On August 2nd at 0619 UT, an M1-class solar flare was launched almost directly at the Earth. ETA, should reach Earth on August 5th at 0300 UT plus or minus 7 hours. This may provide a beautiful aurora borealis.

A 3-dimensional model is provided here. If anyone knows how to post this , I’ll give you a star!

I saw this in the news earlier, I was wondering when I would see a post about it. That is definitely interesting. The sun has certainly had a lot of activity in recent years and it only seems to be getting worse. Then again I have no data from the previous 4 billion years so I guess I cannot say if it is at its worst.

Awesome and thanks for the post and pic. It is due to some of the more knowledgeable members here that I have learned more about the sun! This should make for some spectacular lights. Wish I lived that north!

With our luck in the state of Iowa, it'll be cloudy that day, and the only thing I'll see is a bunch of grey...gloomy mush. In fact, that's exactly what they're forecasting. Am a bit interested though as to whether or not my internet will decide to stop working like it did the last time there was solar activity.
Not that they're related of course.

Seing as we had an X.2 class hit us last year, I don't actually think we are In any danger with Solar flares, and deffintly not with an M class, but I'l be looking at the sky's for sure, thanks.

I have to ask - how to do that?
when you select 'image" buttion it asks for URL and shows in post as a link

- how do you get the image in your post?

I found a trick.

copy the atsimg url from your media page (it appears beneath your picture, this allows the picture to 'appear' but wont allow you to scroll left and right), paste it. Post it. Then go back in and edit out the 'ats' letters and for some reason it allows the picture to not only stay there but also scroll left and right.

Comprehende?

the atsimg URL, not the normal one. Although paste it straight into your post, not using the image button.

it will look like atsimg/blah blah blah /atsimg

Looks like Mercury will deflect small portion of the flare.
