www.smh.com.au...

Yes, my city- Melbourne, AUS is once again rated the most liveable city in the world! I'm a few weeks late I know but thought it is well worthy of noting/trumpet sounding!

Any other Aussies in here will see the humor of me, as a Melbournian using Sydney's bigges newspaper as my source article

I absolutely love this city though, I would of thought there are other 'more liveable' cities in the world- all comes down to how much money you have I guess (which in my case, isn't heaps!) plus I'm not 100% on all of the judging criteria.

Anyway, thought it was well worth a mention- please share your Melbourne experiences!

On behalf of the rest of the world let me be the first one to congratulate Melbourne for being the "the most livable city" whatever that means!
Personally i hated Melbourne when i was there in late 80s early 90s, way too many Victorians!

Have say I agree with that sentiment. I lived there for 15 years and eventually escaped to the sunshine and warmth of Queensland

Ahh it's changed a lot since then, some for better and some for worse.

The problem with everywhere else in Australia is that there is wayyyyy too many; New South Welshman, Banana Farmers (Queenslanders, who funnily enough call us Victorians 'Mexicans' for being south of the border...hahaha *SARCASM* have fun being sceppo's!) and South Australians.

Bless mighty Victoria- the heart and soul of Australia

Wow, hehe in 1986 it was a miserable place! Nonstop rain and the most unfriendly people.

Must be one of those time shifts Aus. experiences occasionally. Lol

Besides I've seen underbelly.. youre all violent gangsters

In fairness, I'm not sure what it's judged off as we have the most public housing in Australia, our fair share of murders/violent crime, a rampant drug problem and all the usual things you'd find in most cities.

*puts "the ants go marching one by one" music on*

Annnd the last bar-

MELBOURNE BOYS ARE STILL NUMBER ONE!

Stayed in St Kildas for 6 months and loved the area in 2000. It was hard to leave. For a woman traveling alone, I had no problems and met many locals who were friendly & welcoming. Besides the city areas with the great gardens, restaurants (the Peking Duck, the Italian restaurants run by the Albanians, the meat pies) & museums, there are so many things in the nearby burbs. I also lived in Sydney & Adelaide and both had a lot of wonderful qualities too. Although I did get robbed in Sydney on day one, the next month was fantastic. Loved climbing the bridge, the parks, Kings Street, winning at the Casino and proximity to the Blues. The friendliness of the people in Adelaide more than made up for the difficulty in finding nighttime fun (it was there, just not as easy to find for visitors). Coober Pedy was my favorite for it's craziness, but I only spent a few weeks there. I've been lucky to travel to many countries, and Australia was such a pearl. It's not heaven, but it's close.

As a Melbournian......I would have thought just like the OP that there would be more liveable cities in the world.

If Melbourne is really on top of the list, it scares me to think how bad the rest of the worlds cities must be considering the negative aspects that Melbourne has.

Then again everyone has their own interpretation of it. In the outer suburbs its not bad, I'd had to live anywhere in the inner suburbs or city areas but thats just me.

Melbourne is one of the largest cities in the world going by actual physical size.

To be honest I cant wait to get out of here and head for the country side/hills as the ratRace and the fast paced of life is driving me up the bloody wall!

I'm not one for hustle and bustle-> being tucked away in a little side street in South Melbourne is perfect! Stones throw from the CBD and I don't even hear any traffic! Not only that, it is a very short stroll down to the beach plus I walk to work in Port Melbourne.

Though I was born here in Melbourne and am residing here again I grew up in country Victoria and miss the serenity of a national MARINE park w/ camping grounds and a star filled sky.

Agree, agree, agree! The only plausible reason for supporting interstate teams is if A) you were a Fitzroy supporter or B) originally a South Melbourne supporter......I still don't think I'd be able to bring myself to support ANY team from shi*ney though. CARN THE HAWKERS!
