Well, that kid is obviously pretty clever. I'm not sure the test he used was the best comparison though. It says he made the tree, and tested it against the same number of solar cells in a row laying flat. The control cells should be set up on a real array which is at the proper angle, and slowly tracks the sun across the sky. His experiment gives a good idea of why trees branch off their leaves in a certain way, but it does not prove that his photovoltaic tree is any better than current photovoltaics.
