I was just in the perfect mood for this story. I'm sure you know how, occasionally, you see something that is so ridiculous that laughter is required, then you say "Wait a minute, maybe....," then you go back to laughing.

Welcome to this, a perfect example.

Lawmaker Files Bill to Repeal State Ban on Dwarf Tossing in Bars

State Rep. Ritch Workman says ban on tossing in bars limits employment opportunities for little people

The cringe-inducing activity was outlawed in 1989, when national controversy over dwarf tossing prompted the Legislature to ban it in bars for safety reasons, the Current reports.
How did we get a national controversy over this?

While at least one previous lawsuit filed by a little person sought to repeal the law for employment reasons, others including the president of Little People of America are opposed to the new bill. "In general, if HB 4063 does threaten to undo the protection afforded people of short stature against dwarf tossing, we are concerned, and we would be against legislation," said Gary Arnold. "The ban on dwarf tossing protects the entire dwarf community."

My mind is spinning. What does the law protect the entire dwarf community from? How does this compare to the "Keep your laws off my body" of the abortionist community? "The abortionist community?" The "vertically-enhanced community" of the NBA? Could President Obama introduce this as part of his jobs bill?

HELP! Tell me something to stop the spinning this story has caused. Even the proposing legislator spells Rich with a "T." This post is degenerating into a stream-of-semi-consciousness. Offer some intelligent comments, please.

I know practically nothing about this, but I have seen/read about it before.

I wouldn't actually promote this sort of thing, but from what I can recall, the lil guys were paid rather well, beforehand.

If you can pick me up, and if you wanna wrap me up in velcro, and throw me into a wall, if the money's right, I might just say 'Ok!!"

No point in outlawing something though, if all parties involved are willing participants.
So I fully agree:

There has been a show on in the UK called 7 Dwarfs about 7 dwarfs performing in UK pantomime (guess which one). they follwed the group over a few weeks of the pantomime season. It was a great show and really interesting to see how these guys have to live. The amount of abuse they received from the general public was pretty shocking and upsetting. People in bars who are drunk feel they can just pick up these guys and throw them around for their own entertainment. .

just shorter people, trying to make it in the world.

I recall years ago, the " World's toughest Bouncer" competition, with Mr T ( wayyy before A Team).
He had to jump over a bar, run through bar tables, break down a door or two and ring a bell, all timed.
the last event was tossing a "small" man for distance.

Mr T won that event.

Doesn't Dwarf Tossing have a whole other meaning in the pron industry?

"The ban on dwarf tossing protects the entire dwarf community."

Where does this guy get off making a silly statement like that?

How does it protect the entire community when the only ones getting tossed are the ones getting paid for it? If they accept the job and consent to getting tossed, how does this threaten the entire community?

The only ones getting tossed are the ones who consented to being tossed. Its not like this legalizes anyone picking up dwarfs off the street and tossing them whenever they want to, only those dwarfs who choose to be a part of the dwarf tossing contest.

They should take that spokesman and toss him out the window for making such bone-headed statements.

Wff?

president of Little People of America

There is one???

As for my opinion. The tradition of tossing the dwarf is an outstanding british army tradition which, if legislated against, will just force it underground (to the mines, ayeeeee hooo!)..

When I was 20, (1985) I went to a bar in Orlando that had "Dwarf Bowling". The dwarf was in a padded suit, with a handle and you threw him down a oil slicked padded alley into huge foam rubber pins. It cost $5 for two tosses, you got two extra tosses for a strike. The one dwarf I spoke to said that he could make up to $2000 on a weekend.

When this law was enacted, the people who protested it the most were the dwarfs. a group of them went as far as to file suit calling the law discriminatory. At that time I was dating a law student (and topless dancer) who was helping to fight the law as a class project.

The reason I mentioned topless dancing was that right after this, Duval County (Jacksonville) passed a law banning topless dancing in establishments that sold alcohol. An unintended concequence of this law was that it allowed full nude dancing in places that didn't serve alcohol. Since there was no alcohol, there was no age limit on who could go into the full nude clubs. My girlfriend at the time also tried to help have this law blocked. On a military payday weekend she and the other girls who worked at the same club could make between $1500 to $4000. This kept her days open for her classwork. The place she worked had a good reputation, which was one of the reasons that military guys went there. There was not a girl who worked there that I would have a problem with introducing to my Mother.

"Lawmaker Files Bill to Repeal State Ban on Dwarf Tossing in Bars "

These kids these days.
I went to school with a Dwarf friend of mine. We did some seriously crazy stuff in highschool. Too much beer. He is now studying for his PHD.

But I never thought about tossing him.

There's a difference between a midget and a dwarf, dwarf's find the term midget offensive.

Dwarf and midget are sometimes used synonymously. That is because these two terms refer to people that are vertically challenged. However, the terms dwarf and midget are not similar. They are totally different from each other.

Back in 1975,I was still married to my first husband.
I am 5'1" tall and he was a full 12" taller than me.We
had a big fight one night and he physically picked me up
and threw me across the room.I landed against the baby's
crib and was bruised.
I know what it is like to be thrown across a room. I swore
it will NEVER happen to me again!
About the dwarf tossing,it should be left to the individual to
decide if he/she wants to be tossed.I am against it though.

The only reason I imagine a dwarf would want to be thrown across a room is for money. When there arn't too many jobs for dwarfs then some may feel forced into it just to satisfy the sick humour of other's. Not exactly what we should accept in a so called civilised society.

Nobody was forced into the Dwarf Bowling as a matter of fact dwarves came up with the idea and owned the company that operated it in the bars. The guy I threw down the lane taught Physics at a local college and worked the bowling on the weekends to earn money for a Porshe. The only way that I remember that is that I wasn't drinking at the time and I asked him if he could adjust the seat on a Porshe so that he could reach the pedals?

If a dwarf wants to be tossed, why infringe his or her liberty by legislating against it?

But,if dwarf tossing was some kind of craze like"happy slapping"then yeah,that's not good.It isn't though-its consensual apparently.

They even let dwarfs live in their own little mushroom village in commie China you know.
But it's actually a weirdo dwarf theme park...

Not good.
Dwarf tossing is less humiliating IMO.
