Hey ATS family, hope your having a good week so far! Not sure what to say or how to get this started, so I'll give it my best shot and just go.

Ok, so this "thing" has happened to me a few times, (4 actually), and I am now very curious and interested in what this could be. Even if it's just a simple neurological phenomenon, or if it's part of something else....something much bigger.

Allow me to set the stage just a bit.
Every time this has happened, I have been laying down to take a nap. It seemingly happens right as I cross the threshold between being awake and going to sleep. (Have you ever almost been asleep, then your leg "jumps" or "twitches" for no apparent reason? That's precisely the level of consciousness I am at when these "events" happen.)

I am a typical, "normal" guy. I work a full time job, I have a wife and son, we live a "normal" life, and we enjoy our time together. I do not use hard drugs or drink alcohol. I occasionally smoke a wacky tobacco cigarette, maybe a few times a year, and I smoke half to a full pack of cigarettes a day.

I keep an open mind, and enjoy no, LOVE, reading/researching topics that are outside of the "norm", or may be considered taboo. ATS is a site I visit multiple times daily. I am an Aries, and a life path number 7 -numerology. So there is the stage, and a rough draft painting of myself, so here we go.

One day, I was almost asleep, when something unexplainable happened. I felt what seemed like a very powerful force enter my body and cause me to raise my head and sort of stick my chest out. Kind of like I had to flex my upper body muscles all at once.
This force was accompanied with other senses/feelings as well.
My tongue felt like it was shocked, like when you test a 9-volt battery on it...just a quick jolt, nothing too strong. My mouth watered directly after the shock.
At the same time, I heard a sound that I can only describe like this: It sounded like a electric instrument cord that is grounding out. (One end of the cord plugged into a power source, and the other end touched to your index finger.) I heard another sound at the same time as the grounding out instrument cable. It sounded like a cap gun going off very close to my ear, but the sound lasted about 2 seconds. (Like the cap gun sound being "stretched.")
Lastly, I saw a bright white flash that was so bright it made me just want to wince my eyes.
So let me re-cap...All of these things happen simultaneously, the entire "event" lasts maybe a full second to maybe 2 seconds.

•Force that makes me lift my head and flex upper body muscles.
•Shocking sensation on my tongue. accompanied with watering of the mouth.
•Sound of electrical cord grounding, with a loud "popping" sound.
•Bright flash of blinding white light.

Everytime this has happened, I have decided to get up out of bed and not try to nap. As I said before, I enjoy topics that are outside the box persay. I have always had the intuition or gut feeling that these "events" were actually an attempt from another entity to channel through me. I have never communicated with other "spirits" or "entities" before, and I have never known anyone who has. Maybe it is an attempt to receive a telepathic message? Maybe it is just a strange anomoly of life? Maybe a lot of people have experienced this, and there is a good explanation as to what it is.

What I do know, is that it's consistent everytime, and it has happened 4 times now. I havn't kept track of the exact dates, but if I were to guess, I'd say the "events" are about 6 months apart.
I have found NO common factors when reflecting on these situations. I have NO idea if there is some form of trigger I am missing, or what?!

I am putting this out here to see if any of you have had similar occurences, or if you have heard of anything like this before.

Please, if you have any questions or if I can clarify any part of my story, just ask. I am looking forward to your responses and figuring this thing out.

Happy hump day everybody!

The same thing happens to me a LOT. The "electrical buzz" is actually quite annoying, and there are times when it happens that I become somewhat paralyzed for a second or two. It usually scares me when it happens, because there is no rational explanation for it. One thing I have learned in order to avoid it, is have a beer before I go to bed. I know, self medicating and all that... but would rather drink a beer than put chemicals into my body.

I don't know. Maybe, it could be some type of seizure. Not all seizures involve gnashing of teeth and violent shaking. They occur along a spectrum. For me, this read like a potential seizure. MIght want to have an EEG ?
Just my thoughts. Sounds very frightening.

It sounds like a seizure.

Epilepsy maybe?

First thought is seizure..........there are so many types of seizures some are so brief you don't even know you're having them

Second thought if you take any type of meds that are for depression like cymbalta that alter your serotinin levels then it may be a result of withdrawal. Stay with me here. Some of these meds leave the body within 24 hrs or less so that is why it's important to take them at the same time every day. When you don't you can experience what is called brain shivers. Google it and check it out if you do take some type of SSRI meds.

I take a low dose of cymbalta for fibromyalgia pain and something similar happened to me yesterday when I layed down for a nap and forgot my meds at 10am. By 1pm during my nap I had some brain shivers.

I don't know about the OP... but it is scary. I have had EEG's done, there is no explanation for it. Personally, I think it is my mind telling me something, because usually after it happens, for me at least, something out of the ordinary happens the next day. I have had this happen for most of my life, and it still scares me when it happens, even though I tell myself to relax and find what it is telling me.

I can't imagine it was as dramatic as you've portrayed it if your only reaction thus far has been "guess I won't have a nap" and then eventually starting a thread about it. Anyone sane enough to tie their own shoes would be heading for a doctor as fast as possible after the first time, not sauntering vaguely internet-wards after several episodes.

Jumping and twitching of leg muscles is common especially if you are over tired or not getting enough sleep.

Sounds like to me you drift off, probably snoring (most smokers do especially if they lay on their backs) and suddenly awaken in a semi conscience state. No, sorry, no entity or spirits entering your body. You just need to get a good 7-8 hours straight sleep each night and less naps on the sofa before insomnia sets in or you won't be able to sleep when you should.

Thanks for sharing your star sign, life number, hobbies and habits, but really, what does that have to do with the rest of the post?

Sleep Starts
Most people have experienced the common "motor" sleep start — a sudden, often violent, jerk of the entire body that occurs upon falling asleep. Other forms of sleep starts also occur just as sleep begins. A "visual" sleep start is a sensation of blinding light coming from inside the eyes or head. An "auditory" sleep start is a loud snapping noise that seems to come from inside the head. Such occurrences can be frightening, but are harmless.

I just looked it up. I know mine isn't seizures and it is very real.... this may explain a little bit. I never have heard of this before, so thanks for posting!

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

It could be almost anything. It sounds neurological/neuromuscular to me (bear in mind, I'm far from a trained professional) and could be anything from Lhermitte's (Barber Chair phenomenon) to something acutely worse.

Could have something to do with the way you align yourself before falling asleep, and pressure points through the spine and neck. There's certainly no way for anyone here to tell you, and no way to know without a medical diagnosis. It sounds goofy enough to me to warrant consulting a doctor. Sometimes things start off sporadically, and get progressively worse over time, if not treated.

Call a doctor and make an appointment.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

I don't have insurance, can't afford a neurologist. And it doesn't happen everytime I take a nap, you may have misunderstood me. WHEN it happens, I go ahead and get up and not take a nap. I don't let these "things" stop me from trying ti take a nap though. I reached out to this community, in an attempt to get answers a doctor would never give me. Answers OUTSIDE the box. Thanks

Just trying to paint a picture of myself for the readers. And put it out there before someone started claiming it was a hallucinogenic experience. Just painting a picture buddy, thats all.

It's not fun, and you have my complete understanding and sympathy. There are ways that I do deal with it, but sometimes when it reoccurs every 10 seconds or so, I think I'm going insane!

I already know what it's like because it happens to me frequently too and it's NOTHING to worry about. Just go to bed earlier, get 8 hours straight sleep each night.....and try sleeping on your right side.

If you feel you have to have a doze....get up, splash cold water on your face and go out and mow the lawns or do something physical to keep you awake until bedtime.

Good grief, stop looking in to something thats not there or does'nt exist.

If you are at all worried about it, print out your original thread post and hand it to your GP; believe me, there's nothing they have'nt heard of already

Sorry, but I've never heard of anyone post their star sign, life number, hobbies and habits before to try and get the point across they might be "normal". If your GP read your original post, he might differ what he thinks is "normal" and send you to a very special work collegue if you know what I mean.

Please make a consultation with a neurologist ASAP. I'm no physician, but I'd suspect epilepsy. It can be very well treated most of the time, but if left alone it can grow and be dangerous, even fatal.

Epilepsy is just an abnormal global synchronization of your neurons; an effect of physics.

This is what always happens to me right before an out-of-body-experience. Also happens when I return from it, except the return is downright loud.

If you're doing this without trying, you may find you're a natural at what others struggle to accomplish. Scared the hair right off my head the first time I became aware of it happening because it was so disorienting and loud.

Don't discount others' advice on the neurological route - research what you can't afford.

However, in my experience, I found OOBE research to answer my questions. I'm actually surprised this wasn't already suggested. And no, I'm not an expert flier - it's pretty fudging scary to me still. I still get up and walk away when it begins as I fall asleep, and it's been happening every few months for 7 or 8 years. It's most likely to happen after a really relaxing yoga session. So yeah, not so much yoga anymore.

Feel free to PM me if you'd like to discuss.
