Thanks for the information...and thanks for your service. I was a Navy Corpsman once upon a time. How important was shot placement. I'm assuming extremely important if you subscribed to the theory of "one shot one kill."

If they are firing bullets at me, I am not going to be firing pellets and marbles at them.

That is a given, on principle alone.

As a home owner, all your weapons are over kill. As someone trying to over throw the government, you will definitely not succeed.

I really hate these over testosterone posts. The horrible thing about weapons in the household is that the statistics are overwhelmingly accurate...........it will cost a life in your household.

I don't advocate getting rid of your weapons. That is your right. I stand by that. However, if your a good shot, a pellet gun or sling shot will disable an assailant. Place your weapons in a secured area.

Ughh...too much testosterone.

This is far from an over-testosterone post, in fact, quite mild...so far anyways....statistics show what people want them to show, anyone taking a basic stats class knows that. If a firearm in a household results in an accident its because the gun owner did not take his/her weapon and security responsibility serious enough. Owning a fireamr is far less dangerous than owning and driving a car...check out those statistics. I think I'll leave the pellet gun and sling shot in the toy box. A secured weapon is not an accessible weapon...why bother having it. The better plan for a home invasion is to Not engage the intruder, secure yourself and your family, arm yourself and call the police. Barricade yourself, with your weapon. Better ideas include getting house alarms or a couple dogs. I own four Siberian Huskies that will take you down faster than anything else.

You don't come online into an environment like this (where they have your personal information) and tell them what you have. Keep quiet. No one needs to know your provisions. Weather it be weapons, food or water.

Stay quiet is all I'm saying. You already have a grasp on weaponry. Do you really need anyone to quantify your beliefs? I think not. You seem smarter than that.

My military background say's shut the heck up.

Edited: Yes I have my dogs to. However, they can be maced and lured to eat tainted meat.

I wasn't a sniper but Tactical Air Control Party Operator attached to grunt companies in 3rd BN 9th Marine Regt. The company corpsman and I hooched together in the bush because I also had to call in Medivac choppers and resupply...I had to hold I V bottles and apply and loosen tourniquets, etc while waiting for the sound of approaching aircraft and radio transmissions so I was as covered with blood as he was when it got bad... Even if a Corpsman was a big jerk he was held in high regard by all of the Marines.... Rifle proficiency was most highly stressed in the Corps.

I just came into the thread to say that "Training makes the shot". Ammo Makes the Shot The Rifle Make the shot. The physics of the situation makes the shot. There is a lot involved with Sniping and the Rifle is only one of them. Just thought it needed to be said. Carry on with you.

Just as accurate in MOA as the best military snipers rifles just bigger and longer range.
and if using a Mark 23 Nuclear shell one shot can kill anything.

Sorry but i am a blue water Navy Vietnam Vet

The Mosin-Nagant has to be regarded in the top 3, purely because it changed the course of WW2. Imagine if the Germans took Stalingrad, they'd have then taken Moscow and you'd then have seen maybe a different outcome in those summer months in 1944.

...We might be speaking German right now if it wasn't for the Mosin-Nagant.

They are a great firearm for the price and unlike when I owned one almost 50 years ago, there are parts. ammo and accessories for them now... They are a bit unwieldy for an old guy that hunts in woods with lots of undergrowth.but a great stand gun.

The White Death used a Nagant and smoked over 500 Soviets with it in the winter war. He also got several hundred more with a Suomi.
On sheer volume, the Nagant has to be one of the top 10 if not #1 unless civil war sharpshooters are counted as snipers. As far as capabilities go, for targets in heavy cover the .50 BMG is #1.

What is this based on?

A sniper's rifle is only as good as the sniper behind it. You can tag a guy at 800 meters with a .270 deer rifle that doesn't make it a sniper specific weapon for one and it doesn't make it bad rifle.

So what is the criteria here?

Really Bro? NICS check much? Only on this paranoid forum do people worry about stuff like that. Unless you made your firearms yourself , uncle sam already knows what you have. It's amazing how little most people know about how much the government can see... #1 there is NOTHING you can do to hide and #2 you're not important enough for anyone to give a damn #3 if you are important (see #1).

Back to the topic , as far as I'm concerned most Remmy 700 based weapons systems are hard to beat for precision , unfortunately they fall short on firepower. The M14 based systems would be my personal favorite , an accurate 7.62x51 in a semi platform would meet or exceed 90% of mission profiles and lets the shooter get away with humping one rifle instead of two , this is evident by the recent transition to the various Knights Armament systems being fielded today.

As far as the SASR is concerned it's pretty much akin to killing an ant with a sledgehammer... most people have only experienced it through video games and don't really understand it's application. We're talking about a weapons system with 11,500 ft-lbs of muzzle energy ... think about that for a minute.

Muzzle Energy

(5.56x45) M16a2 1315 ft-lbs with a 55gr projectile

(7.62x39) AK47 1560 ft-lbs with a 125gr projectile

(7.62x51) FN FAL 2727 ft-lbs with a 150gr projectile

(.50) Mk82a1 SASR 11,500 ft-lbs with a 660gr projectile.

You guys are lucky I didn't enter my ruger 10 22 into the fray... 140 ft-lbs with a 40gr projectile. It's a beast!!!

I'm impressed with your knowledge. However, do you remember signing up to ATS? Yes, your information is stored and you have an IP address that is easily traceable. I won't go into weapons talk. It does not interest me anymore and my military days are long past. Survival is a personal thing.

You will be fine. Best regards to you. No disrespect here.

If you're not going to talk about weapons then why are you posting in the weapons forum?

My military weapons experience was nuclear. Can't carry around a nuke these days. Gave up my nuke carrying card long ago. Still weapons qualified in smaller arms. You know...the little ones that sound like firecrackers.

Sniper Rifles are the scariest of guns. A sniper can kill someone, and be so totally removed from the person he kills that it feels like nothing. Theres no interaction; just a pull of the trigger which hits a target many meters away...

Actually when you speak with men who have been snipers one of the things they'll tell you is that being able to see the expression in a man's face before you blow it off isn't exactly a disconnected feeling. It's very personal.

That's not my question.

My question is, if you're not going to discuss weapons in a weapons forum(be they nukes or small arms) then why post at all?

If you read the entire thread, you would not be asking me your question. Please review the full thread before making a post. I made a very poignant post. Please read, you will understand where I was coming from. It's not that many pages.

Thank you for your service.
