Don't get on me about the source. I hate Fox News as much as anyone else. It's just where the content is coming from.

I think the outcome of this current push will help us all to realize where PBS agenda in regards to these issues lies. We all speculate that PBS has been involved in the "gaying up" of our youth. It seems that way to a lot of us at least.

An online push is under way to pressure the producers of "Sesame Street" into having Bert and Ernie get married.
More than 900 people have signed a petition about the pair of platonic puppets on Change.org as of early Wednesday.
"We are not asking that Sesame Street do anything crude or disrespectful," the petition reads. "It can be done in a tasteful way. Let us teach tolerance of those that are different."

Source

I'm an advocate for gay marriage so please don't take this posting as being anti-gay by any means. I'm just not sure this type of influence is good for the youth.

What say you, ATS?

This sums up everything. Why do we wish tolerance of differences? Why push that differences exist? Do we simply want people to 'tolerate' one another, or do we want people to accept that they are just another human occupying the same planet? The differences between us are negligible and should be treated as such.

And, why bring Bert and Ernie into this? Good Lord, they are cartoons...must they be given a sexual identity?

PBS is resisting and already issued more than one statement declaring this is not ever going to happen. It seems unfair to blame PBS for something other people want them to do, especially in light of them not doing it. It is more like a small segment of gay activists want to "gay up" sesame street, not sesame street gaying anything else up.

VERY well said. It isn't about gay or hetro to me, it's about sexual subjects and controversial topics on a childrens show geared toward the youngest among us. Can't these kids just be allowed to enjoy childhood without tackling the big issues adults can't even get right? The kids have plenty to worry about in a childs world without adding the questions of what position they should take on issues FAR above their level of thinking...

Or is it just about propaganda value and shaping the minds of the Children before they're old enough to even realize it's being attempted?

While I do believe that children should be raised to be open-minded and accepting of all people, I oppose this push. Not because it would be bad for children (it wouldn't...), but because it's only real effect would be pissing off hate-filled evangelical parents to the point of insanity. Social and political issues have no place in a children's show. Will we find out that Big Bird is Muslim next? The most they should do is teach kids that people are different in all kinds of ways, and that's okay.

Also, should there really be any romantic relationships in shows made for small children? Little kids don't need television making them think they *need* a boyfriend/girlfriend.

you are about 10 minutes late on this one.

www.abovetopsecret.com...

Also, it's not PBS's/Sesame Street's petition.. it's an outside party. The producers are against it.

If you think it is bad for Bert and Ernie to finally realize their sexuality, just wait until their wedding night when they look down and find out there are humans hands shoved up inside of their anal cavities sticking all the way into their hands and skulls. Fingers pushing inside every inch of their bodies manipulating their every action, every word, every thought.

It is kind of similar to the IRS.

The gays are out of control. It comes down to this. Who cares what you do in your home behind closed doors. Gay people have sex with members of the same sex that should not give you special rights. The gays want the world to know what they do in bed they flaunt sex in front of everyone without a care. Its ok to declare that you want and like sex with the same sex. Just dont do it in front of me. I dont flaunt my sexuality in front of you. There should be a level of discretion with what you do privately. The other thing that bugs me is this. Why do they talk like that why not use your natural voice. Is it because you want everyone to know that you are gay. Once again who cares. We have always known that Bert and Ernie were Gay. That is what is so cool about their relationship. No one ever cared. I think as Gay characters they have it right. They are discreet and dont flaunt their sexuality in front of the world. They dont explain it or talk about it. Bert and Ernie.....Being gay the right way!

In 2007, Sesame Workshop president and CEO Gary Knell famously wrote, "They are not gay, they are not straight, they are puppets… they do not exist below the waist."

I don't see why it would be such a big deal for kids to see Bert and Ernie tie the knot. But, it only seems fair to show that Oscar keeps a stash of meth in his garbage can and Big Bird and that big elephant looking dude are getting it on as well. Might as well throw it all at the kiddies, what could it possibly hurt.

I say let children be children.....let them remain in innocence and happiness for a while......when I was in preschool and kindergarten.....they were some of the happiest times in my childhood,,,swinging high on swings,,,,eating ice cream bars,,,,,dancing around the May pole.....there is plenty of time for children to learn about grownup issues in middle or high school.....I think these little ones should be left to their innocent dreams for a while....

welllllll Lmao we can't say we all didn't know this was coming....I used to make jokes with my friends when I was a kid about how we thought they were weird kinda gayish...Whatever it doesn't matter, just don't let your kids watch the show if it bothers you as a parent easy enough.. I personally wouldn't let my kid watch the show or to much t.v in general so I might have a jaded opinion on that....I don't have a kid but I'm raising 3 boys that are my girlfriends and I 100% notice a change in personality when they watch certain shows Sesame Streets not too bad but Sponge Bob I personally think the humor is for adults but the kids don't get it so they just see cartoons acting certain ways that aren't appropriate but they don't know any different so they mimic it an learn bad behavior..

And don't take the me makin jokes as a kid as a gay hating statement..I was a kid and my girlfriends good friend is a FTM and I live in SF bay area..I'm just sayin as a kid I knew thats not what i was and as a kid i made jokes because it was different and thats what kids do

Sesame Street is about making friends.

They are puppets. They have nothing to do with sexuality at all.

Do NOT blanket all gays as promoting this - - as I read comments elsewhere on this - - many gays are appalled by this suggestion.

I have not read one comment from a gay person that supports this.

Also, would this marriage result in them moving their beds together? Since they now sleep in separate beds, does this 'marriage movement/whatever-it-is' promote no-sex-before-marriage? Something tells me that they don't.

And what about Spongebob and Patrick? Those two got some 'splaining to do.

Maybe we need a thread examining the sexual identities of cartoon characters (and muppets)...

To be honest, I thought this was a joke when I first saw it.

I am not sure how to take this at all. Personally, I never liked Sesame Street, even when I was a kid.. I was more of a Transformers/Thundercats/Knight Rider kinda kid.

I see far better ways to express these ideals rather than embedding them in the minds of little kids in my opinion.

And people wonder why society is so messed up now... -.-

When Burt and Ernie started out, the term "gay" meant... to be a Happy and Frivolous, and of enjoyable disposition.

Not guys munching on "Oscar Meyer Wieners."

When I was a teen, Homosexuals were "Homos, Poofs, Queers" etc.

Being a gay person shouldnt even be associated with it.

The word Gay even use to be a Girls name!!!

Lets go back to Poofs etc.
