I know what you mean. Here in Quebec storms and winds usually come from NW, but some weird weather comes when in a matter of hours winds change
direction and comes from East. When that happens, we get really weird weather, strange snow crystals, and unusual conditions.
As for thin cloud layers yet you see lightning, it seems you experienced what we call here "eclairs de chaleur", meaning that these are lightning
which doesn't form in the heart of a cumulonimbus but actually forms out of thin air, due to heat differential.
You experienced both in a matter of minutes... Really weird.
