The ceilometer has a powerful invisible laser which is shot up into the air constantly, and bounces of cloud bases, to give an automated height in feet...

...and causes chemtrails. HAHA Good thread. Very cool.

How any of this relivent, I thaught this was a conspiracy website, not show and tell.

Personally I think it's great that Oz decided to make this thread. It's pretty cool to know what type of equipment is used for testing the different areas of weather related phenomenon really, and others in this thread have shown they feel the same way. It's not "show and tell" or anything like that exactly.. it's an education thread. This can of course only a good thing, surely?

So, there's no need to complain or anything.. learning's fun.

Also, too many times in the past people have made mistakes when discussing weather related phenomenon and then when presented with an explanation, It's been rejected. At least now we have proof, yes proof, that Oz is to be taken seriously with what he says in weather related threads (especially HAARP threads where people seem to believe any adverse weather or odd cloud formation is caused by it.
) as he actually knows what he's talking about - It's his job after all.

Thanks Oz,very informative thread.
Thank you for taking the time and show us what you do.

I was wondering, do does radiosondes get retrieved or are they disposable?
What is the avarage airtime/height the balloons get?

Thanks,
OnlyLove.

Pretty cool stuff Oz,thanks for the presentation

So, this is somewhat relevant, there was a discussion on the board recently about 'record' rainfall and floods in Australia, and I know you guys have had your share of floods, but is this year an all time record for rainfall and floods for you all, or just a heavy year of precipitation? Has there been any other weather anomalies that unique in any way? I am trying to gain some perspective on the global scene of weather, and decide if anything is super unusual or just within the extreme range of things considered normal?

Peace,
spec

This is really cool Oz! I love seeing all those instruments.

One of the things I wanted to be growing up was a meteorologist so this has been really fun to read.

Gday Oz
Fellow West Aussie myself Id like to say great thread.
Many questions to ask but Im curious about the ballons.
When they land do you go pick them back up?
Being so close to the airport do they get in the way of the planes?
Where did you study>?I cant imagine there being many job opening in Perth for meterologists?
Is there a weather station in Jandakot I work right next to that airport and I havnt seen any balloons
How high do they go?
Sorry maybe to many questions at once. But thanks for the photos and info.
Very interesting

Good to see someone from my side of the country on ATS,also showing your work and what it consists of,very interesting.

Always wondered how some things are measured like weather, the methods used and such.

Thanks again OzWeatherman.

HA, I knew it, weathermen just use crystal balls, the rest of the equipment is just to make it look scientific

But seriously, it's great to see the equipment you actually use and the explanations to go with it, great thread s&f

Great thread, Oz. I did alot of weather study back in high school and in my latter years of high school, I interned at my local National Weather Service office. I interned there for about 2 years before they closed that office and many others around the country due to budget cuts.

I was to go to a prominent weather college (Northern Illinois University for those in the states) and had planned on getting a job at The Weather Channel. That was my plans, but life happened and those plans went down the drain.

But, I never stopped studying and being a fan of weather. Hell, there are many times I can predict the weather better than meteorologists who get paid to do that sort of thing every day.

Cheers!

The part of state were OZ is does not get floods at all as its way too dry in the south . Up North of the state it does get tropical rain storms .

Anyway. OZ. Is all the older but perfectly good equipment still in use for backup/verification purposes?

Well, what actually happens is that the automated data is taken as "real". The older, manual equipment is used for comparisons and backup data.

How high up do weather balloons go? And do they get tracked by other meteorological agencies other than that which launched them?

We aim for over 90,000ft (30km's). The higher they go up the better. There are however, many factors which will influence the height at which a weather balloon reaches. Our minimum height we have to reach is around 200hPa, otherwise the data will be voided, and we have to launch a second balloon.
