A bell is hanging high up in a belfry in Africville, Nova Scotia, baffling community members who say it mysteriously appeared one night at the site of a church that's being rebuilt to commemorate the black community that once flourished there.

"It's no easy feat because there are no stairs inside, so how they actually got up there to attach the bell is a bit of a mystery," Daurene Lewis from the Africville Heritage Trust told CTV News.

Africville, a historically black community along the shores of Halifax Harbour, was deliberately destroyed in the 1960s when residents were relocated and homes levelled to make room for a bridge.

-X-files theme playing-

So, who or what the hell would put a bell up in a tower without any access to the place where the bell would go? How is this even possible without anyone noticing? In order to get up there you would have to be spider man or get some sort of lift to even get up that high.

Spooky stuff.

Those pesky middle of the night people.

I've read about them planting trees in sidewalks, erecting statues or modern art, painting peoples houses pink. All sorts of wacky things they get up to.

Paranormal....are you sure lol???

Once its taken down they will know where it came from,.....i could get that bell in there with no trouble....an hour max id say.

The church is in the middle of nowhere...theres not really much around it, so that makes it easier to do without being seen. If this had happened in central london i may have thought it weird that no one saw anyone with a cherry picker tying a bell to a church with climbing rope.

Oh another try to become famouse for 5 secons. It's the same as bleeding statues, UFO sightings or all those eastern european children with 'mystical' powers that suddenly vanish once some wants to check them up. A sad attempt for attention.
It's not really difficult to attach a Bell to a Bell tower, if it would freely float around, that would be something. But what is needed? A ladder and two people bringing the bell up? Could be done in the middle of the night without problems.

Obviously they did it 'with bells on'

Climbers from a local club donated the bell and climbed up and even left it tied in place with some climbing rope !!!!

Canada has some nice folks !!!

Nothing too paranormal about that

Maybe you missed this part

So please, tell us how you could do this in one hour. We'll be waiting.

The article does say the bell is hung on what looks like climbing rope, so you're thinking a local climbers club donated a bell and hung it up in secret? Mmkay.

Ladder?

I wouldn't advise hauling a bell up a ladder, but that's just me. Could it have been hauled up a ladder? No, not unless that ladder can fit more than one person. Just think how heavy that bell is. Now who ever hung that bell could have climbed a ladder to fasten the bell but they did not haul a bell up a ladder. My guess would be some sort of pulley system was involved that hauled the bell upwards.

Great find.

^^You could get it up there in an hr max, without it making a sound????I guess this is where you would create some elaborate idea for us not to hear you right?!!?! That would've been included in your post.

The community doesn't know how it got there which means they did not hear anything.

Anyway, Great find and it is a sad story behind the mysticism. I would love to see a shot of the whole church. I am just curious, how tall is that particular section of the building?.?>

I guess we would need to see how heavy the bell is. For all we know maybe its not that heavy as it looks. But I agree that they probably used some pulley system.

Possible scenario:

1 Pass rope over beam.
2 Pull up chain over beam & attach somewhere nearby @ ground level.
3 Attach chain winch (powered) to chain.
4 Attach fitter/rigger, tools, fittings and bell to the chain winch.
5 Winch them all up the chain to the top.
6 Install fittings to beams.
7 Attach bell to fittings.
8 Drop chain winch down a few inches to allow bell to hang from fittings and loosen the connection to the winch.
9 Detach bell from winch.
10 Ensure fittings are holding the bell correctly.
11 Descend the chain winch to the ground.
12 Pack up tools & winch. Undo & retrieve chain. Go home.

Total job, likely less than 5 minutes & not that noisy.

(I used to be a roadie for live music & have used similar to help rig lights).

Swills Whats wrong with you ????

Yes Climbers from the Alpine Club actually climbed up and threw ropes over and pulled a bell up... there was a few of them !!! Its Possible ??? No !! lol

We donated the bell through saving funds and purchasing a bell through another church which was demolished .....

Is this starting to make any sense to you Swills ????

Nothing strange but the way you are so damn paranoid ???

My friend's cousin attends there and is a member on the vollunteer board who is actually building this church.

I believe that (for some of the pyramids) the rock was poured in place and set like concrete. Far easier to cart buckets of slush than to cart massive boulders. We've just lost the recipe that makes such effective and strong "stone".

It was done by Climbers who used the ropes as a pulley and once up it was tied off with a static line for climbing so it would be safe now it has been bolted up and the original nylon ropes were cut.

Right? I wonder if there is a list I can get on. Get them to come to my house and night and do the cleaning and laundry. I've tried leaving little treats but the only ones who come to eat them are the bugs.
