this is a fair comparison and one that i have always enjoyed discussing with people...i have seen both these bands in concert back in the mid eighties and they both were very intense and awesome to see and listen to in person.metallicas first album came out in 1983. i saw metallica with cliff burton, their earlier bass player three months before he was killed and their first three albums with him playing bass are to me easily their best with songs like,[master of puppets, fade to black, for whom the bell tolls and seek and destroy] among many others...metallica has said "iron maiden have been the blueprint for everything that we have ever wanted to do" and even lady gaga says that iron maiden are her favorite band...iron maidens first album came out in late 1979,three years before metallica and in my opinion iron maiden are the originators of this kind of rock/metal music with songs like [running free, phantom of the opera, number of the beast, revelations, where eagles dare] and many more, they get my vote...iron maiden is number one!

Iron Maiden for me.

Good ol rock.

Metallica on the other hand are just copyright nerds, the vocalist cant sing, Ulrich think's he's the best drummer...but he aint, Def Leopard drummer played with 1 hand.

Iron Maiden, cooler band, great skeleton mascot.

Iron Maiden is far from being the originators of rock/metal. Black Sabbath, King Crimson, Deep Purple were playing heavy metal way before Maiden.

I have seen Maiden live a few years back at Ozzfest. They were a buzzkill. Making comments about how anyone smoking reefer in the audience was a delinquent and praising god blah blah blah. Needless to say I am not a huge fan of Bruce Dickinson.

Metallica gets my vote hands down.

These guys ruled the heavy metal world all through the 80s and deep into the 90s, even after losing their bassist (Cliff Burton is a god!!).

If I could travel through time one of the first places I would go would be the Monsters of Rock fest, Tushino Air Field Moscow Sept. 28, 1991.

AC/DC
Metallica
Pantera
The Black Crowes
E.S.T.

Rumored that there were over 1.6 MILLION people in attendance.

iron maiden has a song from their 1984 powerslave album called "rime of the ancient mariner" that is over thirteen minutes long and is a sonic odyssey that blows away any song metallica has ever done...although i prefer iron maidens first two albums [iron maiden and killers] with their singer paul dianno ,who i wish had stayed in the band!!...those two albums created a new sound in rock with a punk/metal edge...those two albums and the following [number of the beast] have drumming by clive burr who is simply fantastic and the most underrated drummer in all of rock and i wish that he had stayed in the band as well because he blows away his replacement nicko mcbrain...

1st tier Black Sabbath Judas Priest.

They both suck, but Iron Maiden gets the nod over Metallica.....not to mention the whole Napster thing proving what greedy losers they are.

Alice Cooper and Black Sabbath invented heavy metal, the rest are just copycats.

wow! what a concert that would have been, thanx for your comment].......[ in august 1988 ,the monsters of rock festival came to foxboro stadium in massachusetts and i saw ...dokken,metallica,scorpions and van halen all on the same day! if judas preist was there instead of van halen then that concert would have been unbeatable, but at least i was able to see eddie vanhalen, certainly one of the great guitarists...

If I could only listen to one of these bands for the rest of my life, I would choose Metallica's catalog over Maiden's.

At the same time, if I had to choose for one of these bands to vanish from the face of the Earth from this moment forward, I would also choose Metallica.

Metallica's best stuff is better than Maiden's best (IMO), but Maiden has never done anything to piss on their own legacy the way Metallica has. So Maiden can keep on keeping on as far as I'm concerned.
