If aliens are coming here, they are likely coming here for the breathable atmosphere in which to occupy, or they are here for what we see as life. The rarest thing in our spacial awareness appears to be what we see as life.

I would assume Aliens are here because of Life.

Well, according to the show you mention, they obviously came here (and, presumably, elswhere) to ensure that everybody in the galaxy knows how to stack rocks up into various shapes.

No I meant I didn't think it was real. I realized that they wpuldn't need to come here.

SW,

Didn't mean to imply anything at all about your particular beliefs on this one way or the other, just to point out the pure idiocy of that television show.

Most of the reasons have already been stated, but here are mine.

1: Protein(that's us).
2: To check up on their experimental planet.
3: Just as explorers to a new environment.
4 :A fuel stop.
5:To exchange knowledge/ideas.
6: Because their planet is dying(terraform/invasion scenario).
7:Engine problems,emergency landing.
8:To breed with us,reasons unknown.
9:They need genetic material for research.
10:Aliens have detected cheese on our planet, and they want it.

I hope its 4 5 7 or 10 myself.
They will have their reasons folks.

And so, via Sherlock's system of reduction, you have put your finger on the solution (no pun intended) ! As humans, we are obviously very unique in the Universe, as rare as truffles, perhaps. Therefore, they come for us as soup ingredients. Try to imagine yourself as a delicious delicacy. (But don't be consumed by the thought, if you know what I mean.)

If they for some reason, needed water they could head to Neptune's moon Triton! Probably easier for them to get to, and they wouldn't have to destroy another pesky race. Or they could make it in a laboratory! (Not sure if you can but by combining hydrogen and oxygen I believe you could but you would need very large amounts)
Or they could use this! www.wired.com...

I can speculate and come up with many possible scenarios such as...

- We are something akin to a 'high school science project' for an ultra-advanced race. The experiment ends next year...

- This is not the physical. 3D reality we think it is. We are actually participating in an ultra-advanced sort of 'video game' where our 'real' memories are completely wiped when we begin and when we 'die' we wake up back in our real bodies.

- We are something akin to a 'larval form' of life like tadpoles in a pond. Life here on Earth is a filtering process where the undesirables are weeded out and the ones who 'pass' go on to the next stage of existence after this life.

If you have imagination and intelligence you can come up with many, many more possibilities...

I tend to agree with J. B. S. Haldane who said "My own suspicion is that the Universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose."

Why would aliens come here?

Well... If they are anything like us they would sail across the solar system just to see what was on the other side... And if they found life when they got there... They would shove a probe up it's arse to what makes it tick...

Actually, DNA creates reality through observation and interaction. So an alien might be interested in anyplace that manages to either come up with or provide a relatively nurturing environment for DNA.

Without each other, we don't exist. That might be a pretty good reason to show an interest.

Why else, to witness other sentient beings, to know they aren't alone in the Universe. Why do some scientists spend their lives becoming an expert on one particular thing? Simple, it intrigues them, and they want to know more.

Never underestimate the power of curiosity.

I think for some they are our relatives and it is sort of like a family re-union. For others they may be curious or predatory, who knows? I think they are coming here for certain though and we have relatives, Atlante-ans and Lemurians on other planets who sort of hang around.

They would come here to eat us, which is exactly what is going to happen in the upcoming harvest event. That's why I haven't quit smoking, it ruins the meat!

There are no aliens, do not worry, they are not a threat, what is a threat are the people propping up the idea.

Not just to do their doctoral theses in exoanthropology but also for the music, literature, sports, and various types of art, even TV and movies, and maybe to browse ATS. Or maybe they've got a thing for hyuu-maan females.

There is only one real reason aliens would want to come and visit Earth.

To have a bloody good laugh.

A nice fantasy, but it doesn't work like that.

I kind of liked that South Park episode, where the entire planet Earth is actually the Universe's longest running, and most successful reality show.
