Today's domestic conservative/fundamentalist political and social movements present a clear (though horrifically distorted) picture of sexuality. It's a narrative of danger and, therefore, of fear; a narrative of sin and, therefore, of self-destructiveness. Erotophobes typically describe their fear in socially acceptable terms: protecting children, supporting marriage, preventing disease, honoring women, sympathizing with the problematic "male sexual psyche".
But they really fear sexuality, as they understand it--its awesome power, the temptation to sin, the inevitable destructive decision-making surrounding it, the clear distinction between acceptable activities and unacceptable activities. And so they have launched a War on Sex. Not just their own sexuality-everyone's. Their goals are consistent, their strategy coherent. They can frame it in any civic language they want, but it's actually a War on Sex.
The age group with by far the largest number of convictions for sex offenses are people between 14 and 20 years old. These are, almost all of them, consensual acts of sex between kids with somebody who is about 2 or 3 years younger than them. There are 19,000 minors on sex offender registries nationally. 19,000! Some of these people are as young as 11 years old.
Kids are being arrested for taking naked pictures of themselves—this is called sexting—and sending them on their cellphones to their friends. So the person can be a perpetrator and a victim of child pornography production at the same time! Then the friends who receive the images are now in possession. Being caught for child pornography is no small thing. It is a federal crime and the penalties for it are four times higher, in general, than they are for murder. So if a kid gets prosecuted for one of these things they are in deep trouble and, as with all sex crimes, they will be on a sex offender registry afterwards.
As the above link also explains, the government is constantly expanding the legal definition of "childhood" because this is an emotional trigger-word that allows them to get away with criminalizing entirely healthy and safe behaviours. I speak now only to the reasonable people reading this post; is it not conceivable that a "child" could engage in healthy sexual activity? Do you have any knowledge, any memory, any experience that vindicates this? Think about statistics; children as young as 12 are engaging in sex more and more frequently, or at least are becoming more open and honest with investigators and pollsters. Are they all being abused, or are they enjoying it? We must think about these things that may offend our sensibilities, because to let our wimpy morals get in the way is to let the more insidious agenda win in this war.
What do they learn from it? As one kid who went through this said, "I learned that sex is bad."

Those are rates from 2006. Like I said, they are receding.
Try again.

I totally dig it, bro. The cosmic union vibe is nice, but it's not the only thing. As the old hedonists would say, "if it feels good, this is a sure sign that it is Good." Enjoying mutual pleasure is a way to embrace what is good and right and its just an intellectual or spiritual exercise to bring in the cosmic union thing.
My partner and I both dig the cosmic union vibe, and it is awesome in the old meaning; it inspires wonder and spiritual ecstasy. I'm not going to look down on plain old great sex (how could I!?) but I definitely recommend treating it like a sacrament! It's a shame that our society has stripped away and muddled whatever healthy sexual habits it once encouraged. Reading the Kama Sutra (the phenomenal, illustrated Deepak Chopra adaptation is linked in the OP, iirc) is a lot of fun. The paintings are gorgeous and deeply erotic.
P.S. I am glad I went with the rhetoric that I did in the OP. MasterGemini and Adyta, well-meaning though they [may] be, are proof positive that the War on Sex is working. I appreciate your tolerant and patient responses to my deliberately exclusive OP.
P.P.S. It feels so good to meet another logic hawk on ATS!edit on 30-7-2011 by SmedleyBurlap because: (no reason given)

The sexualization of children has paced the increase in childhood pregnancies. When older folks go after these children they take away the child's ability to experience and learn these things on their own.
