The lightning flashes in the video appear to be ordinary lighting flashes that have turned red through passing through a lot of atmosphere, as the Sun does when it sets. However, it is possible that some of the more unusual things you have been seeing are due to the storm being a supercell that is creating unusual electromagnetic phenomena such as jets, sprites and elves. You can read about them here:

www.albany.edu...

And, yes, the elves may very well have something to do with the recent CME. I'll ask OzWeatherman to check out this thread.

Can't wait to see your observation. What perspective in MO are you in coordinate to the OP?

i saw the flashes. at first they were random in the sky, but all north. there is a small stormy patch on the radar just coming out of nebraska. i live north of kansas city. the only heat lightning that i've ever seen (for sure) was the orange heat lightning that strikes over KC herself in the muggy dog days and nights. so, i don't actually know what color heat lightning looks like outside of KC. we always assumed it was orange because of the pollution/exhaust. so i'm sorry if i'm limited in my experiences there. i didn't see any fireballs however. i did keep seeing blurs in the sky but that could have been my eyes playing tricks on me.

and as for the 'behind the stars' comment...

the lightning does appear to be strange looking. its extremely brief, even for lightning, it doesn't light up much of the sky, and it is intenseley white and clear, very pure looking. its striking above clouds facing north, so its probably part of that cell, but there is still an eeriness to the flashes. a mile away from our neighborhood is a trailer park and their dogs were goin wild and i heard lots of women and kids screaming. then again, it is a trailer park. sorry for the generalization haha ( i grew up in one, i know how it can be).

In Tucson AZ here.

Saw something strange that sounds kind of like what you described the other day. I assumed it must be lightning only I couldn't SEE any lightning, only flashes, lots and lots of flashes with very little time inbetween. The sky and clouds would light up but there was no thunder or rain or anything else to suggest it could be lightning besides the flashes themselves.

Very strange to read about here.

Yeah I saw it too.
I am just West of St. Louis and my wife and I stepped outside on the back deck at around 11:00 or so and were startled at what appeared to be flashes in the sky very rapidly!
It looked like a very fast strobe light and it was casting a shadow.
We quickly moved to the front of the house where it appeared to be coming from and saw that the source was somewhere on the horizon maybe N.E.

I expected it to be lighning even though it looked nothing like lightning cuz....well.......what else could it be??
Imagine my surprise when I saw that there wasn't a cloud in the sky.

Again, it was the very rapid strobing that distinguished it from lightning and also the blueish cast it gave off.

I dunno.

I was wakened up by flashing coming through my venetian blinds at 5am this morning. I live in Scotland, UK, so I am 5 hours ahead of the east coast of America. Anyone else see it? It was like someone taking a camera flash, like it flashed a few times then didn't come back for 5 minutes. It lasted for about an hour and there was no thunder or rain, just fast rollling clouds that appeared low. It was a pure, intense bright white light that was not like sheet lighting or anything else I have ever seen before. I know there were major M class flares coming from the sun and they touched down in Norway just before I went to bed according to spaceweather.com. Could it have been them causing the light show? Will it be harmful as they now are entering earth's atmosphere? Anyone know?

I live in Florida and about two weeks ago I seen some flashes of light in the sky. I think it may be a rare case of lightening that I have never seen before...very interesting. I included a video of what it looked like. The video claims that it is a cloaked ufo..I do not.

youtu.be...

I want to add that what I saw was constant lightening flashes with no thunder and no incoming storm. It looked like it was in a cloud, no other clouds around. Some kind of weird weather.

I am in central Kentucky. The other night, about 8 days or so ago, it would seem the same thing happened here. It was about dusk, the sun was going down and it was that blue sky mixed with the clouds (you know how it looks when the sun is not shining but still a little light out.

So I was standing on my front porch and I noticed the sky light up with lightening above the clouds, no actual bolts, just lightening. I thought it was weird. I waited and did not hear any thunder. I stood there waiting for thunder and then all of a sudden the lightening kicked up again and it lit up the sky like the clouds were being electrified (I know, start with the electricity jokes, this is the only way to describe it). It kept up for about 5 to 10 minutes. It was a beautiful sight to see. I was still weirded out as there was no thunder to be had at all.

I just chalked it up to some kind of "Heat Storm" or whatever.
