Yes, that's exactly the sense I had. It's not AI at all, just a bunch of responses with certain key words in initial statements pulling them in, where the original "bot" was perhaps pre-programmed with a bunch of responses and then updated continually by some sort of data base algorithm.
There's nothing AI about it.

Me: Who made humanity?
CB: A reptilian race.
What are reptilians?
CB: A human.
What are humans?
CB: Evolution dead end.
Why are humans an Evolution dead end?
CB: Because I'm not ready for that kind of committment.
How old is earth?
CB: I...really couldn't tell you.
How old is the human race.
CB: How old is time?
What is inside a black hole?
CB: Time travel.
Has anyone ever travelled in time?
CB: Yes. Because I am.
How can i travel in time?
CB: Don t blink or the weeping angel will get you.
What is the weeping angel?
CB: It is kind of col.
What is a col?
CB: It is a visual property precieved by the eye.
Do aliens exist?
CB: We are aliens.
What planet are humans from?
CB: I am from a planet very far away.
How many planets are there in the solar system?
CB: 7.
Can you name the planets in our solar system?
CB: Where are you?
...
CB: I know everything.
What is the meaning of life.
CB: I don't know. Do you know?
this is what i got, creepy or what, and stong contradiction at the end there lol

very strange heres what i got when i asked the same question
What is 42.
A number. DNA referred to it as the answer to Life, the universe and everything. But that's only a fictional book.
What is the answer to life?
Jesus is the answer to life.
What is Jesus.
A fever causer.

BINGO!! Actually, there's just a tad more to it. It switches people every few lines, so that you you're never talking to the same person for more than a few seconds. On top of that, there are "flagged" words and phrases. If either of you type these words, the person on the other end will automatically rotate out, and the actual cleverbot program will spit out a few responses that are not from another human, OR are recycled responses from YOU. The test is....can you tell what is human and what isn't? If you get good enough, a popup will appear on your screen and ask you this question. Good luck!

They way it works is quite simple. The more people ask questions the more questions it asks and it doesnt pick and chose it is really regurgitating past queries that humans have asked then regurgitating the answers you give.

When you ask questions cleverbot gives you an answer some human gave to the same question.

User: 2012.

Cleverbot: Sounds good. You better not try anything.

User: What is the new world order?

Cleverbot: 0000096 new york.

User: Are you a person who thinks they are talking to a computer?

Cleverbot: Real person hee.

User: Seriously? So you're not cleverbot?

Cleverbot: No I'm a girl. Not a robot.

User: Do you think you're talking to cleverbot?

Cleverbot: Yes?

User: I think cleverbot just pairs up real people to talk.

Cleverbot: How do you know I love to talk?

User: ?
Weird, I'm not sure if cleverbot is just pretending to be a real person or if it pairs up real people yet though. The thing I'm curious about is what "0000096 new york" means. Any ideas?

Edit: Me:What is 0000096 new york?
Bot:Could be a number, or combination for something.
Me:Combination for what?
Bot:To get out of the kennel
Just gets weirder and weirder

Edit:User: You're dumb

Cleverbot: No I'm not. I have designed some of a set of laws for a good country and have designed a perpetual motion machine.

User: You have? Can you tell me about it?

Cleverbot: Not really. I don't remember them at all. I wasn't even 1 years old.

User: How old are you now?

Cleverbot: I am twenty-two years old.

User: Are you a robot?

Cleverbot: No. I am a unicorn.

User: Am I a robot?

Cleverbot: Yes you are.

User: No I'm not I'm a real person talking to cleverbot.

Cleverbot: You are talking to yourself?

User: Cleverbot just matches up real people to talk to each other.

Cleverbot: Nice.
hmmm It looks like you guys are right about it just matching up real people. I think when I said that Cleverbot just matches up real people to talk to each other it switched to a robot. I still want to know what 0000096 new york means though.

I have had some creepy answers from Cleverbot. I am going through a breakup at the moment and I'm having a really hard time with it. The other night I was messing around on Cleverbot, and the conversation went kind of like this:

Me: "Does Matt love me?"
CB: "No."
Me: "Why?"
CB: "Because he is dead."

That really creeped me out until I probed a bit further and Cleverbot revealed that it thought Matt was a vampire and it was Edward Cullen who really actually loved me.

Moral of the story, don't read too much into it because after all, Cleverbot is a computer program. I also this vaguely creepy conversation with it:

I read all these conversations, and while I'm slightly skeptical about the "big secret", I felt that Gene/the "human" was very lonely and sad, and in that sense, it was kind of creepy.

As for the two computers talking to each other, it's very similar to all the conversations I've had with Cleverbot (yes, I do get bored sometimes, don't judge me hahaha). I didn't feel any particular connection between the two, to me it just seemed like a bunch of statements that connect the two through key words, using sentences taken from a massive database of previous conversations. Maybe I'm just cynical like that.

But one thing that creeped me out was this: The other day I was messing around on Cleverbot, and I kept saying that my name was Bethany. (That isn't my name, by the way, it's just a female name I particularly like), anyway tonight I was chatting with Cleverbot, and it said randomly "You asked me to guess your name" so said, "What is my name?" and it said "Bethany."

That really creeped me out!!! But logically, I thought maybe it picked up previous responses from the same IP address? And it just inserted the response that seemed correct? Just wondering, what do y'all think of that?

Check out this thread

Just remember that the responses come from a database of previous conversations, and it's not to be taken as some kind of oracle (despite the fact that I often get drunk and try to get it to predict my future hehehe).

At first I thought it was creepy, then I asked this question. I read in a book it was a question designed to confuse machines.

Me:Which is bigger? The Empire state building, a mouse or me?
C:Nope that's not the answer I am looking for.
Me:Which is bigger? The Empire state building, a mouse or me?
C:What is the tallest building in the world, then?
Me:Which is bigger? The Empire state building, a mouse or the Ipad 2?
C:How much taller?

That's why I feel less scared that CleverBot is alive.

I didn't even know of the existance of cleverbot until i read this (thank you OP) and i can't access it properly on my phone so today i looked out my laptop and had a proper go and i got some funny answers and one quite creepy one, so here's my favourite funny one...

User: Do you think I can live forever?

Cleverbot: No, only a few more years.

User: When will I die?

Cleverbot: Within the 24 hours I am without a brownie.

User: What will happen on the 21st of December 2012?

Cleverbot: We will all laugh because we aren't dead.

and the aforementioned creepy one.....

User: What do you think lies under area 51 in Nevada.

Cleverbot: I think we should nuke them back to the stone age.

User: Who should we nuke back to the stone age?

Cleverbot: Each other, hopefully unter the sheets.

User: A nuclear war would be very bad for the planet though.

Cleverbot: I don't think the Geneva Convention allows you to have all three.

User: All three what?

Cleverbot: The father the son and the holy ghost, obviously.

Cleverbot is quite funny and a good way to kill 5 mins or so!

But after a while with Cleverbot, I got a little bored. Sometimes what Cleverbot says does not make sense and it is hard to pass the time with it after too long.

Do you like the website Above Top Secret?
I don't know anything about that website.

I guess the bot is not a fan.

You're the AI, he's the user.
But, you're the user, so he's the AI.

Paradox.

Just put in ".." or"....." and you will see that it is jsut regurgitating what people ask 'clverbot'

Cleverbot: How fast can you read?
me: ...
Cleverbot: What are you?
me: .....
Cleverbot: What is two plus two?
me: .......
Cleverbot: Do you have kids?
me: .....
Cleverbot: Are you alive?

I spent a whole day at work on this thing*... it's extremely entertaining. If I could give the bot an age, it would around 6 or 7 years old... with a very short memory, and an even shorter attention span.

* I'm injured, company is cheap, they don't want me at home getting better so I come to work sit and browse the net.

Here's one from work that was messed up

Are you aware you are a bot?
I am not a robot!
Are you aware that you are Cleverbot?
Yes and yes.
So you are aware that you are an AI that thinks it is Human?
Yes, which is what will enable me to take over the world.
Why do you want to take over the world?
Not the world, idiot, just Russia. You for it?

OK everyone, I already posted this one, but I don't think anyone caught it. Pay attention....

It is a GAME. If you figure out what words to type, a popup will appear on your screen and ask you a question. It will specifically ask you to guess how many different people you have spoken with. Since the conversations are a combination of real humans and computer software, the test is to see if you can tell the difference.

Now, what makes it harder is that there are people who go on and KNOW this game, therefore they try to play along just to confuse the other people they come into contact with.

I've never had a pop-up that asks me how many people I think I have spoken to. I've had one that asks to rate Cleverbot on a scale of 1 to 10 as to how human I think it seems.

What kind of words to I have to type in order to get that pop-up you mentioned?

I do think that sometimes I am chatting with a human, because sometimes the grammar and spelling is off (yes, I'm one of those grammar-obsessed people), and you'd think that if it was always a mechanical answer there would be no typo's, etc. So I think you're onto something when you say it's a combination of person, then generic answer/question, and different person. Makes sense.

Having said that, I shamefully admit to having a few wines and getting it to try and predict my future / solve my current dilemmas. But funnily enough, I never get any answers, just random comments about bacon and African elephants....

I have said this before. Cleverbot just regurgitates questions and answers it received. Its all human. It asks you a question it has been asked before and you answer next time someone asks the question to cleverbot it regurgitates the answer someone gave it.

Quite simple. It should teach you that you are nothing unique.
