Recent X and M flares have already sent particles to the Earth and the slow moving Coronal Mass Ejections (or CMEs) have cleared the solar wind creating the conditions for a “fast mover” (not quite different from Ocean waves which have been crazy lately!) that will snap the Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) right over the Earth very fast from a Coronal Hole Wind Stream (CHWS). This will be the one to watch, folks. The arrival will take place approx 9/11/11.

well folks, just when you thought it was safe to change your diaper re: "unconfirmed but credible 9/11 terrorist threats," our good friends at NASA via SolarIMG have indicated that around 9/11/11 a fast moving Coronal Mass Ejection will interact with Coronal Hole Wind Stream to snap the Interplanetary Magnetic Field over Earth.

why worry?
the recent X flare is one of the largest earth-facing flares for the year, and activity over the last week easily some of the most impressive for the entire solar cycle.
this type of activity has preceded some of the largest earthquakes of the year including that which struck Japan tragically in March. The possible connection between sun activity/upper earth weather and earthquakes is still very poorly understood and its certainly no exact science. However increasingly sophisticated measurement of solar weather patterns and the atmosphere by SOHO, STEREO, et al has strengthened observations by curious minds.
what else tends to happen inside of these space weather patterns? irrational human behavior! As a follower of both world markets and space weather, I've observed (amongst others) a strange correlation between flares and extreme market volatility. The most recent sell off of early august was flanked by two M-class and on X-class flare.
check out this iSWAC Cygnet to see the trajectory of the most recent CME
Lets be positive but prepared for anything this weekend! I, for one, work in times square and have welcomed the lack of tourists and traffic today (police are stopping/searching large trucks/vans before they enter the square). the peace and quiet is a nice break from the normal cacophony of horns and teenagers screaming at their fav pop stars.
pleasant weekend all! Cheers.edit on 9-9-2011 by chaeone86 because: grammar!edit on 9-9-2011 by chaeone86 because: fixed title.

What is different about this one?
Correct me if I am wrong but the X-flare a few weeks ago was stronger than the one we have on the way now. We got by without a scratch from a bigger one, why now will we have problems with a smaller one. I do not see the distinction.

The earth sits in the magnetic field of the solar wind, which drags out the magnetic field of the sun to the neighborhood of the earth. The magnetic field lines in the polar regions of the earth connect to the interplanetary magnetic field lines, which are being carried past the earth away from the sun at high speeds by the solar wind. When the interplanetary magnetic field is southward (as is the case here) it can connect easily to the earth's magnetic field, which emerges from the south geographic pole of the earth. Energy from the solar wind flow then goes into stretching the reconnected field lines into the "magnetic tail" of the earth. Eventually those field lines "break" and snap back toward the earth on the nightside. It is this process transferring solar wind energy into magnetic energy and thence into energy flowing into the earth's atmosphere as the magnetic field lines "snap" that drives the aurora. The aurora occur at the feet of the "last closed field line", which defines the auroral oval.

If these solar flares really do affect human behavior, with the full moon added, I'm betting we'll be seeing some interesting topics posted here over this weekend.
