Sorry if this exists, and I've overlooked it...

I notice there are a lot of people being banned from the forum .. for what reasons, I don't know. But I do think that if someone is going to be X'd out of the equation, we could at least have a report on these decisions.. It kind of sucks to see that someone you may have had contact with, or liked their views, or something, gets booted and is never heard from again.

So, my request, assuming that this does not exist, is that when a contributing user is banned, that the community can at least get some kind of public record of this (while signed in) - who, when, and why. And I say contributing members so we don't include spam accounts. Or everything can be included in this list, but I just think it'd be cleaner without the spam accounts.

I just happen to see a lot of these 'Why was so-and-so banned?' threads, and I think it would be nice to know why someone was sent packing, rather than to just suddenly see their status as banned, whereas they no longer have a voice in the forum, and the decision is left a mystery.

BTW I used to do this on another forum of my own, so I am just sharing the idea, as the user's do respect it.

Please let me know your opinions on this.

Thanks

Seriously?

So, if you had a good friend on ATS, and they were given the boot, you wouldn't even care to know what happened to them?

Oh, I forgot who I was talking to, nvm.

I would like to know why some people get banned. I noticed a poster was banned the other day and reading through that users latest or last posts did nothing to sate my curiosity. I think some people must get banned for multiple accounts or stuff like that.

Yes. I often find myself digging through a user's posts to find out what may have caused such a decision... But, I've not once ever found any obvious reason as to why someone was banned.

If this was an 'anonymous' community, ok, who cares right? But we're not anonymous here.

And you know what I mean by anonymous.. In the sense your activity is linked to one entity (aka username)

If I had a good friend on ATS I imagine I'd have his e-mail and he would tell me what happened.

All that would happen with your system is someone complaining that "how come this guy got banned when this one didn't" or some nonsense like that.

Best the mods do their work behind the scenes.

I agree...why does there need to be a Blotter..? They only serve as a reminder of why mass punishment and group think is a failure.

You just don't get it...

I like slayer's posts.. If he was banned, don't you think it would be a courtesy to know why?...

If you don't care for the service, you don't have to read it. Some of us actually care about other contributors, whether we know them in person, or not.

OK, I will bite, how is it you know when someone is banned?

Seriously, is there a page with members names on it with an indicator? I have never even seen a page showing who is online so I may be missing an entire portion of this website.

There have been several times when I saw that a person was not able to accept stars on a thread and their Avatar and screen-name appeared diffusely blackened; I had asked but never caught up with a reply and I assumed that meant they had been blocked or banned, yet they were on a thread posting. Unless, of course, that is what it looked like on all of their threads after the banning. Seemed strange then and seems strange now.

I do remember the first few months on ATS, every time my U2U message lit up with a banner I swore it was a Moderator come to ban me! LOL I jumped out of my skin every time; I hated that thing.
Now it is a bit easier with the lighted ribbon.

Tell me how you know someone is banned, I really would like to know.

When someone get's fired from a job, it is not necessary for human resources to post the reason why for all to see just because people may like the guy. ATS isn't a job but it is run professionaly so the same standards apply I would imagine.

What if the person banned doesn't want the reason known do you still think you have a right to know? If the banned person wants people to know it's up to that person to contact people and make the information known.

If you're looking at their profile it will say banned underneath their username...

If you're looking at one of their forum posts, only their username will be shown.

As usual, you only see things from 1 perspective...

If one of us instantly lost our posting privileges, I'm sure some of us, including myself, would want the reason for their punishments to be known.

And when you're banned, you can't contact anyone. Hence the word Banned.

And comparing a website community to a company is a ridiculous comparison.

Maybe it's you that doesn't get it...and why are you bringing another member into this..? Present your argument on its own merit without needing to lean on another member's status, and you may find that your opinion holds more weight.

Otherwise you're a tool...

And when you're banned, you can't contact anyone. Hence the word Banned.

If you truly care about your 'friends', you should have contact info outside of ATS...your argument sucks.

And I'll digress from this under the circumstances that staff will offer me an answer if I contact them directly relating any given account.

Your right that I only see it from 1 perspective and it's the right one.

You have no right to know the business of other members and ATS is very good about that and I for one hope that it continues. It is a main reason I like this site so much.

And you're telling me, that should I respect the contributions of a user in the forum, I should have their email address?...

You're taking this a bit too literally like they are personal friends. I have a lot of respect for people here, much like many others, and don't need their personal contact information to justify that.
