When he pulled the trigger on his silenced rifle in a darkened bedroom in Pakistan and shot a tall, unarmed man with a straggly beard in a prayer cap and shalwar kameez, he ended a nine-year manhunt for Osama Bin Laden, the man who claimed 2,973 lives on September 11, 2001.

But no-one - not even President Barack Obama - will ever know the name of that SEAL, nor of the comrade who wrapped Bin Laden's wives in a huge bear hug and dragged them aside in case they were wearing suicide bomb vests, knowing he would absorb most of the blast and save the men behind him.

According to the article in this week's New Yorker, it also emerged 'there was never any question of detaining or capturing' Bin Laden - even though the White House always insisted the terror leader would not have died if he'd surrendered.

It also revealed that the SEALs were not wearing cameras on their helmets, and Mr Obama and his colleagues spent nearly 25 minutes anxiously waiting to hear from the 23 SEALs, one translator and a Belgian Malinois dog named Cairo who were engaged in the covert raid to kill the Al Qaeda mastermind.

They had begun planning some kind of raid in late 2010, soon after agents first discovered the compound where they believed Bin Laden was hiding, according to a senior operations officer 'deeply familiar' with the raid.

I'm telling you... if you have any interest in this story, you have to read this complete article.

First thing you'll notice that they is the great job the Seals did. But, you will notice even more how almost ALL the details the Obama administration told us.... have been.... shall we say-less than honest.

They DIDNT watch it go down. Anyway, I think it is a shame the Navy Seals can't be identified-officially. We won't know for many years to come... only rumors and speculation until then. Just keep you eyes on the Navy's promotions list....

Anyway a great story and one that actually makes more sense.

Firstly.. For reasons that should be obvious they can't name the seal. He and his family would be targets for extremists and sympathisers, 1-0 to America killing obl... 1-1 when the extremists kill the guy that killed obl, and maybe his family too.

Also I will never believe the official story put out concerning this series of events..

Interesting anon, however; I don't know if this is true, nor do you. In fact, I don't think we will know the real truth in our life times. How many variations of this story are circulating already? We can't trust or believe our government, our media, the internet, and really nothing unless we can touch it and see it with our own eyes and even then...is that reality?

Yes, of course. But, the "other side" will say that it is because they broke laws etc and they should be able to hvae access to him -legally, to potentially bring an International Law suit against the US?

I do agree but the Seals are, and have been targets. They didn't need to kill OBL to become targets etc.

It's for the best that their identities are not made public knowledge. If they were made public not only would that paint a target on them but their family members as well.

Can we expect T-shirts to be on sale soon with the same quote from the Seal emblazoned across it?

As an aside, I read the replies to the Daily Mail article, and this one - from an "andrew, swansea" - caught my eye (my emphasis):

The US top brass actually wanted Delta Force to carry out the raid but after Team 6 had embarrassingly killed Linda Norgrove the previous september, they were convinced the let Team 6 "save face" and do the mission. Delta force aren't human, which is why there was a Delta team on standby the entire mission in one of the waiting back up helicopters to make sure nothing went wrong.

What does that mean? Is he inferring that they act like animals, or something else? Interesting description all the same...

Anyone in the coalition military is a target.. But imagine if they got the actual one that killed bin laden.
They would hail this as some sort of victory for Islam.. I'm sure it would be a used as an effective propaganda tool against the evil infidels.

To me, this is all but ironclad truth. No way they did'nt get rid of him years ago.

No offense to the OP, I know you are just reporting news that you heard, so I am not shooting the messenger. But it sure seems that any mainstream article relating to Osama belongs in the hoax bin on ATS. Reading that article made me cringe how they think they can fabricate such a ridiculous story and keep changing it, and people keep buying it.

This story, like all bull# "ops" stories will follow the same pattern most likely. They'll give details down to the second of the SUPER-SECRET-COVERT-OPS operation but ask a simple question like "can you prove it was Bin Laden?", you'll get "sorry, that is classified" (read: No, we can't)

The whole thing was a media PR stunt. That's why there were so many conflicting stories about the incident. No pics of the cadaver? Burial at sea? For an extreme islamist? Does OBL have doubles?

I don't buy the 'official story' as many folks do. Bhutto was assassinated a few short weeks after her indications about the death of OBL. The PTB were still using OBL as a political ploy to perpetuate the Al-CIAda myth and the global war on terror.

We won't know anything about the SEAL-team members as it was more than likely a mission with different objectives beyond our understanding. Why do you think they dumped the body so fast?

Its a weekly magazine, not a daily paper, thus the date.
