My favorite theory for SHC is that this is evidence of a long standing time war. Beings from the future (people? Greys?) are selectively assassinating people in the past, using advanced weapons (such as functional lasers or handheld super-colliders) in order to alter the future (and not necessarily for chrono-genetic reasons either). They must wait until the person is alone in order to limit other temporal probabilistic effects in the local space-time. Since they simply lase down the individual not much else around is affected (which is also deliberate). Time travel would likely use an immense amount of energy (utilizing perhaps the use of exotic matter) so the temporal window would be kept to a minimum and the means used would have to be brutal, efficient, and brief. What mysterious alterations in our timeline are made remains a matter for conjecture, as we would have to literally trace the cause back to the future. They could be preventing future Hitlers or Stalins, or creating them. Also, as to why these beings would choose people who are perhaps in some cases not considered "important" societally, consider also the economy of reality manipulation: take out a prime minister or celebrity you are creating a huge number of consequences - a literal tidal wave of change in the future, where the results of past causality is magnified. So you want to just snip of a bit here and a bit there, corralling in your end result in a manageable way.

I thought the time war was time locked.

Dalek Caan flew in and rescued Davros from the jaws of the Nightmare Child, remember?

This such an eco-friendly way to go.

Normal cremation takes lots of energy and gives off gases. Embalming and then putting it in the ground pollutes also.

Maybe he was just a really committed greenie.

No, not after getting incinerated by a crack in the universe, never existing and then being rebooted. Yeah, after that, a few things are hazy at best.
