They proved the steel was weak a few years ago. They pulled a piece up, put it in a vice and hit it with a hammer, then watched as it shattered. It had a high carbon content, which means it didn't harden properly. And they recently found pictures that appeared to show fire damage along the hull on the side that was hit.

did they say it was from the titanic or the olympic?

If memory serves, I also believe the lookout guy was fired and replaced shortly before the Titanic's departure, and somehow, the new guy wasn't given keys to the locker, which contained the binoculars necessary for spotting the iceberg in time.

I may be remembering that wrong - haven't researched it in a while - but there's a lot of shadiness around the Titanic, and a lot of it involves several coincidences lining up.

Like these things so often do...
