From your description, it looks like something we get overhead all the time.
Locally to me is a RAF base housing Tornado Fighters, and, after takeoff, the usually migrate to a high altitude transit corridor that takes them out
to the ACM ranges over the North Sea.
Due to temperature being rather cold up there, and if they're running with afterburner/reheat on, the condensation of the jet exhaust forms the
contrail you're seeing. It would be very difficult to an untraine deye to see a fighter in low visibilty grey colour scheme at such an
altitude....
But then again, I could be completely wrong.......
(will try and get photos the next time its clear enough to catch them at altitude)
