I actually posted this in another thread
Located Here
I wanted to credit the original thread for sparking this memory.
And I thought this was interesting enough to have its own discussion

I did not create that thread

Please pay your respects

I remember when I was in 1st grade (1991)
I remember the year cos right outside my class room there was big giant numbers declaring the new year
"1-9-9-1"

I looked at it everyday from New Years to the End of School that year...

In the spring of that year...

We had a week long New Madrid "event" (preparedness)
Now I'm not talking regular EQ drills...
I'm talking down to the details NMFL

I also remember that year a lot of people were spooked about the possibility of it happening...

My mom is a teacher now, I asked her did they educate the kids about NMFL...
No, they just do the regular ole EQ drills...

I remember other kids getting scared cos of it...
Thats possibly why they no longer talk about it?

But I wasn't scared, I was highly interested in it, learning all I could.

I been expecting that thing to pop for the last 20 years...
it hasnt yet.
I hope it doesnt...
But even then "they" were expecting it to go...
"ANY DAY NOW!!!!!!!"

There was even a psychic who "prophesied" it would go in that year

"They" were expecting severe damage to infrastructure
Pretty much they described all around "Armageddon"

Now according to the maps I seen nowadays...
My location... Eastern Kentucky is not in the zone...
But according to what they said in 1991... we were...

It would not suprise me if the writer for the movie 2012 was either a student in my class
horrified by their experience... Or the person responsible for the curriculum taught to us lol

Its not very funny in reality if it does happen... but you gotta have a little humor...

Anyone else have this extensive "Awareness" at their school?

There is start in raising the awareness in alot of things.
Like ,feeding it slowly to the public.
Be prepared,be ready kind of thing.
BTW:I sent you a u2u.

In 1991 I was in grade 2. Every week we were given "Weekly Reader" which is a publication that I'm sure many people of our age group were required to read in school.

In one particular weekly reader, there was a story about CERN and how they were going to build a particle accelerator in the future that may one day destroy the earth! This, in a weekly reader for second graders! In 1991! That always stuck with me.

I have made a rudimentary search to find the particular issue with no luck. If anyone could find it I would appreciate it.

Your school used foolish methods because they followed foolish peoples ideas.

Its good to hear you've made it through their terroristic exercises.

yes, when i lived in california in my early schooling years we had some pretty extensive EQ preparedness weeks too.

i remember everybody would always say that "the big one" would hit anytime in the next 20-30 years (depending on who you talk to but it was always in that range)

the 6.9 in 1989 was apparently on a different fault line(hayward) than "the big one" was supposed to happen on(san andreas).

well its been 22 years since that quake...

My elementary school had fallout shelter signs all over it. Remnants of the nuclear war that never came to be.

Just because you read something in school doesn't mean it is going to happen. I mean I was forced to watch The Inconvenient Truth propaganda in HS

hmmmmm, since i was already long out of school by 91, i'm guessing many of you don't remember this ...
loma prieta 1989
more photos, details

and, at that time earthquake "predicting" was at a very early stage.
it was common acceptance that the energy from the 89 rumble would have a greater impact on the NM zone. hence, much more focus was directed to 'educating' rather just basic drills.

curious question for you: if a large quake was 'predicted' (by the professional models, not a psychic) for your region, would you want to be made aware in advance or would you prefer to not know until the event occurs ?

The most likely reason for the awareness program in your school was as a result of a prediction by Iben Browning. It It caused a media swarm which created a mild panic in the area.

I remember that. I was a senior in high school then in Missouri. Uncle Tupelo wrote a song about it.
Great stuff!

I remember this...
I also remember "earthquake insurance" being a really big deal during this time...

There is a lake somewhere in Missouri (so many years ago, i forget specifics) that was heating up, and thats why they thought the fault line was going to give a big one...

This time was also my introduction to "survival packs" lol.....

I remember it being a certainty that we were about to get hit my the "big one"...
