Are they really important on here?

I don't think they really gain you anything except access to other forums such as the "Alternative substances" forum. I guess its looked at sorta like a reputation.

The concept behind them makes sense, but the way they are used by some members is somethign else entirely. I actually had a member tell me that because he had more star and flags, that what he said was right, and that the majority of people beleived him.

So yeah... take what you want from them...

As a general rule though -
If you post something anti american, dealing with comet elenin, haarp, anti israel, or conspiritorial when none exit, you will get massive amounts of stars and flags.

If you post the truth and engage in civil debate uysing acts and sources, it takes longer to accumulate stars and flags and earns the distinction of being called a government disinformationist, working for "TPTB" etc etc etc.

So yeah.. take what ya want from then...

I see some inane topics getting a boatload of s&f yet the more interesting ones get squat.

Lol.. I was wondering when someone would notice that...

I am also wondering when someone will feel bad and flag one of my threads to get me off the antichrist footing.. If I had any powers, it would have been done by now to keep my identity secret lol.

They are not important to me.
Nor are the points or negative points.
I'm not sure what importance it is to anyone, but I suppose it's important to some folks, since these things are there.

I can see a point to the flag system.....well written/thought out threads get more attention but....

...stars (IMHO) is just an ego thang. Pointless without its anti-matter counterpart.....the moron index

Until its stars & morons....the star count has little to no meaning.

I dont find them important.
Ive never really posted that many threads, i tend to contribute to existing threads.

I think they (stars) can be a good way of gauging the content of posts....ie, if you have more stars than posts you must be saying something people agree with....whether its right or wrong is debatable (the content).
I would imagine that was the purpose of them.

I personally think there should be a way to remove stars from members, you can flag and unflag, but you cannot undo stars. Ive seen posts that make little to no sense at all yet people come in and give stars.

I was under the impression folks gave you a star as a form of recognition for a good post or response that was appreciated

what woudl be great if you could turn them into frequent flyer miles or pick a gift from a catalogue for each so many stars

also mysterious is the gold and silver level contributor - there doesnt seem to be a threshold for posts/flags/stars so what's the rub?

if you are gold / silver wouldn't you get something like free upgrade to business class? A funkier animated avatar? the ability to have sound effect smileys?

The gold/ silver level is based on your WATS score which is some complicated algorithm based using your stars and flags. The top 100 or so members have one of these banners.

Do we get perks? Well yes, if you call seeing less or no adds as a perk.

It used to be that the ads disappeared when you reached Bronze level contributor but, then they got rid of the old system and I think they disappear gradually as your WATS score climbs.

When I first joined, I did hope for stars, for multiple reasons I guess. Now I see them more as representation of particular messages that resonate well within our community. A momentary communion of like minds, so to say..
Flags, as other's have mentioned, seem to support well presented threads with intriguing and unique topics. Sometimes novelty runs a heavy course through humor and chit chat as well I reckon.
