What the article fails to mention is how much the workers are paid to produce it. If the vendor is making profit from these, then you can bet that the workers are paid next to nothing.

iPads are more than likely produced for less than this....you are paying for the badge, like when you buy a Merc.

Think of where iPads are made, the volume they are produced in etc etc. Apple has been ripping off the gullible consumer for decades

how do u know that the workers r paid to nothin?

truth is that it is possible to make and sell cheap...but the big guys don't want people to know that ...turns out only 16% of it is manufactured in india..assembly and testing in india...

maybe this is just a case that people r indeed overpaying for things maybe..just maybe

Sorry, but you are mistaken. The iPads do demand quite a premium in order to provide Apple with a nice profit margin, but it's nowhere near as cheap to produce as you're suggesting...

Just over six months ago, it was around $325 for the base iPad 2.

I don't know, as I haven't yet looked into this particular case deeper yet. However, it is common knowledge that cheap goods are often produced in sweat shops where the workers are mistreated and underpaid for their work. I am not saying this is the case, but its very likely. Especially considering how corrupt the Indian government is.

I smell BS on that.
Its not quite as simple as saying "apple says it pays $325 to produce the ipad2"

Apple own PA semi...which make the chips. This means PA Semi make profit which is Apples profit, which means the chips are almost worthless to Apple cost wise.

Many of the other parts of the ipad are made by firms owned by Apple or their subsidiaries.

Its not a true cost that you linked to, its the cost Apple want you to see to justify the prices they demand.

the current government is quite corrupt..sweat shops hmm...it's jointly developed by the gov and Data Wind, a british company..just because the chinese don't mind sweat shops doesn't make it the standard everywhere else

The article says that the Indian Government is subsidizing the price charged to students.

So the Indian Government are paying more than $35.

These devices are not that expensive to produce and are comprised of mainly a motherboard which is built/populated by machines which is then plugged into an LCD display. which is also built by machines.

It would be nice to see the US Govt. doing this for our students but nah, we've got wars to pay for !

Apple was voted as the worst polluter in China compared to any other foreign corporation, the working conditions are awful as well. I don't think you can get much worse really. As someone said, all you are paying for is the brand for the most part, apple could sell products in this price range and still make a profit probably...but people are gullible enough to pay obscene amounts for them, much of the time for egotistical and social status reasons..so why bother?

Foxconn (Hon Hai) produce most electronics...including the iPad and iPhone.
Why do they have these HUGE contracts......

Because they use slave labor...simple!
Between Jan 2010 and May 2010, ten of their employees committed suicide because of conditions.

No loo breaks, no talking during their 12 hour shifts, constant harassment.

The volume at which they produce, and the slaves they use to produce the products keep costs to a bare minimum.

Slave labor is very real in the 21st century....its just overlooked here in the west as we want the shiny gadgets they produce. SAD...PATHETIC...are two ways id describe the industry and mindset of the human race.

This is why India is quickly taking all the engineering, IT, development jobs. They are all college graduates, they focus on academics, and the Indian government is helping students with free education and subsidizing tools for that free education.

In the USA tuitions are going up, text books are going up, financial aid is becoming more expensive.

Also, FYI, Apple uses "slave labor" for the manufacturing of all it's tablets, phones, etc. They are made in Shanghai and the worker makes around $3-$5 a day.

HTC is the only company I would buy a tablet or phone from.

Thank you..../Corporate profits are maximized by every thinkable method of dodging the goverment, ripping the people, and drubbing the work force.
Welcome to profit driven capitalism at its worst.
This is precisely why the goverment needs to step up and protect the consumers.
Childrens education is not a matter of profit the indian goverment recognizes the true strength of its people is their knowledge base.
I applaud tyhe attempt to bring this product to the kids at less than market prices.
Not only does this bode well for the kids, but the country is making an investment in the future that will undoubtedly oay off big time.
This kind of incentive makes me wonder WHF is WRONG with our own brand of thinking that we are so consumed with selfish motives 24/7 ?
The goverment should always be the voice of reason and the initiator of such badly needed programs.
They have the responsibility to be the buffer between the predations of big capitalists and the people, NOT in BED with them!

Uhh, they say retail it will be $60, the tablet Im using now cost $59... From china, where the components are all manufactured separately and procured by different companies for their unique assmebley, Ipad included.

They dont mention processor specs, but ram is 256 mb, this has 512. This is 800mhz shared.

Lol.. both have resistive lcd, and Ive screwed mine up somehow but I dont see this as the worlds cheapest tablet... but given the price you can guarantee support is non-existent.

Well, you get what you pay for. Slave labour? Its all slave labour unless you build it yorself.

I really need a new TS if thats what i killed and not the damn decoder chip

It's about time, because it doesn't cost much to make an smart-phone, or even a modern refrigerator.
in fact the last time I checked, it only cost about $70.00 to make a fridge with 26 cu. ft.

i am waiting for a decent linux based tablet to come out. anyone know of one?

i don't use Apple devices, and prefer to not have to have wireless providers involved in my tablet pc usage.

Android is linux.

All android tabs are linux.

ROOT the tablet, install a terminal app and youre on a nix console.

Or install the android sdk, you get to use ADB which allows you to basically connect to your tablet via your PC, at a terminal level.

hard to navigate most times, so I

alias ls='ls -color=never' and Im set there

god I hate tablets tho, 2 now, 1 bricked (ployer) and 1 without touchscreen (eke m009s).

I should just buy an expensive one, and .. ya know what, no... I just hate tablets...
