All these copycat disturbances are taking place in areas with high proportions of ethnic communities.
Not being racist, just stating facts.

I'm wondering about the U.K. and the nature of its cities. Are there certain cities that are more prone to riots like these, due the age of the poplation, or something like that? Employment levels? I think someone predicted it would happen in a certain city, and I'm wondering what that prediction could be based on. (Sorry, from Canada here.) More directly, my sister is in York. Is it possible that riots could start there too?

there are reports of multiple cars set alight near to Winson Green prison, first the bullring, then the mailbox, and now the prison. If the prison is breached then all hell could literally break loose in birmingham.

"At one point it looked like the people who lived in Clapham Junction were going to go across the road and attack the rioters.

"But [the residents] just said stop, don't do this, you'll get yourself killed."

Hmmmmm..........

So, it is getting to the razor thin edge of breaking into open citizen on citizen (vigilante) conflict. If the rioters keep it up for another day or so, then I expect calls for restraint will start to fall on deaf ears, and people will start taking it into their own hands attack the rioters.

As i said before, we could well have civil war on our hands, on the bottom of page 4. Some people said it was scaremongering, but it seems more and more possible as the time ticks by.

I've just got back from Birmingham city centre.

Had to walk 5 miles because they completely stopped all traffic in and out, at around 10pm.

I just quickly checked the news, and they seem to be playing it down alot.

I first arrived at around 9.30 pm, and almost a soon as I got there, there were about 250 people randomly tearing through the one high street.

The police took their time making any kind of approach, and then just formed an orderly line at the one end holding their position. They pretty much allowed everyone to raid what ever they wanted and let them disapitate them selves.

At first I though that was a good tactic because within the short time it took to loot everything, the street would clear.

However, the looters just carried on to the next hight street and continued. Again the police were rather slow in responce and barely looked imposing.

Any way that pattern continued for a least a few hours, with the looters systematically taking each road.

I noticed the police though, there were slowly trying to box everyone in the centre of town, they were approaching from all positions, but this wasnt obvious to many it seems.

Any way, I left eventually when it had all died down, they managed to pretty much secure the town centre, with a just a few odd gangs around who werent interested in looting.

On my journey home though I witnessed a few small shops being robbed, presumably by the same looters.

The police tactics worked in the end, but they could have done it faster!! They barely moved to stop anyone doing anything....which I find strange. The responce to each place that had been robbed was probably on average 25 minutes. Is that strange?

By the way I would just like to say I did not encounter any violence, and I was amoung people that you might "expect" it from.

All everyone wanted was loot.

And I am kind of sorry to say, yes the majority of "rioters" were young black men.

Had to say it because I heard certain black friends telling everyone else not to be racist, when everyone had just merely described the main purpertrators.

So there you go, a real account, cuz the BBC didnt seem to keen on repoerting that.

The British government can't afford this civil unrest to go on any longer. I think extra police will be drafted in from across the U.K. to the troublespots, and recover some sort of normality, and the people causing the trouble will either fade away or be subdued, for the time being at least. Having heard about some of the things that have gone on, the public at large will have no sympathy for the rioters, as there is no reason whatsoever for their behaviour. Just mindless damage and stealing ( ...And not just from commercial premises.) for its own sake.

I saw a couple of water cannons heading towards the ferry in Belfast last night, my guess is they are on their way over to help out.

Hello, everyone. Can anyone from northern uk keep me updated if it spreads farther north?
My family lives in Hartlepool! If riots break out there, all hell will break loose ( a hell of a lot of fighting goes on there, just on a friday and saturday night!).
I have been thinking that it is really weird that in the last what three/four months, we have seen worldwide rioting and demonstrations going very wrong! How else can you explain it, but for the fact that there must be powerfull people behind it, that are pulling the strings and deciding how it starts en how it progresses, or am i just paranoide?

1700 more 5.0 been drafed in from around the country to try and deal with the stuff in London. Thing is people have been saying it for a while now, Its only going to get worse. Now whether it started because of a shooting in Tottenham, or the 16 year old girl getting a beat down from the police, it's now nothing more than a well organized robbing session. But it will get worse more & more people will take to the streets with more infighting amongst the looters & rioters because someone got a better TV than them. And as someone in the post above said soon Jo Public is going to have had enough & are going to fight back. The guy who lost his store in Croydon last night said "If I had a gun I wouldn't have a problem shooting these thugs" or words to that effect.

The worrying thing is that there is no real reason for the violence & rioting, unlike the riots Central London had back in April where there was a message (albeit lost due to splinter groups of anarchists) the message was straight at the government about the University fees. But these riots have no message, have no reason. I understand that in some cases there is no change without revolution.

To quote Che Guevara "The question is one of fighting the causes and not just the effects. This revolution is bound to fail if it doesn't succeed in reaching deep inside them, stirring them right down to the bone, and giving them back their stature as human beings. Otherwise, what's the use? "
