Well that just about says it all, doesn't it?

SAT reading scores hit record low for Class of 2011

The Class of 2011 logged the lowest SAT reading scores ever, while the combined reading and math scores hit their lowest point in 16 years, the College Board said today. Just over 40% of the high school seniors met benchmarks for college success.

The mean reading score on the 800-point test was 497, a three-point drop over 2010 and one of the biggest annual declines in two decades. In 2005, the mean reading score -- half scoring above and half below -- was 508.

Based on the above graph, whcih represents inflation adjusted public school spending vs test scores since 1970, the obvious solution to this issue is more money.

If ever an argument that spending has no relationship to results.... What a freakin' disaster...

The first thing to do is accept that federal intervention in the school system has been disastrous. Disband the dept of education. Return control of the school systems to the local level where they belong. What ever we were doing in 1973, let's go back and do that again. You know, READING, WRITING and ARITHMETIC! Get the social indoctrination classes out of the schools.

People need to remember this the next time they raise your property taxes to buy votes from the Teachers Unions. It's going to get worse because the Teachers who are retiring now will get more after they retire than they did working based on life expectancy. The Students they failed to Teach will have to pay for them to enjoy their beach house in Florida.

The SAT scores went down 12% between 1945 and 1963, due to atmospheric nuclear testing.

We are being saturated with radiation, from accidents all over, including recent ones covered up somewhat in North America on the waterways and in Europe, Spain/France.

They want LOGAN's RUN, low life expectancy and stupidity. They don't want bright serfs/slaves or for them to outlive their usefulness.

The Department of Education is run by a bunch of people who need to go back to school themselves, and get an education. Common sense and critical thinking is absent from those in charge.

Students also need to have the will to learn , most I see are more interested in their Iphone and social networking sites . Those who DO wish to better themselves wil never fail. Easy to blame the system , but it's a two way street imho.

just sayin'

I live in California. We also have test scores that are declining. However, we also have schools that consistently produced students with high test scores.

What's the difference?

First, inner city schools tend to have very low scores. You have to make you're own decisions as to why.
Second, schools that have a large immigrant population also do poorly. Once again you can decide why.

I chose the town that I live in partially because of the quality of the schools. My kids turned out great.

If you look at the next town over, you're lucky if your kid goes on to any form of higher education.

So, not all schools are failing. Some schools are still outstanding. If you're going to be a parent, make sure your kids are in the outstanding school districts not the ones that suck.

I noticed that they claim the results could be skewed due to bilingual upbringing...it reminds me of a joke by George Carlin.
www.amazon.com...

As Asian immigrants become more completely assimilated into American society over the next few generations, their standards of hard work and academic excellence will drop, and they will feel more at home here.

When the youths of today think that the English language actually consists of things like lol, brb, lmao, etc etc and the teachers actually accept that in homework, what more could be expected.

Also, when everything has to be a video in order to educate instead of actual reading material, what more could be expected.

Then we have the kids that do not want to be in school and do nothing to contribute except by creating distractions for the other students, does not help. This kinder gentler society sucks ass, I remember when the troublemakers at school were given warnings and after that they kicked their ass out and they could go get a GED when they finally decided to get with program.

You're grasping at straws here. It IS the Teachers job to Teach and to create a good learning environment. They are well paid to do so. Making excuses for them has to end at some point. When you have the problem of Tenure we can expect nothing but mediocrity.

We need the best teaching and instead our system installs the worst to teach and then rigs it so they cannot be fired, no matter how bad they are at their jobs. All done to buy their votes through their Unions. Nobody is being fooled. Some are just less honest with themselves than others.

When you mix politics with education, this is what we get. None of them give a damn about our children or their futures. They care only about themselves and what is in it for them. They follow the path of least resistance.

It's also said that you can lead a horse to water

Any child that does not wish to learn is not worth the effort imo .. too lazy to read a book , disruptive in class, lack of manners, more interested in sport or social interaction .. no problem .. learn to accept the consequences of your own laziness and inaction

As I said .. a two way street.

Students have to be ready to learn before they can benefit from school.

Perhaps it's time to have some sort of testing so that students that cannot pass the test cannot continue on in college prep classes and should instead be offered classes in trades.

I think that by the 8th grade or 10th grade at the latest, we should have mandatory testing. Those that can't pass go to trade school so at least they can get a job.

SAT scores correlate fairly well with IQ up to a certain point (something like 1300 i think?). My SAT was 1000. That means my IQ is average (about 99-100). In any case, the verbal section is especially linked to IQ - as I've heard. I'm not sure what to think about this, but I think the increased amounts of poverty (due to the economy) and the fact that IQ increases are limited, might offer an explanation. Yes, family income also correlates very well with SAT score so it mustn't be left out. Most professionals have IQs in the neighborhood of 120, btw. That's about 1200+ SAT score. And it does appear that asians are smarter than us, but do we really want a communist school system in the US? Doesn't that assume IQ difference is not genetic? So what happens if we implemented a communist school system in the US but later find out that the IQ difference -is- in fact genetic and not related to teaching methods? A lot of money wasted.

I know tha'ts a block of text, but my IQ is average. I have an excuse. Do yoU?

With all do respect the increase in school funding as been to make schools more "girl friendly" over the last 20 years. See how the AAUW caused a very real boy crisis by lieing about the "girl crisis" in the early 90's.

Best to do away with education all together.

It's a complete waste of money.

All you have at the end of the day is either an over educated idiot or an under educated idiot.
