What if you don't have the money, connections, time, and/or resources to learn such new skills?

Then make sure you stay fit, there'll always be strong and willing people needed to work the fields for growing crops and tending herds

As far as my "skills" go:

Artistic/creative
Cook
General labor/ usefulness

But you probably wouldn't find that out as I would likely avoid your settlement and try to find my own way.

1. The power mongering/ alpha crap would drive me right back into the wild. It only takes 3 people to start up the inevitable worst aspects of human society and if you have a whole community started - you've already begun the process right back to where we are today. Because, no one will really listen to new ideas and it doesn't take long for greed, jealousy, self importance, religious zealotry and control issues to fester and grow with rapidity.

2. You may not be "sitting ducks", but your community will certainly be tested repeatedly by roving gangs and others who seek to take whatever it is you have. And sooner or later they will likely win as the situation gives into the "only the strongest survive" inevitability. You might think you're a strong community, but your values would sadly be your downfall as the larger gangs with a criminal mindset just don't care who gets hurt.

I certainly don't have a good chance on my own, but because people naturally suck and humanity just can't make it work, neither does your society, and I don't want to see it all fall apart, get pushed into the community's failure and go out that way.

Well I am glad we won't be short on cooks. i am nto the greatest cook I am glad there are so many good ones.

I would be better at keeping all safe and shooting people or wahtever. Also Bringing a laptop with all the survival books and other books loaded on it will be usefull i think.

I have extensive background with electrical and electronic systems. I hunt, fish, and forage for my own food. I am an accomplished tailor. I can tan hides and make clothing and shelter of them. I am an accomplished winter survivalist.

I could keep going but you get the idea.

So what you are saying is :- If a family who are starving come to your gates with no skills you would let them starve. So you become the evil elite ..

The only real question is, who has a working shower?

Showers are easy, I could set one up for you in just a few hours. That time includes scavenging for the needed items.

I'm amazed that there are so many people who could actually contribute usefull skills to survive

Lots of Hunters, Farmers, Craftsmen and Fighters to survive a SHTF scenario

And here I thought we were a species of lawyers and investment bankers

Maybe we aren't doomed to become extinct after all... thats really astonishing.

Nice thread Graceunderpressure
gave me hope.

I've been blind since birth, carry a Braille bible and can kick the living sh*t out of any 30 guys armed with automatic weapons who are hiding behind barricades.

Oh....wait

Nope, that was a movie I saw.

I'm good with movie dialog, and I'm gifted at making your wife wish she'd waited a bit longer before saying "yes" to whatever it was that you promised her.

wow... really hope i don't end up in the same area as the sweet voice guy.

As for the guy wanting advice on skills look up a thread called top ten survival books or something it has ten links to some good books all on pdf.

I mean seriously....sweet voice... seriously... nah I am a guy who likes his women, but in a survival situation there are more important things to consider.

Saying that being a decent human is the most important in one breath and saying that evolution, which has taught survival of the fittest, has taught us nothing because a slightly socialist agenda is being put forward in the next... wow.... mixed up much?

Thanks for the advice

Let's see if we can recap. We've got many fix it people, many security/warfare types, and it everyone is willing to propagate the species? Can anyone grow food? Can anyone fix something without a parts store? Anyone have a real source of energy? Can anyone make effective weapons?

I can grow food, scavenge to make repairs on most mechanical items. Give me a standard hand drill, a bicycle, an innertube, and some wires and I can charge a twelve volt battery. I can also make recurve bows of various woods, as well as arrows for them, and am always willing to propagate.

I'm a Freight forwarder. I have successfully bent over Singapore Airlines, Cathay pacific and Malaysia Airlines to name a few to ensure our company is THE number one perishable freight forwarding company. I keep our margins as low as possible to ensure our clients have room to move in their fresh seafood market, especially with a fluctuating dollar, and we are currently crushing all the competition.

I drive a very hard bargain. I will be THE negotiator. Imports, Exports, trade of any type, with any individual. Once your community has its feet on the ground I will be ensuring our trade with other communities and travellers always fairs better for us. I will also go that extra mile (maybe literally in this scenario) to ensure what is required is gained.

Oh, and I can hit a jar with a .22 rifle from 100 odd meters away. I don't know if that is any good but my mate was shocked and awed that I did it. Three times consecutively.

Finally, I know a few different types of martial arts. Can use and teach these.

Depending on the mortality ratio, compound living will eventually be necessary for humans.

The only reason we can survive at the population we have now is because of mass production farms, gmo and hormones and vaccines that are pumped into the livestock.

It is easy to pretend to be a lone wolf and you will live off the land, but the fact is without agriculture and farm communities growing and raising food,
any remaining food supply will be deleted pretty quickly.

the success of our species was entirely built on this concept.

LOL I love the picture you paint but the reality is most of you people will be stopped long before the gate, won't be wanted and won't be needed. Worse for you, in some cases it will be policy to simply snipe you as you walk into kill zones set up in designated areas surrounding the compound. You think I am sick or kidding, right?

Let me clue you in, most of you have proven time after time after time, test after test that in order for humanity to move forward, in order for humanity to go to benefit from the technologies and lifestyle that the New World Order plans, most of you have to go away.

You think you are special; of some consequence? Okay, get off your ass and do something because it is probably already too late and those who have been planning this are well along with their plans.

Now, am I lying?

You would let me through the check point because...

-I can hunt/trap..basically live off the land
-I can sew
-I can cook ...and I can prepare the animals I've trapped/ hunted (like remove fur the and stuff)
-I can fish ...

Yeah, those are FOUR reasons why you'd let me in.

*starts to wonder why she's even bothering to try get past checkpoint*
