Israel announced yesterday that it will be building 500 new housing units on the West Bank after the U.S. sent its approval earlier last week. The Palestinians are furious over these turn of events and oppose any settlement on the West Bank in hopes of establishing an independent state.

Although Israel is promoting peace amongst the Palestinians by withdrawing from Gaza, the apparent expansion into the West Bank region offsets peace dramatically and "will not bring about stability nor will it bring peace" (Palest. PM Ahmed Qureia).

In addition, the plans for the West Bank barrier, a construction which would very much hinder Palestinians from jobs, hospitals, and farmlands, has been revamped and now includes changes to a roughly 60-mile stretch from Elkana to Jerusalem and therefore extends the estimated completion date to 2005.

ap.washingtontimes.com
JERUSALEM (AP) -- Israel announced plans Monday for 500 new housing units in the West Bank, after an apparent U.S. policy shift that has infuriated the Palestinians. The Palestinians oppose all Jewish settlement in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, lands where they hope to establish an independent state.

The plan includes a full withdrawal from Gaza next year. At the same time, Sharon wants to strengthen large blocs of Israeli settlements in the West Bank. He says the moves will boost Israel's security and preserve its Jewish majority.

The United States, which supports the Gaza pullout plan, has signaled recently that it will allow Israel to build inside existing West Bank settlements, while remaining opposed to construction in undeveloped areas. In the past, Washington has objected to all settlement construction.

The United States should stop supporting anything in that region. It only creates greater animosity and such things must be stopped!

People wonder why America is hated, and this has to be the number one reason.

Exactly, you notice Israel says one thing then does another. We should pull our support from both sides and let them deal with thier own problems. With friends like Isreal, who needs enemies?

They do not want peace. The just want to be left alone to complete the genocide they have started.

The post says that the U.S., i.e. the Bush Administration, approved this move. It appears that neither Israel nor the U.S. want peace. The U.S. persists in imposing its Middle East agenda on the rest of the world. No WMDs in Iraq. The U.S.'s 1st reason for going there never existed. Saddam Hussein is gone. The U.S.'s 2substitute reason for being there no longer exists. Why are we still there? To force Iraqis to toe the U.S. line and develop the kind of government the U.S. wants in Iraq? Are there any lessons in history? Where else in the past 50 years did this agenda fail? And yes, this relates directly to the Israeli situation.

Is it not clear to everybody that this administration broke all records of unquestionable support of Israel and its occupation of the West Bank?

Why does everyone always hate the U.S. and it's allies? I understand that our politicians are corrupt and untrustworthy, but aren't ALL politicians and rulers everywhere? Every day leaders of other nations carry out atrocities far worse than anything most people can dream of, but the world only wants to pay attention to the big guys. And it's the big guys that are inspiring more change for the better in this world than anyone else.

The U.S. and Israel have made a number of more than generous offers over the past few decades... many of which complied with ALL or most of the Palestinian's demands, only to have the Palestinians back out on the deal at the last second. If anyone wishes for there to be no peace, it's the Palestinians.

Our enemies learned long ago that countries with signifigant freedoms are more easily attacked from the inside than from outside, and some of your views on this affair are proof of their success. They've learned to turn us on ourselves, and our own politicians with all of their distasteful scandals don't seem to make the situation any better.

Assuming that the majority of the human race is generally rotten... I gotta cheer for the home team lol.

Israel is a tiny lot. It's difficult to defend. But, it is Israel. The solution is to name it Schmooly. Now, if we name it Schmooly, then we can get all of its oil.
