Would you sacrifice life as you know it, for the chance to possibly colonize another planet and restart human civilization?

With the technology currently available, it would take decades, possibly longer, to travel to the next closest star. Then hope theres a planet within the habitable zone for us to try to live on.

Everyone in your family would be making a huge sacrifice, and some of the family would parish before the journey was complete. Then I've always wondered this too: what if we travel that far, make the great sacrifices, only to find out either:
A. Humans can't survive the atmosphere or conditions of the planet. or
B. There is already a different race of beings inhabiting said planet, and we end up stuck there or worse. or
C. We setup camp and begin the restart process, and it goes exactly as planned.

Hopefully someday in our lifetime, we will unlock a secret of science and allow traveling vast distances in a fraction of the time it takes now.

We can only hope,

Sirhc

Hopefully they wouldnt jump off a building, cause it seems they might have a following. Just Kidding!

But really, what would YOU do? Could you make that decision? Today? Now? If you were asked and it was a true possibility? What say ye?

What's the point in starting life somewhere else on another planet? We can't even treat the planet, or indeed each other in the correct manner where we are at present.......................

I would hope that we would be able to protect our home planet for millions of years before we would need to leave.. sacrificing my life to save our species or planet? I would do it. heck we all die anyways might as well die a legendary hero

In my case no, or not at the moment anyway. I have family obligations that prevent such indulgences.

However, when i'm in my 50s yes, children will be adults by then and the reaper will be shuffling into view in my rear view mirror anyway, so why not?

If such a thing became possible there would be no shortage of volunteers. Not from the fat TV and fast food addicted west but from the poorer nations. These voyages are always undertaken by the persecuted and the desperate.

I would really like to think so.............But I think there has to be one almighty kick up the backside for people to realise and hopefully work as one....................wouldn't that be a dream come true after all these years and years and years........................

It would be easy, just make greed a banish-able offense. Get greedy, get gone!

Oh, and no mimes either.

Alot would have to change here first.

Humanity would have to unify and every government would have to have the same goal.

Also relativity is going to make it so that the people on earth will have to say goodbye forever to those people heading to the stars because they're never going to see them again. Even should a ship return with the original crew, which it could due to relativity, every one they knew on earth would have died hundreds or even thousands of years ago.

Sure, but with a twist, only if I could remain alive and be the leader of this civilization. I can convince everybody I'm God by filming their creation and documenting it and stuff, then I will be in charge of the world. With me as leader, I can do my best to fix all of the problems with the world and have a smoothly running, utopian society.

What's the point in leaving this planet? It's only under threat from ourselves. Let's stay here, fix things up, no need to go off elsewhere and sacrifice things and take risks.

As a person evolve during his life also society evolves. If you look at what is happened this year in Africa/London and today on wall street it seem that the lower clases are getting feed up with the lies and crap. The old is crumbling right now to leave place for something new. One day manipulation will not be allowed because everyone will know when you lie. Internet is the start of a perfect comunication. A training place where you can be true to who you are and not have to keep up mask just because other people around you aren't as tolerant as they should be. Every person has the posibility to chose who he/her want's to be. Try to be the best you, you can be. Take one step at a time. I don't belive we need another planet. This one can be perfect and we can clean it up. The reason we haven't is because our perspective on what is right and wrong is off. If we get unity instead and work together without our ego:s getting in the way we can work miracles. Technology/knowledge is a tool neither good or bad.

No one would, and ever will, go on a decade-long journey to some planet WITHOUT 100% certainty that the time/effort would be worth it - only an idiot would make a trip to a light years distant planet and then upon arrival find out the planet is not habitable.

So why should someone make such a journey if there is even a slight chance the planet is inhabitable or there are hostile inhabitants on the planet already?

The ONLY way i can think of actually taking such a risk is if the Earth's destruction would be 100% in-evitable, then people would set out on a trip discovering other planets, with a remote hope to find another Earth. But only because there would not be another choice.

Would I sacrifice everything in order to colonize another planet? Yes. Without hesitation. I'd go tomorrow if they'd let me.

Colonizing another planet would be like being one of the first settlers heading out west during the great westard expansion. It will be tough. It will be dangerous. But it will be one hell of an adventure.
