Bugchasing is a slang term for the practice of pursuing sex with HIV infected individuals in order to contract HIV. Bugchasers may seek HIV infection for a variety of reasons.

Bugchasers seek sexual partners who are HIV positive for the purpose of having unprotected sex and becoming HIV positive; giftgivers are HIV positive individuals who comply with the bugchaser's efforts to become infected with HIV.

It's a pretty sad documentary. I don't see why anyone would want that death sentence just to fit in. That's not a sub culture you want to get into. To be young and have a fast ticking clock over your head counting down your days isn't something that you'd want.

Life is a precious thing don't throw it away.

I was taught in psychology we all have self destructive tendancies, could they be doing it as a kind of subconcious punishment? Maybe for being who they are? Coincidence that gay men are seen stereotyped with HIV?

I have heard about this kind of behaviour before.

To say that it is reckless and immoral would be an understatement. But, surely some heteros must indulge in this kind of behaviour, as well ?

I just can't fathom the mindset of people who behave in this way, but I'll be watching those videos later. It could be interesting viewing.

I count 10 in my profile as showing up www.abovetopsecret.com... only five have been removed or locked.

It's not uniquely gay however, we've had articles in the gutter press rags where white straight men say they slept with black women just to get HIV.

The reasons varied from "feeling more African" and not having to "worry about safe sex anymore".

Then we also have people who are convinced that HIV doesn't cause AIDS, and they think it's all a racist conspiracy.
They also make a point of sleeping around.

African prostitutes who know they have HIV, and their clients who seemingly don't care.

This fatalism is a feature of all heavily infected groups, and attempts at replacing proven public health campaigns with religious moralism has only made it worse.
They all need some serious counseling.

Well, here we have heterosexual gift-givers and bug-chasers, I suppose.

There are many self-confessed "bug-chasers" and "gift givers" on the Internet, many of them vengeful heterosexuals with a hatred of the other gender.
Then are also too many people who are too careless to protect themselves.
However, I don't see much point in advancing more psychological pathology by posting it here.
The fact is that the majority of HIV-positive people do not get it deliberately, neither do they spread it deliberately.

I've just completed watching the last of the OP's clips, and I must say that although I was at first skeptical of a homophobic intent in the thread (because not all gay men are positive, and not all straight men are negative), I have found them very informative.
They are not unproblematic documentaries - but I certainly found them very worth watching.

I hope what I added can also be useful on the topic of HIV/AIDS and the prevention of this virus.
Everyone on the planet is at risk, no matter how small the numerical odds.
I've been living with it now for 7 years.
We were the worst affected country on the planet with 5.5 million people infected.
We had a government that denied HIV caused Aids for a long time, and 300 000 people died.
Since then we've been very jubilant, with an upbeat message of hope.
But before getting lost in that euphoria, it is interesting to see Western people describing the reality.
Well, at least they're alive.

With around 15 million gay men in the US, and the CDC's annual reported cases of HIV among men having sex with men at 16,800, assuming 25% of those cases were "bug chasers", that only amounts to .02% of the gay population being bug chasers. That statistic of .02% probably isn't exclusive to the gay community.

The article was a lengthy feature on a so-called "intricate underground world"(2) of gay men who actively seek out sexual partners infected with the HIV virus, and who then practice unprotected sex in hope of becoming infected. A frightening prospect - but one that has been roundly discredited by HIV/AIDS experts and researchers

Well, I think that even if one watches the OP's clips there is very little on "bug-chasers".
They begin by asking questions about the perception of these terms at a gay rodeo.
But, unless I missed something, none of the interviews are specifically about, or admitting deliberate infections.
Carelessness and denial seem to form the main issues.

The people I've heard of having done this are usually quite arrogant and unrepentant.
They were probably sociopathic or suicidal before they became infected.

What I see in the clips is especially one very guilt-ridden young person, in an early stage of dealing with the diagnosis.
He may blame himself for his infection, but I doubt he was ever a bug-chaser.

You didn't watch the whole documentary obviously. It talks to to other homosexuals that set up sex dungeons and house clubs for people to get HIV/AIDS and ones that cruised online to meet ones that do have HIV/AIDS so they can get infected.

Not that it matters greatly, but my profile insists that I've started 6 threads when in fact I've only started 2.

Anyway while this topic is incredibly sad, it's obviously not just men among the homosexual community who do this and not even strictly reserved to the likes of contracting HIV. The CDC even used the outbreak of *Corrupted blood* in World of Warcraft to study human behavior.

Interestingly, whilst most people either tried to help others or tried to completely avoid being infected, others made it their mission to infect, be infected and spread it further. news.bbc.co.uk...

The dungeon party to me was not really set up for bug-chasing.
They assume that most of the men who attend are already HIV-positive, and it's up to the guests to protect themselves.
One does indeed find all kinds of pathology on the Internet, but the documentary never attends a specific "conversion party" where people march in HIV-negative and come out positive.
As such it doesn't quite deliver what it sets out to do, or what it documents in interviews are not quite the same problems as it discusses in the stock-footage narrative of computer screens and virus cells.

What I find interesting is that here we are told that HIV-positive people can reinfect themselves with other strains of the virus, but this seems to be of little concern in the US, and what this documentary warns against is the notion that being HIV-positive is a ticket to a have a barebacking orgy. Maybe there are fewer strains?
I think they should have explained the dangers of re-infection a bit more.

Well I see this thread got moved again to a different forum. It was in Social Issues, then got moved to General Conspiracies, now it's in Medical Issues.

Guess it will keep getting moved until it sinks into oblivion on gets locked.

It is a shame that a disease is the defining aspect of a Community of people. Poignantly said by one of the men in the video, "what would a parade be without AIDS floats?" and "what did they have before AIDS?"

Personally I do not think that anyone wants to cure anything, this is a Pharmaceutical Machine at its finest, perfected in Africa I am certain; I bet every "officer" or "administrator" under those organizations for raising money could not go without after having discovered the river of money that flows under them. I feel this way about Cancer and any other fund-raising disease or organization against a disease. If there is money involved it is corrupt and manipulated.

As for the myriad of reasons why someone would choose to open that door to unprotected sex, is too difficult to say. I myself have had sex with HIV positive men and there were several instances of unprotected contact. This is all in the past for me as I generally find that this "lifestyle" is coupled with the use of alcohol consumption, another evil in a book of evils if you ask me, perhaps even worse. Alcohol-use has no partnership with cognitive functioning! People simply just loose their inhibitions and their minds when alcohol and sex are mixed.

I am 48 now, I have been an openly Gay male since 1985. I am HIV Negative. My partner of 25 years is HIV Negative as well. I quit drinking alcohol roughly ten years ago.

If I were to evaluate this situation more clearly it really is less about what the "dumb and young" are incapable of realizing through their "poster campaign", in regards to remaining healthy, but rather the machine that is in place that is driving HIV should be identified. Then maybe the people can wake up to what they are really facing!

The medicine cabinet for the average HIV patient is equivalent to a personal Pharmacy! I kid you not! The money revolving through and around this monster and its perfectly "designed" treatments for Life is clearly nothing short of intentional murder, in my opinion.

What has happened across Africa was a purposeful use of people to extract the secrets at exploiting the masses so that ultimately the World could be victimized by its "results". I kid you not, this is my solemn belief that AIDS was "created" for the sole purpose of feeding the psychotic Pharmaceutical Machine.

As for the "Bug-Chasing" aspect of a lost Community, I can only hope that anyone that is Positive or Negative realize that the true Journey through Life has nothing to do with a disease, that is circumstantial and a derivative of something bad, a distraction that quite clearly has "evil intent" behind it. The Journey of Life should not be out of your control, but when it is, it is only because we stopped seeking the Truth and the Light. There are so many lost Souls amongst us right now and the Evil has the upper hand, but that tide will turn soon enough; however, the Machine will not lay down quietly! Society is the Machine! Society is SATAN because it is not human any longer.

Bless those men and women who are facing Death because they dared to Love!

These people are mentally sick, just by observing them for a short period will tell you they are not right in the head.

Basically they are pathetic individuals who seek attention and sympathy through illness. The cure is to send them to army boot camp, kick them in the ass and make them work real hard until reality kicks in...welcome to planit Earth!

Yes, I agree, they need counseling.

For a fully informed, current Western person that is a shocking choice.

But worse in my mind are the people who deliberately spread it, and the fact that HIV-negative people still do not consistently protect themselves.
