A SAUDI woman has been sentenced to 10 lashes for defying a ban on women driving in the conservative kingdom, an activist says, while another woman has been arrested in the capital.

Yes you can have the vote. No you can't drive.

Recently Saudi women won the right to vote, however it seems as though driving a car is still off the agenda. Yes driving a car will get you the lash. The pinnacle of modernity indeed.

I have stated previously that I lived there for sometime, during the first gulf war if your interested. Anyway my "Boss" at the time, a Saudi who was educated in the USA, got into some very serious trouble with the authorities there when his wife was involved in a demonstration about driving.

About 50 women drove through Riyadh and let me tell you TSHTF bigtime. The punishment, Passports confiscated and 24 hour surveillance by the secret police. All for driving a car.

Time the men evolved. A woman is no less than a man. Why are they so afraid of women that they need to keep them down? Un friggin believable! I'd never allow a man to treat me the way these women do. I don't care if it's their culture and they were raised this way. Grow up and move on!

Their country, their rules. I don't agree with it at all, I find it backwards and idiotic. However, it's not my place to force them to give women the right to drive. (I'd like to see a man in the family fall deathly ill with only his wife or daughter to drive... Wonder what he'd choose then...)

But my point is, as I've said before: It's not our country. If they want change, they have to make that change themselves. (Just like the rest of us have to and have done.)

when someone hurts another they are no more than hurting themselves by attacking that which they see in them that reminds them of their own failure. people need to realize that if their neighbor is a slave then they are also a slave. if your neighbor is poor then you are also poor, no one is rich till everyone is rich.

Qur'an (2:228) - "and the men are a degree above them [women]"

Qur'an (5:6) - "And if ye are unclean, purify yourselves. And if ye are sick or on a journey, or one of you cometh from the closet, or ye have had contact with women, and ye find not water, then go to clean, high ground and rub your faces and your hands with some of it" Men are to rub dirt on their hands if there is no water to purify them following casual contact with a woman (such as shaking hands).

Qur'an (24:31) - Women are to lower their gaze around men, so they do not look them in the eye. (To be fair, men are told to do the same thing in the prior verse).

Qur'an (2:223) - "Your wives are as a tilth unto you; so approach your tilth when or how ye will..." A man has dominion over his wives' bodies as he does his land. This verse is overtly sexual. There is some dispute as to whether it is referring to the practice of anal intercourse, which it has been used historically to justify. If this is what Muhammad meant, however, then it would appear to contradict what he said in Muslim (8:3365).

Qur'an (4:3) - (Wife-to-husband ratio) "Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four" Inequality by numbers.

Qur'an (53:27) - "Those who believe not in the Hereafter, name the angels with female names." Angels are sublime beings, and would therefore be male.

Qur'an (4:24) and Qur'an (33:50) - A man is permitted to take women as sex slaves outside of marriage. Note that the verse distinguishes wives from captives (those whom they right hand possesses).

What is funny is that the leaders of this and other similar countries expect us (the US) to take them seriously when it comes to global politics, meanwhile actively oppressing their own citizens.

Its like the wild west out there man. Just because they have modern toys in modern times does not mean they have modern laws. Imagine if America fell under Leviticus. Same type of concept.

OK, we give up and allow the men to drive cars and allow us what was never denied our grandmothers - camels. Let every household own as many camels as they wish or can afford. Open up schools to teach women how to ride and house and maintain a camel.

OK it's a bit tongue in cheek, but the prophet Muhammed's family got around on camels, including the women, so that must be ok, right? Or does riding a camel instead of driving a car reduce the punishment to 2 spankings?

Saudi Arabia to lift ban on women drivers

Saudi Arabia is to lift its ban on women drivers in an attempt to stem a rising suffragette-style movement in the deeply conservative state.

Government officials have confirmed the landmark decision and plan to issue a decree by the end of the year.

The move is designed to forestall campaigns for greater freedom by women, which have recently included protesters driving cars through the Islamic state in defiance of a threat of detention and loss of livelihoods.

The royal family has previously balked at granting women driving permits, claiming the step did not have full public support. The driving ban dates back to the establishment of the state in 1932, although recently the government line has weakened.

I'd be ok with giving this woman 10 lashes for not using a turn signal to cut across 8 lanes of traffic, regardless of whether she's Saudi or any other background...I've seen it happen and it's dangerous:




Of course if they suddenly let the Saudi women drive, there are bound to be a few more accidents at first while they are still learning. But with oil at sky high prices, the Saudi's should be able to afford the insurance.
