I have a 10yo son who has a thing about watching the moon from his bedroom window... he has done it since he was about 3yo..

a few months ago he came into me + said "mum.. the moon is up-side-down"

seriously i couldnt tell u if it was or if it wasnt for the life of me..

anyway.. he has said it a few times since then + again a few nights ago when we were out driving at night...

"look mum... see... its up-side-down again"

i told him i couldnt tell.. + he replied "well can u ask someone on that 'secret website' u go on"

so here i am... asking for my son.... has anyone else noticed this....?

im in Sydney Australia incase thats usefully information.

It's even more interesting when it comes from the smart ones...

All I have noticed here in MI, USA, is that the moon has swung closer to earth. Nothing about it being backwards though, that is peculiar. (Scratch of the chin)

Can you take video?

Countries in the different hemispheres see the Moon from a completely different vantage point from each other.

In the northern hemisphere the first quarter looks like a growing D, while in the southern hemisphere it looks like a C.

In the northern hemisphere the last quarter looks like a C, while in the southern hemisphere looks like a D.

but TODAY WAS LIKE A UPSIDEDOWN C WAT THE

there's an idea... will do next time he tells me its up-side-down.

he is a smart kid.. top 10% in the country in his grade for maths.. in grade 2 he was invited to a grade 5 science weekend at another school.. many awards for science + maths.. has been saying since he was 5yo that he wants to be an astronomer when he grows up.

believe me .. if it was just a random comment from my kid that knew nothing about space or science i wouldnt be posting asking this.

Here is another thread about this. I think in about page 5 or 6, there is a good explanation for this occurrence.
So your son is probably correct, but nothing to be worried about.

Moon Rotating?

Does your son view the moon with a telescope in his room? One of the most surprising discoveries first telescope owners will find is that images may appear upside-down or backwards depending on the type of telescope. The first thought is the telescope is broken – when in fact it is working perfectly normal. Depending on the type of telescope images may appear correct, upside-down, rotated, or inversed from left to right. He may be confused at the difference between observing the moon with the naked eye and a telescope.

I think you will find that it's not "upside down". It looks different as it goes through it's cycles

yep he said that is how it is suppose to look.. but there are some night that its not like that... that the C shape has dropped to the bottom so i looks like a U... + that he has never seen the moon do that until this year.

he's going to tell me the next time he thinks it looks wrong so i can take a picture + post it on here.

I'm in Sydney and have lived at the same place for 7 years. Last night the moon was beautifully framed at the end of the street, setting towards the west at around 10pm and it was stunning in its appearance. It looked more like a rising full moon in size and colour but it was in a U shape. First time I've seen it looking like that whilst setting, it was rather grand and several people along the street were out the front of their homes appreciating the scene. It had a wow factor about it. Probably caused by dust in the skies out in the west. As for the U shape... I dunno !

It's unlikely it would of changed so much over a couple of nights but this may help explain it a bit better.
en.wikipedia.org...

It reminds me of the smiley face moon photo taken in Sydney a couple of years back. It's perfectly normal and no need to be alarmed.

thanx for the wiki link... will give it to him to read tomorrow.

there's no alarm here... he's just a kid that needs answers to things.. and wont shut up until he understands the reasons behind things... (wiki link should shut him up for awhile-thanx) with no doubt .. expect him to be on ATS sometime in the furture..
