I dont do much sci fi so these 2 are good..

Avatar, I dont know.. it was more politically directed at todays events than anything I think..

Blade Runner.
The first Matrix.
Dark City.
Equilibrium.
Empire Strikes Back.

Just adding that If you watch Dark City and Equilibrium that pretty much gives you the first matrix, and done better imo so I could remove the matrix and add any of the following in its place Serenity, T2, Aliens, maybe even the Abrams Star Trek reboot and Tron Legacy which i really enjoyed as well.
In no particular order.

Here are mine

Bladerunner
A Boy and His Dog (Very rare - I still don't have it)
2010
Alien
Outland (always liked Francis Sternhagen)

2001 almost made it, but... A Boy and His Dog is from a story by Harlan Ellison - you know, Jurassic Park, Andromeda Strain, and it starred Don Johnson before he pushed his jacket sleeves up.
edit on 17-8-2011 by Ittabena because: to fix Balderunner, lol

If i can recommend a movie. It is a B-movie that takes out so many big budget flicks. Took me by surprise. A decent Alien Abduction Thriller/Horror to say the least.

Top 5 is realy tough to choose from so many greats.

1, metropolis, still as relevent and important a movie as when it was made in 1927

2, Alien, gritty, great visual style and fantastic story, and the best monsters in movie history

3, Blade runner, deep complex diologue, amazing visuals and compelling characters/story.

4, Akira, cyberpunk sci-fi at its finest and very influential anime movie.

5, Terminator, all round great movie.
