Because living organisms are run by molecular chemistry, which is a naturally occurring phenomenon. The message your brain sends to your muscles to elicit a contraction? Chemistry. The breakdown of materials for nutrients? Chemistry. Everything your body does boils down to chemistry.

How can matter become self aware though? How can I think about thinking, for example. Why is there an "I" in the first place. For some reason I couldn't care less about the cells and bacteria in my body, but rather this "I" that I percieve. Somehow their idea of coming together to survive longer makes no sense.

That's not what the topic of this thread is about. If you want to discuss the origins of consciousness, I'd suggest starting a new thread. I imagine it'd be a very large discussion.

Cellular life started close to a deep sea vent. That's why the deepest branching bacterial phyla (Thermatogae & Aquifex) are hyperthermophiles.
