Not even. Its going to be another not-worth-announcing miniscule discovery story...

Exactly. Another yawnfest in the long list of scientific yawn fests.

"We found a planet that is brown colored! Exciting no?!"

Most likely Kepler has discovered some new planets that could possibly harbour life.

Cue a hypothetical discussion about ET life from NASA, the SETI rep and the astrophysicist.

Industrial Light and Magic will do the slideshow.

I would wager a lot of money it won't be any more exciting than this.

I mostly agree yet part of me says, John Knoll, for a slide show on just another promising planet? Something is new here

I am picking this is related to another thread here on ATS
Nasa States They Have no idea what these Orbs Of Light UFO's Are! about the video clip

NASA Rep: "our colleague was confused and off his meds when he said this"
SETI Rep: "nothings out there, but we still are looking. maybe one day. This was not it"
L & M Rep: "our image experts determined that these orbs, were just visual artifacts ..."
Kepler Rep: "anything we have found so far, are too far away, and would not hold life that could have any tech if they did"

.... or maybe just more over hyped planet discoveries

This is by far the most fascinating story i've seen on ATS today. The.combo of invites to this press release are the main factor.

Correct me if I am wrong, but SETI is set up to listen for extraterrestrial radio transmissions, yeah? That being said, they may have discovered something emanating from one of these planets in the "Goldilocks" zone. Couple that with imagery containing more intelligent artifacts around one of these planets to be explained by the pros... they may just be onto something.

Of course, they may also be campaigning for funds... or possibly let us down by stating that there appears to be a planet harboring 10 billion Obamas!

Either way, I am subscribed and I will be listening

I have worked with John Knoll. I can say two things about him that I believe are quite accurate.

1. He is a genius with a deep personal interest in space.

2. He is in no way responcible for Jar Jar Binks.

nasa i am so tired of there useless announcements, every time they get my hopes up for disclosure, then they crush my dreams of contact with some discovery of a microbe oh sorry possibility of a microbe. they should announce they are no longer viable as a space agency due to America being broke and obama cutting there funding and as for the seti delegate & Industrial Light & Magic Rep they have bought the remaining nasa assets and are producing a movie in regards to the death of nasa

or this could be it, the big D..........................................yeah right

They're going to make an announcement on earth-like planets that they have found.

Still, more exciting than an insurance seminar.

what they have found! what about what they already have? there is nothing exciting about this, they are just trying to justify there paychecks and get more funding. tax payer funding. they are useless hacks for gods sake shut them down or open the flood gates release the truth

"we are not alone, we have never been alone and now more are coming"

that is the only announcement I wish to hear from nasa

An interesting thought...perhaps with the deafening noise of the economy's death gurgle, NASA's going private. Could you imagine what such an agency could do? NASA for the experience, SETI for the ethics and drive, and ILM for the optics tech + Hollywood backing?

There would be a moon colony within two years. Mars within five. NASA couldn't function without releasing *all* the cool new toys and giving the private individual access to them. They wouldn't be able to afford it. Space is expensive, releasing cool tech would go a long way for the funding.

I'd *fully* support the privatization of space exploration.

I'd like to see them start to bring up materials to build a real deal space station. One big enough to house hundreds, if not thousands of workers and scientists. Big enough to have a huge organic food farm. Big enough to have a bay to store vast amounts of raw materials. Tough enough that space debris isn't going to do jack. Big enough so that they can start putting together space craft in orbit, instead of on the ground. Unmanned debris gathering drones. Maybe even start work on a massive colony ship, big enough to house a huge multi-generational crew, large organic food farm (like on the station). They can start building the huge hull and interior now and put the advanced propulsion systems and radiation shielding in when it's discovered down the road. The new rocket designs NASA is hailing can lift up to 130 metric tons. That's a lot... I'd like to see them using that ability frequently.. Or they can make the space elevator concepts more viable and safe and implement that instead.

Wishful thinking.... oh well..

Cheers

now that's the kind of pioneering spirit needed at nasa or any so called space agency that would create a bunch of jobs & ignite the imagination of a new generation of children that look up at the stars dreaming to one day travel among them

99% sure this is what it'll be. Probably with hypothetical models of what the planet might look like.

Oh fer cryin' outloud, if the question irritates, leave it alone! I didn't read all these pages, I just came upon that live press conference going on and came here remembering I saw a thread titled on such an event. The first page gave times that were not my zone and I had no idea what time that would be for me. Thanks to the next person who gave a time zone closer to me to give me an idea whether it is morning, middle of day or evening! I guess that was NOT the press conference being discussed here.

no matter what the annoucement it will be interesting to those who find the subject matter exciting , I for one think the Kepler mission is indeed great and no matter what they find and report its always inetersing .

Hopefully they have found a planet that is within the goldilocks zone and is not tidally locked and orbits star in a system not so far away from us !

im excited
