Israel: Pressure grows for defense cuts

As Israel's military prepares to counter an expected surge of violence over the Palestinians' bid for statehood, growing tension with peace partner Egypt and another war with Hezbollah, pressure grows for slashing the defense budget to boost social spending.

Of course the warmongers LOVE to scaremonger.

The Jerusalem Post quoted an unidentified "senior source on the General Staff" as warning that the military "will collapse in five years, and possibly earlier," if the 2012 defense budget is cut.

"It will be a different military since we will not be able to provide missile defense systems, to buy more fighter jets, to buy more tanks and ammunition if the budget is cut."

Except Israel doesn't need more tanks, nor more jets, nor more ammunition, nor more missile defense systems. Israel has enough military hardware to wipe every middle-eastern country off the map if they wanted and they have the US military backing. So please.

There were reports that a committee headed by Professor Manuel Trajtenberg appointed by the government to find ways to implement socio-economic change, had recommended lopping $809.9 million off the defense budget.

If that's the case, the 2012 defense budget would be cut to around $6.5 billion, out of the $13.62 billion that usually goes to the military, including little-known supplementary allocations.

$6.5 billion in military spending in 2012... compared to $16 billion in 2011.

The Defense Ministry budget for 2011 stands at some NIS 56 billion ($16 billion)

$6.5 billion out of $16 billion is 40%... so the IDF is cutting their budget by 60% or so. Pretty ballsy.

Hopefully we see this kind of cuts in the US military soon.

Edit : The problem with a less powerful military, when you got NUKES, is that if you got a weak conventional military and it gets defeated... you use nukes. But if you've got a strong conventional military, then it's not defeated and you don't have to use nukes.

So it's kind of a lose-lose scenario.

i'm guessing this means operation 'takeout iran' will be happening this year then.

Something gives me the feeling that for every dollar Israel cuts US taxpayers will be forced to make up the difference probably two or three times more.

Could be. The defense department in Israel have a double set of books.

"In effect, there are two sets of books," said the Globes business daily. "It is impossible to monitor and control the budget activity of the Ministry of Defense and the armed forces… This practice occurs at no other ministry."

So they could say they are cutting defense budgets when in fact, it stays high, but the money comes from somewhere else (drug trade, foreign countries, black ops)... just like the CIA black budget.

So "Defense Spending" will turn into "Social Spending".... hmm, that could also include Police spending.
So you could see Israeli Police with uber-equipment (helicopters, SWAT teams, etc)

But that's just my cynical side talking, what do I know? LOL

Thanks for the article OP... I don't think it's truthful though because they are going to be at War soon and I don't think any country in history has lowered a War Budget in a time of War.. I could be wrong though, who knows..

On a side note: You stated Israel has enough weapons to destroy all neighboring country's and that's simply not true. They have enough to crush 1 or maybe 2 country's military at the same time if Nukes are used. But they can't just start Nuking things or they lose everything regardless. Also they have between 200 and 1000 nukes if you do the math on blast radius and radiation sickness they couldn't even completely destroy Iran even if they launched 1000 nukes in the first Volley (Which is Impossible/Impractical) They could do some serious Damage to 1 or 2 country's but the only people they could actually wipe out is themselves if they start playing with Nuclear Fire.

I see no problem for Isreal's defense, the Americans will easily make up for the cut's. Give them some more free tank's or planes. Besides if Isreal was ever really threatened the US would be there so fast it would make your head spin.

I have no idea where your source got those numbers, but they are completely off !
The budget cut is suggested to be around 3 billion Shekels out of an annual budget of 55 billion Shekels.
Nowhere near 60% sensational headline.

Israel will NOT cut 60% of it's military budget in 2012, 2015 or even 2020!

I wonder how many US taxpayer dollars it has taken to kill each Palestinian the Israeli military has killed in the last 10 years.

In other words if you take the total Israeli military budget and divide it by the several thousand Palestinians killed what would the cost per kill be?

The Christian Science Monitor some five or six years ago said the US had given the US over one trillion dollars as of the year 2000 if I remember correctly.

A lot of that went to the Israeli military but some of it has gone to building illegal settlements on Palestinian land.

Lets find out how many Iraqis, Afghanis and Libyans it cost to kill funded by the American tax payer. Just in Iraq and Afghanistan alone the number of Iraqi & Afghani deaths are beyond 2 million. Actual count of Libyans still unknown. THEN lets also add the number of military that came home in body bags.....and then we could also count the number of Iraqi and American children born with serious birth defects since the first Gulf War to today......

The number of deaths of Palestinian Arabs by the IDF since 1948 compared the the deaths of Iraqis and Afghanis by American military in the past 10 years does'nt even come remotely close. Of course, none of us are counting how many Palestinians have been killed by Hamas or Fatah, and no one bothered to check how many Palestinian Arabs were slaughtered by King Hussein of Jordan when he was alive. All in all, Arabs who kill Arabs and Americans who kill Arabs is ok but when Israel kill Arabs thats a whole different ball game, right?

I would love to hear about where you are from! Also, I feel that your math may be a little off... it happens. If you have a good computer they usually come with a program ( called calculator ) that I have found helps a lot when trying to figure out those pesky numbers. Just be careful of facts and statistics when starting a thread, those things can make you look silly if you ignore them! When we talk about the amount of money that is spent to advance Israeli military cuases we should add in the amount of money the US spends to fight wars on behalf of Israel.

We might say that half or more of the US military budget is dedicated to "defending" Israel. Have to add that whatever the Israel budget is it is not spent on defending Israel. It is spent on making war with others and holding the land they have stolen from their neighbors.

AIPAC (America Israel Public Affairs Committee) was very happy to brag to everyone that they convinces the Bush Administration to attack and invade Iraq in the early days of the war when success looked certain.

However, being the scumbag bastards that they are, AIPAC backed off that claim when more Christian Americans we being blown up and things did not look like the clear victory it did at first.

I say Christian soldiers because so few Jews enlist in the US military. American Jews have better things to do like scam the financial market and run the pron industry. So why not let the White, Black and Latino kids die in wars their Jewish fathers start.

Speaking of Israeli military spending, I read somewhere that more American Jews were serving in the Israeli military during the height of the occupation of Iraq than were in enlisted in the US army.

Any of you supporters of the criminal state of Israel know if that is true?

Excuse me? The Americans did'nt go in to Iraq and Afghanistan on behalf of Israel; that decision was already made long before Saddam ever became President. In fact, if I recall, the plan was already drawn up in the 1960s!!!

Tell me, whats the budget the Americans spend on aiding Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the Palestinians? Come on thou most intelligent one....answer me!

So few Jews enlist in the US Military? How many are in the US Military again? Oh, and while you're at it smart guy, how many American Jews volunteered for IDF service during both Gulf Wars?
