LONDON (Reuters) - Europeans are plagued by mental and neurological illnesses, with almost 165 million people or 38 percent of the population suffering each year from a brain disorder such as depression, anxiety, insomnia or dementia, according to a large new study.

What would we do without people to help us realize how mentally ill we all are? As the definition of mental illness continues to expand, I expect there will come a day when it will include most all of us. I wonder if that 40% figure includes those who determine what defines mental illness. Then there is the financial benefit to big pharma every time more of the population is pronounced mentally ill. And one final statement: If they pronounce us all mentally ill and we let them do it and drug us and own us.... maybe they are right... we are retarded in some way.

Crazy people don't know they're crazy dude. Have you seen America's list alone ? Half the country is on Anti-depressants. I bet that number is higher, i've got relatives in New Forest, I know they're taking Anti-depressants, this is no surprise.

Well religious folks are mentally ill so I think 40% can easily be true.

Exactly what I was thinking when I read about this earlier, No wonder they keep coming up with new illnesses that make no sense. Have you ever looked up the symptoms of most diseases such bi-polar disorder? Well if you have you will realize we all suffer almost 1/2 of them and that's more than enough to put you on some lousy medication when your perfectly normal. Dumbing down society indeed.

Only 40%?

Hell we in America as by big pharma are "all" with some type of mental disorder including our children, we all need some type of medication, remember the big deal during the Bush administration in 2004 trying to pass mental screenings for adults and children . that was big pharma wet dream. sadly right now most over medicated Americans are already on some type of medication for the mental "needs".

My daughter did some clinical in a nursing home, most of the patients were in anti depressant drugs, some didn't even knew what they were taking.

I think that big pharma eyes and profits are now on the EU. Good luck.

you might put it down to the have's and have nots in todays society, that for sure causes stress - i remember spain, many years ago, simple life, seeing horses and carts, and a farming way, village life, then about 20 years ago the european union announced that money was availabe for roundabouts, what i hear you say, well if u are ever driving through spain stop and see in any town how many roundabouts they have created, and what followed after the roundabouts was yep u got it your friendly local banker offering secured government finance for roads, and then wait for it ..our local friendly bank offering interest repayable loans for yep correct again cars, wow a nice new car hey.. and no when u cant pay and u get used to having it well .. u become sad, add too that credit ratings, and all the phone and internet gadgets.. and when there is no work.. u feel what -- yep sad again..in the old days it was simple just get a horse and make sure we can breed a few of them..

I am European and I suffer from 2 ilnessess. Will I win something if I will admit that I suffer from depression and anxiety?

Anyway 40% mentally ill? I guess it depends on perspective, what their definition of being mentally ill is different to what some people think when they hear the words mentally ill.

and dont worry harry down the road can build a few carts, and larry can make saddles, and if need by we give them an hour or maybe two with grandma, she will always sort em out,,if u catch my drift, happy days they were.

Big pharma makes the red pills. They're called anti-depressants, some of these people have issues but these people on pills ? They're not too bad.

I wonder why they will not tell us the truth and say 100% of humans have a mental illness.
