A rescue worker explores subterranean passageways where the walls are lined with twisted metal and rubble

As New York gears up for the tenth anniversary of 9/11, this footage, taken by rescue workers, shows the eerie scenes in the basements beneath the wrecked skyscrapers. Workers from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) spent eight months documenting the scene in Lower Manhattan as they searched the six storeys beneath the complex.

Guided by periodic shafts of light, rescue teams made their way through the pitch-black as they searched for survivors. None were found. While some staircases remained down into the basements-cum-tombs, most of the pathways and escalators were blocked by debris, forcing rescuers to travel along pipes and squeeze through narrow gaps in the rubble.

Well, every year We Must remember 9-11 and the horrors of that day. These pics do that.

Not much to say. I am curious as to what people who knows much about the buildings have to say about the damage/evidence visable.

What a terrible time.

And then to see all over the news today that the FBI is having EVERY agent working this holiday.. as well as the NYPD etc. Smells like something is a for sure.... or at least they are lead to believe that.

I can clearly remember as a child and young adult taking that bank of escalators from the "path" train into NYC. I get sad and mad everytime I see pic like this. The WTC was a beautiful complex and an awsome structure that left a perminent impression in my brain. Thanks for sharing!

I was there one time. I met an atty outside one of the twin towers. My first time in NYC. Totally blew me away.

The next time I was there was on business and we stayed across the street in the Millenium Hilton (2005). I got a high floor, when I opened the window shades-not expecting to see... the Pit. I have some pics and vid but they are on 3.5's. I don't have a player hooked up for that. I will see if I can get one up and put some pics up.

Where are all the 9-11ers... ?

I would think newly released pictures and video taken soon after the attack could prove valuable--to many in many different ways.

I was hoping to learn a good bit as I am a total noob in the 9-11 area. I enjoy what I have seen previously on ATS when the ones who have studied the whole matter all types of ways.
