitting my baby with that bullet.

I would not care about the life of the robber nor would I worry about the posible legal consequences for split second. It would be aim and shoot.

Couldn't you chase him outside and give him a simple verbal warning, or warning shot?

First of all you are jumping to conclusions. We don't know that her story is true. Maybe he didn't touch the kid but she shot him and thought that was a good cover story. How do you know she won't be charged with anything. I think there have been stories of people whose house was being broke into but when the owner shot the guy when he was running away, outside at the time, the owner was charged with murder. Could even have been premeditated. I was going to post that I was being sarcastic when I said she PROBABLY might be charged for something, but after you making me think about it. I'm not so sure.

Here is the warning! You touch or harm a child and you will be shot! DEAD!

Hope everyone got the memo!

Seriously, this man was likely already dead before he entered the store! Think about it!

Its ALSO basic animal instinct.

It happens everyday in the Wild.

Animals Protect there young.

Do not get in the way of a mom protecting their children.
