It's the same stupid types of people making braindead threads on the board too. Membership is not what it once was. I think chat should require more than 200 posts actually. Make it 500, or a thousand. Make these ass clowns earn their stripes for real. If they don't like it... If making a decent contribution first is too much for them.. tough! They are probably the type of people we DON'T want in there in the first place.

To close chat because of one or two individuals is ridiculous. Why make everyone suffer? I always behave in there as do most of the people in chat. I don't feel we should be punished for someone elses actions.

Not to complain or anything. I enjoy ats quite a bit, but I calls em how I sees em: ATS has a habit of punishing the many for the actions of the few. Entire threads being # down for reasons like "it has become a name calling battle"... Ok, well, name calling is supposed to be against the rules. Why not warn, and eventually ban, the offenders, delete their posts and replace it with one of those ats billboards that tell you how they violated the tnc, and let the rest of us party on? I mean, I don't actually believe this is what's happening, but I could definitely agree that SOMETIMES IT SEEMS LIKE "someone" doesn't want a topic discussed, so they send in 2 people or more to argue incessantly (or could be just one person arguing with themselves??), and before long, they get their wish and the thread is closed due to the arguing, and mysteriously, the members involved are not punished nor are their posts deleted. Almost as if to say "see? Here's the evidence! People WERE indeed arguing... But in this particular case, we just didn't Feel Like punishing these members." Well, maybe if they had actually ENFORCED their own TnC, other people wouldn't get "turned off" by the arguing, and it could become a civil discussion again.

Strangely, one of the DARK KNIGHT threads ended up this way... I think it was the thread started by DK himself. Thread closed because its become a name calling match. Ok, well how's about you DO YOUR JOBS and deal with the troublemakers???

Sometimes it seems that certain members cannot be touched by the mods. Like they have some kind of special license, or dare I say, BADGE, that allows them to get away with whatever...

Ok, I'm now removing my tin foil hat
And removing the contents out of my tin foil wallet, and putting them back into my leather one

*Whispers* "pssst... they don't want us to unite..."

Woah, what the.....was that?? *Pulls off my shoes and gives them each a good shake, out falls a tin foil plastic baggie, contents unknown* Ahaa, I knew there was something I forgot to remove! Ok, back to normal now!

Im sorry but I have to agree with you. But not to keep the more contributing members out that have lower post counts. Iv been surfing the threads since my return and have noticed alot of one liners and posts that just are just plain pointless. Looks like some are just posting to post (like me), for example I have a low post count and I wont make the cut but Im more of a reader than a poster and I do frequent chat often when Im home and off the road so yes it will effect me but my world wont end. But we as in us this collective of open minded human beings choose to frequent this great site and many have for years to further our knowledge and understandings of the world in its cultures religions and to further expand our minds in things that we have never heard of but wish to learn and understand. So yes it dose bother me that "Chat" has been band again. In the end I as in me will accept the out come of this debacle but it will not lower my opinion of the mods or the owners because we are in their back yard and I will play by their rules to continue with in this great site.

May be I should of started with
"My fellow Americans"

Since some people might have missed it this is what SkepticOverlord posted earlier in this thread:

The issue is two-fold.

Yes, there has been a rash of immature un-ATS behavior in chat lately, which is part of the reason.

A more significant part is the identification of at least two security "holes" in the chat solution we're using. I'm currently investigating alternatives.

Judging by some of the comments here, not everyone read that.

My question is...... What are the Mods in the chat for to begin with??? There is enough of them to monitor chat most of the time, instead of saying T&C inside the chatroom they need to PM the offender with a warning of a ban..... Seriously how hard is this to impliment?

All the times that I've been in the chat I have barely ever seen anyone do anything worthy of stopping the whole chat and I know a lot can back me up on this because there are some here that go there more than I do.... Seems as if someone came in some random night and started spamming some dumb things as to ruin it for everyone, I just can't believe that's all it takes to shut it down..... It's a shame really....

You guys aren't seeing the bigger issue. ATS chat has security issues they are addressing.

There will always be an age limit to get into a bar. There is no age limit to get into chat. There is no age limit to join ATS.

I have never been able to get into chat. I believe by addressing the security issues they have, they will come up with a feasible solution soon. By the amount of static you guys are generating, I can guess they are working on the problem, but face it guys, how much do you pay to chat in ATS? Seriously. Sure, if your ISP goes down, you can complain, because you have a monthly bill to pay for internet access. If ATS goes down? Do you pay a monthly fee? (BTW, ATS can't go down, they have 7 redundant servers now, so don't worry.) If ATS chat goes down? I'm not paying out of my pocket, nor can I access it, so I'm not complaining much, either. Just making a few points.

Why aren't you complaining about the ATS Uploader, in (gasp) beta? Why doesn't that get fixed right away? The squeeky wheel gets the most grease, aye?

I will, however say this:

The people protesting the MOST are the tried and true members of ATS. They have high post counts, a decent flag count, and stars out the wazzoo. THEY are the ones that utilize chat THE MOST. They are the golden members, know the T&C's, know this is a PRIVATELY owned site, and they ABIDE by the rules. Their suggestions are not unreasonable at all. I couldn't disagree with their suggestions at all, they are all viable solutions for the trolls in chat. They are all returning members, and they 'sticky' the traffic that advertisers want. If you can show advertisers that you have a solid, loyal member base, then that's what really pays the bills.

Think about it.

Then, I'll go one step further with this suggestion:

Promote those chat-a-holics who are loyal members.

Simple solution.

Config the chat server to allow members ABOVE a certain post count (whatever criteria), to be a chat mod. Let the chat police itself, and the REAL mods watch the chat mods to make sure they don't abuse their power, and only gently guide the trolls. So far, there are the owners, the super mods, and forum mods, and everyone on staff does double duty in chat. Make one more rank in the hierarchy, a chat mod, below everyone else, but willing to police the chat. I know there are volunteers already.

Don't tell me it's not possible. It's software. Meh. Find a programmer.

Thanks. Good job. Amazing team. I'm impressed.

Can't all the regulars just find a nice quiet IRC server where you can be your OWN moderators, lock the chat down to whoever you want (requests via U2U perhaps) and enforce bans, moderated chat (+m the channel, only +v or voiced can talk) etc etc?

There are plenty of good IRC servers that hide your IP address, masking it out so you're safe...

Even better start your own IRC server, there is free irc server software available and I'd assume there are regulars who do have stable connections etc...

I dunno, sounds like addiction to me

edit - Or be feeeeedded your fixes right nao!!
it's back up so I spose all is well that ends well!

Abuse by keyboard... really? I have a bit of trouble overreacting to what people I don't know type to me.

And I wouldn't read hours of banter to find what whosis said to whatsis and try to bring specific individuals to task.
It's much easier to throw a switch and let everyone know they are watching.

I am amazed at how carefully this site is monitored to keep up the ethos... good job owners and mods.
