The Springfield M14. That gun saved my life in Iraq. To me, it's the best weapon ever made.

XM8, despite people often thinks this gun is heavier than M4, the XM25 CDTE which despite being heavier than XM8 gets adopted anyway by US military

Mine will always be the Colt M4/M16 series weapons...its what I used in the Army, so I am comfortable with its abilities

As I stated in another thread:

The FN FAL has got to be the greatest all-round battle rifle made.

this is what i generally use to terminate with extreme prejudice

but as rifles go...meh... hk416

people need to remember that there isn't one "ultimate" rifle, and many work well for a myriad of situations. much of it is personal preference.

It's not a combat rifle, but I dig my Mossberg 500 shottie. I've actually had to use it, once, post-Katrina. I never fired at the two thieves, BUT, just the sound of the action as I chambered a round of #4 buck caused them to leave the area quickly. Rifle wise though, I dig the M4/16 platform for midrange and just about anything in the 7.62(.308) realm. Can't beat a heavy bullet at long range.

i know this is cliche.. but i got to go with the good old AK47. id rather have the 7.62s stopping power then the 5.62 stopping power

Agree...I have the Springfield National Match...bottom line,if I can see it,I can kill it...anywhere in N America...its all i need....I dont plan on engaging at long range...if they are that far away,I can hide...but an AK is limited to about 200-300 yds effective at max....the NM will go a 1000 if I HAVE to....

A K98 German Service Rifle(German Mauser 98K.) was no way a good rifle.

The sights were poor, the workmanship on some left a lot to luck.

The M1 was by far a better weapon. followed by the 1903 Springfield. A3 sniper rifle.

I own both a Mauser(VZ24 brno) and the M1

My mauser has a scope added and is now a descent rifle. and i am working on mounting a scope on my M1 and it will be even better.

Your favorite combat rifle is an airsoft replica of an "M700 sniper rifle"?

Okay, I know nothing about guns... and even that sounds.... like an odd choice to me.

My farourite still has to be my old service rife the L1A1 FN SLR 7.62 (308). Big but accurate and plenty of stopping power.

I would say... Hands down - The AK-47, IN 7.62X39. The accuracy is good enough for government work.

I think that the elephgant poachers in Africa, use AK's in 7.62X39. Try using a AR-15 in 5.56X45, and the shooter might just find himself pounded into dust on the jungle floor by an elephant.

On the other hand, the lighter weight of 5.56X45, or the 5.45X39, makes a huge difference in portability and recoil control.

I'll still opt for the AK-47, in 7.62X39, because of it's reliability, the ease of finding ammo throughout the world and the much better effectiveness in destroying cinderblock over the 5.56X45.

Asking a question like this about any of the Top 7(women,whiskey,guns,knives,politics,dogs,or religion) and for every person submitting, you will get a different response.....Its basically a waste of time unless you are a student of human nature(I like to start dog-knives-guns discussions in bars and see what pops out)posting such a question in a forum like this wont get you much of a straight answer...not one that is duplicated enough to make a decision anyway...for the AK Fan Club,Id love to see you shoot a 5 inch circle at 350 yards with open sights...something easily done with an M1A,a Garand or an FN-FAL,,,or a standard AR15/16 for that matter....AK's arent made to shoot like that...and if you are planning on using it for your "one" survival rifle you need to think about having the ability to kill anything you can see...which an AK cannot

My favorite is the AK-47.

There's still an argument as to which gun is better and the AK is almost as old as WW2, that's what I call a legend

Older isnt always better...the M16 was developed in the late 50's and its had about a 1000 upgrades...age doenst make great
And I agree the AK is a good platform....til you get to 250 yds with a "have to make" shot
