How will this reality pill go down the hatch of Obama's supporters.

The Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee John Conyers (D-Mich.) said that President Barack Obama proposed cuts to social security in the debt limit negotiations, not congressional Republicans.

“Because everybody’s criticizing republicans. Guess what? Every Republican that’s in the Congress was legitimately elected like all of us – that was a choice that voters made,” said Conyers when speaking with the Out of Poverty Caucus at the Capitol on Wednesday.

Plain as day!!

“Now, whether they still made it wisely or they still stick to it remains to be seen but I say we’ve got to educate the American people at the same time that we educate the president of the United States because the Republicans, the Speaker Boehner or Majority Leader Cantor did not call for social security cuts in the budget deal – the president of the United States called for that and my response to him is to mass thousands of people in front of the White House to protest this.”

Please keep this little detail in mind when the fingers begin to point to the right!!!!

Wow, I guess the 'Honeymoon' is truly over!

John Conyers calling for massed protesters..... against the presidents decision!

Hmmmm.

You speak of Obama supporters.... who might that be? When John Conyers is calling for protests against the president's policy decisions?

John Boehner should have said to the public in response to that proposal: "We did not agree to Mr. Obama's proposal to cut Social Security spending because we do not believe that is essential to any debt deal while the President does".

Turn it around and put a nice cherry on top.

Lets say Obama did propose SS cuts......the Repulican would have gotten the blame when the stuff hit the fan over it. The dems may say they will go for certain cuts but they want the republicans to take the heat for it and in fact would be there to beat up the republicans with it after the fact....as if the dems were forced into this by the TP.

None of the things that come out of the play by play that happend during these negotiations is meaningful. Obama could have put social security on the table. He could have done that with significant conditions, in exchange for a 10% increase in marginal tax rates, or simply to place it on the table knowing that it would never pass the Senate. Why would he do that? To show that he is mature and responsible and willing to take a real stance. I sure the other side will indicate that at some point they put tax increases on the table. Its all showmanship at this point and the spin doctors are out in full force.

At the end, the results are what matters. Neither side got what they wanted. There were no meaningful cuts so the liberals won. There were no tax increases and the balanced budget amendment is on the table (for what thats worth) so the republicans won. All of it typical Washington BS

...or simply to place it (SSI cuts) on the table knowing that it would never pass the Senate. Why would he do that? To show that he is mature and responsible and willing to take a real stance. ...

whaa? mature & responsible...
on the contrary, Øbama sees the Social Security fund as a cash cow for his other agendas....
the current SS fund has always been solvent and continually brings in more revenue than it pays out...
the socialist president just wants to test the waters on making mandantory 'Austerity' cuts to social security payouts which will make tons of cash available to the general fund when the unemployment gets back to the previous norm of 5-6%.

at the current level, even with unemployment officially at 9.2% (in reality closer to 20%) the Social Security Fund takes in taxes at more than $53Bn per month... and pays out under $40 Bn per month---

FICA Tax Rates
Generally, FICA taxes are collected at a rate of 7.65% on gross earnings - earnings before any deductions. The breakdown of FICA is 6.2% for Social Security (Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance or OASDI) and 1.45% for Medicare.

2011 FICA Tax and Social Security Limits
•FICA Tax Rate = 7.65% (see note below)
•Social Security Limit = $106,800
•Maximum Social Security Contribution = $6,621.60 (employer) / $4485.60 (employee)
Note: In 2011, the FICA tax rate for employees was lowered to 5.65%. The employer tax rate remained unchanged, while the Social Security rate for employees was lowered to 4.20%.

finance.yahoo.com...

explain just why a cut is necessary? even with a 10 year projection of baby-boomers--- there is no guarantee that much of the boomers will live for decades of receiving SS old age checks...

So the bally-hooed 'deficit' of the SS fund figured to be some $5 Trillion...is just accounting BS

He should ececuitive order the 90% slashing of the presidential retirement perks that pay hundres of millions every year for ALL living, former presidents, security, offices & staff, travel, pension, etc etc etc

follow that with Austerity measures for all the former Congress/Senators that ammounts to hundreds of Billions in the same 10 years....

All I am saying is that the sound bites that come out have nothing what so ever to do with the actual intentions that were in the room at the time.

What ever the fiscal details are regarding social security or any other portion of the government is moot. Most of the folks in the country don't even know there is a social security trust fund. They just hear that Obama was willing to cut social security and they think "wow, he was really serious".

This is nothing but a big game.

Later you'll hear that the republicans put large defense cuts on the table. sure they did

This new info doesn't surprise me.

Anyone within Obama's "reach" is tossable.....

Well, that is any American. You Russian, China, Iran, Syria and others need not worry.

But...but Social Security is an Insurance and alllll the money is in a Trust Fund.....how can Obama cut it?

I'm being sarcastic.

Palau was supposed to get their last free check from the US in 2009 and be set free.

Obama gave them $250 million and free money until 2034 from us.

That's where your Social Security money went.

Let's see...the GOP proposed ending Social Security and giving that money to Wall Street to look after and in response President Obama offered keeping and reforming Social Security and that is the spin that CSN news came up with?

You do know there tagline? Right there at the top of the page? The "Right" News, "Right" now.

We are under a "Lunocracy" and being governed by the Lunatic fringe right, where the most modest of concessions to their draconian demands are immediately contorted and regurgitated for consumption by like minded folks without the capacity to think outside the realm of idealogogy.

Try this. If cuts to Social Security is Pres. Obama's wish, does that mean he is not a "Socialist"? That he is in agreement with the GOP party leaders? I can smell the logic centers of your brain smoking from the stress.

surprise surprise!!! not!!!

cutting social security after 3 years of no cost of lving raising comes as no shocker.

no one on the left of me can ever convince me that obama or the left give a crap about people.

the only thing they care about is their own power and control at the expense of whoever gets in their way.

Clearly you failed to read the comments of D-Rep John Conyers and would rather attack the source. Did you link to the source and watch the interview. Doesn't seem like it.

I believe the last time the GOP had a solid bill to privatize SS was under GW Bush back in 2005 and it failed. How could "President Obama" have saved SS back then when he was not president?? Unless you are referring to the SAFE Act of 2007 (failed) and the SAFE ACT of June 2011 which has no legs. Small bill with only one sponsor.

So please share the Obama's details on reforming SS because I am not aware of his secret plans because he has not announced any other than little nuggets as part of his pitch. Obama, from what I know, is proposing significant reductions in Medicare spending and for the first time is offering to tackle the rising cost of Social Security. How?? I don't know. The push is on for a rapid vote and I doubt that we discover the details until after the vote. Sound Familiar?

Furthermore, Obama is in bargaining mode and is desperate to get this monkey off his back so he can get back on the campaign and fundraising trail.

Why do you call him a socialist when he is really a collectivist?

This is nothing new. He had already put them on the table earlier in negotiations.

What's going to happen now?

The special committee that they are setting is up is going to recommend changing how much benefits seniors receive, and it's also going to raise the age you can draw from 65 to 67.

There are some Democrats completely against this, and I'm betting there are some Republicans who also wouldn't dare voting on a such a measure.

In any regard, the elderly, sick, and poor are going to have to take the hits to pay for tax cuts that were never actually payed for...along with 2 wars.

Many of the posters here sat idly by as Bush ran up the deficits, passed Medicare part D which has put it in huge debt. IMO I believe it was passed to destroy it.
