Scenario -

ETs do visit us and are all over the place.

A thing called the internet was created a few years ago.

The internet grew very powerful, allowing for a swift education AND coordination of the masses. see the democratization of information, #occupy #anonymous, Crowdsourcing and social medias.

The curve of evolution is accelerating for humans, science and computers are gaining momentum and boosting one and each other.

We get more and more dependant on computers for everything. Heck some people believe in singularity of computing and conscience.

Then all the sudden...

An ET plugins in "their" super computer to "our" internet......

Which has you know... thousands years more advanced software in it. Or who knows what....

Few things could happen:

It's stealthy and passive manipulation, and we don't even know about it, and we're being influenced by them. Their computer most likely can predict a number of moves and happennings we probably can't even start to glimpse of.

The "drop" of knowledge in there at a much faster rate but not giving us full access, allowing for the evolution to occur.

The flood... Completely ridiculously advanced knowledge because available to all humans, all at the same time. Driving humanity either mad or making it enlighten.

What do you think?

I think it could be very possible. The internet was a creation of the military to begin with. I do find it very interesting that technology is the way we would have to explore and expand into space, there just is no other explanation on how we would go about doing it without technology. It would make sense they would somehow utilize these pre-installed loopholes into our civilization and species.

Wow, your right that is a crazy scenario
Come on man, we all know al gore invented the internet!!!! Like the aliens have that kind of technology

I feel like that too,

In theory, technology and biology can manage your expand in space. (space as in on earth too..)

It all begun when we got intelligent enough to pickup that tool. Which led to fire, which led to flying to the moon.

The only proof that biology can't be that powerful is because we base our view on biology found on earth only and currently known.

Very original and interesting idea! Quite a unique take on the 'Singularity' concept too!

S&F, all in favor of original concepts and ideas. It's probably been done in a sci-fi book but hey, what hasn't.

I think the notion that an alien computer could interface with ours is ludicrous.
Indipendence day anyone?
Unless of course they'd build one or simply software/malware for this specific purpose.

Well.. still.

We do get more and more dependant on computers for pretty much... everything.

And in a more and more interconnected ways.

Who knows what a software from a billion years old civilization might be.

There's 6 billion people with cellphones today, and it's going up like crazy. And so is internet access.

Every minute = 38 hours of uploads on Youtube. Imagine in a few years when it's going to be 50 hours every min.

Plug in all that stuff in a super computer, hundreds of thousands of years ahead in both software and processing. You can probably do a ton of magic with that.

Like having the computer emulate us and figure out just "what little thing" exacly do you (ETs) need to do to cause a massive reaction in human society.

We could be controlled like sheeps and even thoses in control wouldn't know it.

Well then what, were just all screwed? I won't go down so gently... If any "ET's" are involved well don't be shy! I can throw a nice party, all would be invited. Hell I don't have much to lose anymore, but think of what could be gained, I just drool...

Seems a bit far fetched...

SERVE

I mean, we can barely get a Mac to talk to PC's half the time, so the idea of an alien computer system (especially one more advanced), talking with ours and manipulating it seems a bit out there....

SERVE

If they wanted to implant subliminal commands or messages, I'd wager the advertising and mass media outlets would be a far more productive way to go...

SERVE

But in the longrun, why even bother? If they are an interstellar race, than even if they had the same tech we do (with the only addition of a star drive), we'd still be easy to subjugate. They could use the entire solar system as a base of operations that we couldn't touch, while they bomb us into oblivion...

SERVE

So no, I don't think they are using our own Internet against us...

Isn't that like saying we can't plug in to the first line of apple computers anymore?

Of course we can... pretty easily.

I agree it's pretty far fetched, still it's not impossible.

It might be a bit unprobable if you think their goals are nefarious, but if you look at it from another goal set, let's say.. gathering informations.. It makes a ton of sense.

A super computer with AI much more advanced than what we could do could be a huge asset for them.

Maybe the occupy movement was created by aliens? =D j/k

Again though, why? There really is no need for subtlety. They could easily take what they want, when they want, and there's really not much we could do about it, from all available evidence.

If it was hearts and minds they were after, staying secret isn't going to accomplish that.

To stay informed on the human news?

A super computer could translate all the major news in our world to their languages and easily filter out whats important for them and whats not.

To study us, A super computer could know a ton about our sociology, understand how to manipulate people and society.

That's all by being legit.. Now provided the scenario that they could have somekind of super computer with AI and hacking abilities, things could be much more interesting.

If they're hostile, of course there are better ways of doing it. But if they're hostile, they'd already have taken us down. If they can disable nuclear weapons and fly rings around our fighters, as widely reported in UFO literature, it is no contest.

So if they are not hostile, and wanted to be able to reach every single human on the planet at the same time, or at least the vast majority of them, and not in a non-interactive broadcast form, but a truly two-way communication, why not wait until the Internet has near total penetration and they can speak directly to five billion people at once through PCs and cell phones? Given the presumed super advanced computational power on their side, the only limitation is our bandwidth and our machines.

It's something fun to think about, anyway

Book some time on CNN?

Problem solved...and a lot easier than some kind of slow invasion of the Internet. If you found out that an alien ambassador was going to be on CNN tonight at 8pm, would you be anywhere else? Didn't think so. You'd be tuning in (likely while on the Internet chatting about it)...

I just hope ET has good Virues soft wear.
funny? if theyhave never had and truble with virueses.
there computer would not know what to do.
It is only a computer and can only act on what it knows.

it is very useful for ET to use the internet to gather
infomation in a way they never had before.
so if ET is real. then they are on the internet.

I feel sorry for the ET's all that spam!
and do they use the internet to find people who Like the anal probe?

CNN is an outlet of the American capitalist state. Why give it precedence? Why legitimize that particular form of imperial aggression? If they wanted to do that, they could've hijacked the radio airwaves ages ago.

Also like I said TV is non-interactive. I would be suspicious of any alien power that would use such naked propagandistic means to just blare messages at us through TV. A one way street where they just announce things, like any old Goldman Sachs lackey in your government who just lies and covers up the brazen theft going on.

No, they should use the Internet. Speak to everyone directly. Or not at all.

All of creation comes by necessity.

I can see how an idea becomes corrupted, when you interject unfounded speculation, but in this case the Internet truly was created for the faster / direct transmission of information, and it has done this job very well, regardless of who created it.

Forget speculating about the unknown. Look at an object and ask yourself not who created it, but what purpose does it serve?

If you can step back and look at all of humanity's creations, you will see that Man creates tools and devices to simplify or expediate otherwise difficult objectives. Often, as time passes, we forget who or even why some things are created, but it should be said that regardless of our inherent inability to remember too distantly into the past, new things will come.

We shouldn't immediately assume that everything we do not understand is not by our hands.

Rather, we should accept that everything intelligent that has been created on this planet, very likely came by our own will to overcome problems we ourselves invented.

tldr; If you can imagine it, you can create it. The only thing required is motivation and enough collective willpower.

Take the space program, for example. Seemingly, it serves no actual purpose, to explore space.

But the need to learn is also a driving necessity now, however nebulous it appears, it's strong enough that we collectively were able to muster up enough willpower to accomplish space travel.

Never underestimate Humanity's collective will to expand our understanding of everything around us.
