Waking up and seeing dark figures? Nightmares?

I'd like to just keep it short and see if anyone else has been experiencing this as well? If not, I'll just shrug it off as nightmares...Lately, in the middle of the night I'll wake up and think I see dark figures in the room and become nervous (granted it's in a half asleep moment so it's LIKELY just awakening from a nightmare) but this has been happening A LOT. They seem to come towards the bed and then I have to make myself aware that I was dreaming. But then after I'm awake I still seem to see things move around until I can focus and make them go away. This type of thing has been happening far more often than what I would say is common....I thought nothing of it (other than just a form of night terrors or something) until my girlfriend had said something similar about nightmares and waking up scared a lot lately...

Does anyone have any thoughts?

interesting thread ..

Do you by any chance experience paralysis when this happens ?

Have you had anything strange go on in your house lately or ever?

Haha, no I haven't been smoking any weird stuff
As for sleep paralysis, YES but only when I have my eyes closed (I hope that make sense) It doesnt happen when I'm actually "seeing" or perhaps "imagining" these things. It's just creepy and has gotten pretty bad recently.

As for something strange going on in the house lately. Until you just asked I hadn't even thought of this, but just a few nights ago I actually had to wake my dog up from having a nightmare (geez, thanks now I'm a bit more creeped out)...He was whimpering loud and I had heard him from the bedroom. I actually had to shake him out of it (I know dogs sometimes act like theyre running when they sleep, but this was a loud cry like he was scared or being hurt)....Any thoughts?

Had a similar experience once, and it lasted about seven days. Seeing the same things at night over and over again whilst trying to sleep.

Never had it to the same extent again. Can be very scary. I'm not sure why it just stopped, but after perhaps just under a week things went back to normal. Nothing special was happening in my life at the time except I was in a different house to usual.

On a side note, if a person I'm with is having nightmares I can find myself having dark thoughts during sleep, too.

Yeah, not a bad idea. But the problem is I don't think what I'm seeing is actually real. It could just be my mind playing tricks on me type of thing. It's hard to explain. The frequency of it is what's creepy. That's why I figured I'd hop on ATS and see if others were experiencing anything similar or had any ideas as to why

Something like this happened to me once. My alarm went off and I immediately woke up and reached down to turn it off (its on the floor beside my bed). While I was lifting myself up and reaching down to turn it off, I saw something sitting in a chair beside my bed out of the far right of my vision. It looked to be something like a shadow sitting in the chair! Because I was focused on turning off the alarm and had just woke up a microsecond earlier, by the time I turned off the alarm and looked at the chair, it was gone.

I found it extremely intriguing, for I had just been reading about people whom had been taken out of their bodies while they slept by 'aliens'. It might have been nothing, but I am certain something was there. I looked at it as an opportunity to see something fantastic, and wasnt afraid (well, not that much lol). I sure would welcome an 'alien' again if it turned up in my room!

Take this for what you will, but if you feel so strongly as to come and post this on a site with traffic as high as this one, then I'm going to say your gut sure thinks it's more than imagination. Trust your gut and, if it happens again, your dog.

I personally think humans have a developed sense of our surroundings beyond the normal senses. We've just spent a few hundred years learning to completely suppress what took 10's of thousands of years to develop and refine. I still believe that if a threat becomes great enough or no threat but our surroundings are far enough out of whack, that sense still powers through our collective disbelief and rings the gong for warnings... Perhaps what you are seeing is 100% real.....just too transient to nail down?

laughed at the devils grass comment, but have you recently been on a course of codeine? i about 2 or 3 times a
year have to use codeine, old injury..medical discharged...blah blah. it affects me this way.bad nightmares that when you first wake you can construe any shadow as anything,a visit to the toilet is a lights on experience.must take 3 to 5 mins to come awake properly

Thanks Wrabbit, well (deep down) yes my gut is telling me it COULD BE something, but I guess I'm trying to brush it off. I'd rather think it's just nothing and that it's something in the air or something I ate, etc...I guess I've been trying to think of explanations people would say are "rational" instead of freaking myself out....but you can only shrug something off so much, you know??

Viper - I haven't been taking any pain killers or anything to that effect. That's the weird thing is I just can't place it as to what could be causing it

You know what you're feeling best, but my guess would be if you are seeing something real and it/they meant to harm you, they would have by now. That is something to keep in mind if you get to feeling really off about the whole thing.

Maybe a web cam wouldn't be a bad idea? I'd never expect it to capture the full image of what you've glimpsed, but TAPS and similar ghost hunting shows suggest there may still BE something to see if you know when to look at the video. You'd know within a couple minute window of exactly when to check it, right?

Thanks for the links. I see a lot of people just dismiss it at as a form of sleep paralysis, maybe that's it...maybe more....I guess it wouldnt hurt to set up a video camera. But I know as soon as I do nothing will happen

Waking up and seeing dark figures? Nightmares?

There are some nights when I wake and I feel as though I am someone else and in a strange place I do not know. I sit on the edge of the bed and for a split second or two, I know who I am and where I should be. But this quickly washes away and I fade into recognizing my surroundings.

On one occasion, I woke and felt I was NOT alone. I was under the distinct impression that there was someone else near me... someone that I knew and that as soon as I turned, I would see them. When I did turn, there was a fading shadow that dissipated into nothing.

The rest of that day, I could not look into anyone's eyes for long. Even my pet dog... his deep dark eyes just sent my emotions for a spin. It was like I was dredging up something I definitely did not want to recall,

A few nights after that, the same thing except when I spun on my bed, I saw someone standing next to the bedroom door. I knew them but just that quick, it all faded and I was back to me again.

I have suffered from night terrors since 1998... and will occasionally sleep walk into the hallway.

What it means is probably medically related but it damn sure can be weird.

Woah, what you're saying almost seems like an "alternate reality". Way creepy, but way interesting as well. I've has the same thing happen about "feeling like you're in a strange place" or taking a minute to grasp where you are. It's some weird stuff.....

I had the same thing happen to me about 7 years ago. This first time this happen to me was during sleep paralysis. I opened my eyes unable to move and saw these shapeless shadow things along the right side of my bed & actually felt a few pass over my body and began to form a larger growing shadow on my left. I woke up terrified & thought it was some kind of demon. I kept on telling myself that years later. About a year ago while trying to fall asleep it began to happen again but this time I was still awake and able to move. The weirdest part is that I was seeing these "rolling shadows" while my head was facing directly down on my pillow. This time I didn't feel threatened or scared. I let what ever it is just be, pass thru, even welcome it. I am also trying to figure out exactly what it is or is happening. My theory is that while I am trying to fall asleep my brain is functioning in a different manner which is allowing me to see these weird energy flows.

These are shadow people. The fact there are so many threads referencing them lately makes me wonder why the spike in activity. hmmm very curious.

Shadow people with hats! I thought you where joking, but clearly not. I can't belive some people acctually belive in those thing.

Probably it was just hallucinations. I teend to get those types of hallucinations when I wake up or is really tired,
