though it still needs to happen, or atleast the general rule of "spend less than you make" needs to be followed.

not as badly as having our priorities in line and using a little foresight and anticipating what the future impact of their policies will be!!!

last time the debt ceiling was being discussed, let's see, how did that one come down, oh ya....
while obama was starting another war, they were saying how if they didn't raise it, they wouldn't be paying the troops...ya, fine example of having our priorities straight!!
or, this time around, while they are saying that the social security checks might not be going out, well, our fine leaders in congress were sending invites to their buddies in congress for nice expensive trips, on taxpayer's dime, for multi-nation trips to europe over the forth of july weekend....
don't know if they went, since some in congress thought it would be better to spend the weekend there trying to come up with a way to gain access for the money for those trips!!!!
great priorities there!!

and well, then there is the impacts of their policies....
put the welfare people to work, don't matter how much they are earning, and well, we will pay them a little extra to cover their childcare needs, their clothing allowance, their transportation....
and well, they don't make enough to pay for their childcare even so, well...they get their paycheck, plus a bigger check from our gov't!!!

or, slap a cap on social security, after so much money, well, we just won't take anymore out in social security tax, and well, all those who were making more than that cap have been enjoying nice bonuses, pay raises, ect....
the rest of us, well, our wages have sat stagnant, or have decreased!!
which means, less money going into the fund!!

we need sane leadership more than we need anything else!!!

the only way I'd support a balanced budget ammendment that has an exemption concerning war is if it also has a stipualtion in it that the people will be able to vote within 30 days from the start of hostilities for or against said war, and if the answer the people give is no, then well, we don't have said war!!!
and even that isn't 100% perfect, since so much of the crap that is being dished out to us is pure and simple bs, and therefore, well, we can't make a sound decision based on bs!!!

I work for a company where our supervisor is great at lying about things. she has her favs, and well, they get the easiest jobs, the biggest jobs, ect....and well, I've done banners just about all day while others in the company have done these tiny little pennants that well, I could do about a hundred of them in an hour, where 28 banners can take me more than an hour to do!! and well, she also has a few other tricks to do...
since the bosses are mainly looking at the numbers at the end of the day, well, the raises are going to those who are getting the bigger numbers, and occasionally, us low numbered people will end up being taking into the back room and lectured as to why our numbers are too low...which of course, our supervisor has a million and one lies as to why they are so low....
well, there was a number of real problems that were present in the company that were being whitewashed away by her tactics....screens that were old and worn and therefore slowing us down, inks that were too think, ect....
I finally kind of blew up on the boss, almost got myself fire, but told him the TRUTH!!!
and well, they brought in someone just to watch us, and give them suggestions as to how to make things better and my truth was confrimed by him....
so, well, now we have better screens, our ink is thinner, and the workload is more evenly distrubuted....
the moral of the story is that nothing gets fixed till we come to terms with the TRUTH!!!
enough with the lies!!

Quoted for truth!!! Obama is the worst ever at this game. At least Bush did some things right. Ducks pie thrown at head, but he did.

So this is his fault? At least he is willing to compromise and Bonehner and the rest of his party only care about their parties agenda. Which is make more money for the elite and let corporations run the country into the ground. The conservatives of old would have been ashamed of the way these so called "republicans" are acting.

I don't think the republicans have a choice. The last election was a clear message from the people that we do not want taxes increased so wasteful spending can continue. Boehner knows this. I admire him for sticking to his position, especially since the media is making the Republican leadership into the villain of the hour.

I also think we have "compromised" ourselves INTO this problem. There comes a time to say NO MORE. I hope they KEEP SAYING IT.

The problem certainly didn't originate with Obama. I think both parties can take a share of the blame over the last decade. I'm just happy that we've finally realized that this path is unsustainable. There will never be enough tax revenue to fix the problem.

a good part of the problem was that the rich had more money than they knew what to do with, so they started gambling on weather or not us lowlifes would be able to pay our bills or not and well......
collapsed the housing market.....
so, well, since they have so much money that they are blowing the heck out of the world economy, I don't see how it harm anything to take a little more from them.....
now, taking the money from our seniors, would be in reality, A DEFAULT!! it would send a message around the globe that weather or not we pay the debt we owe them is kind of iffy, since well, we've already screwed over the one of the biggest holders of our debt, the social security fund!!
it would also send a massive jolt through our economy, more unemployment since the retirees wouldn't be retiring and leaving their positions open for the younger crowd, positions that are being filled now by elderly volunteers would no longer be volunteer positions, and well....less money flowing through the system....

wall street is doing fine in case you haven't noticed, the rich seem to have plenty of money to gamble away still...
main street is another story.....
all the cuts that they seem to want to make will be degrading main street more, while leaving wall street to flourish!!!

Does this mean the US now faces 'Armageddon'? To quote Mr Obama.

Anyone else notice he likes to make references to 'movies'?
- Lion King
- Superman
- Armageddon

He must be an avid watcher, suppose when you have nothing else to do you may as well watch a movie.

I am sick and tired of this notion that somehow reforming Social Security is going to put seniors on the street or "rob" seniors who have paid into the system. The same goes for Medicare.

How about having a bit of courage and call it like it is? Social security was a system designed to provide a safety net for elderly folks and those who for other reasons were unable to work. A responsible thing for the government to do. A couple of things have happened since then:

A significant number of workers have retirement assets of their own in addition to social security. Mutual funds, 401Ks, defined contribution benefit plans and the like were not in place anywhere near the level they are today.

Folks are living longer and thankfully due to medical advances are robust far longer than they were when the program was started.

Medical care is far more advanced and far, far more expensive than it was ever dreamed of being when programs like medicare were designed. When Medicare was designed noone envisioned this nonsense of tossing several hundred grand at an old person to keep them alive for 2 years.

How about having a bit of guts and call it like it is with a reasonable solution (for both medicare and social security)

1. If you have a net worth, exclusive of your primary residence over x you won't get social security, period. Have a sliding scale up to the point of zero

2. If you have annual income over x you don't get social security. Again a sliding scale

3. Benefits will be at maximum upon reaching 70 years of age

Do that and be done with it. Folks paid into the system? Cool, give them back exactly what they put in which is a fraction of what they will pull out if they retire at the current age and live to the currently expected life span.

Lets have some guts and do what everyone knows needs to be done. Here is an example:

You have a gent who was an officer in the military for 30 years. He's retiring with a fantastic pension (which he earned) and is knocking down $60K/year in his retirement benefits. He has free medical care via the VA. He owns two houses, a primary and a vacation condo in Florida.

Are you suggesting that the federal government should give this gent another $1,500 to $2,500/year? Why? We simply can not afford it and he can have a fantastic retirement on what he has?

He paid into the system? Who cares? He is getting something in return. He already received the insurance that were he to need it, social security would be there for him. He does not need it, but he had that insurance. He does not have poor elderly folks warehoused in government homes or living in tent cities.

Why is everyone so hung up on " they paid into the system crap" Everyone who pays taxes pays into a system and don't get what they expect out of it, by in large. If you are that hung up on giving them back what they put in, then cut them a check for that exact amount and be done with it.

Yeah American's are scared of paying taxes.

We had Americans work for us and boy they hate to "contribute" in taxes to the country.

They always leave after 3 years because they would have to "contribute" to our society.

Seen it first hand in my work place which is not in America. Bascially they are greedy SOB's.

You're absolutely right, we don't like to pay taxes. We prefer to manage our own affairs rather than have the government be our parents and think that knowing our own circumstances better than the government enable us to make better choices for outselves than the government can. We have a constitution based specifically on limited government. Something that the left in America hate, but that many of us cherish.

When we do pay taxes, we typically want to spend them closer to home where officials are more accountable to the residents and more knowledgeable of the local enironment than to the federal government which has a one size fits all approach that simply is ineffective in a large, regionally diverse country.

America since its founding has never been collectivist in nature.

Why by the way would you expect an American kid to pay taxes in a foreign country? Anyway, simple solution. Don't hire any

Yeah right. Killing their own people? 30 million muslims in the country? Atheist killers of girl children? Please, China has nothing on the US. Even if we spontaneously combust and every American turns to dust, we will be remembered for thousands of years as the coolest and freest country ever. China has no way to stop the freedom lovers in their country, and guess who freedom lovers love? That's right, the USA. Even if we have assheads who sink our ship, everyone knows they did it on their own, without the consent of working class Americans, so we are cool, regardless of what the morons in charge do. "Chariman Mao"?? Pffft. That mass murderer is not even 1/1000th as cool as Abraham Lincoln. FACT.

You are exactly right. This entire notion of China as this flawless nation that will run the world is nonsense. The Chinese leadership hold on to power through intimidation and the jack boot. Their infrastructure is falling apart do to shoddy materials and workmanship. Half of the venues built for the Olympics are not being used because they are already in disrepair. The largest of this infrastructure disaster is the Three Gorges Dam, first thought to be a marvel of engineering and an effort for which the Chinese essentially bulldozed entire communities looks to be potentially failing (great informative thread on ATS about that).

The Chinese have a corrupt central government, no respect for privacy rights, is one of the most ethnocentric societies on the planet. All of the investment banks opened up offices in China in the late 90s and early 00s. Most have pulled out. Why? Too corrupt, to closed of a system, too much theft of intellectual property. As India got to be too expensive for outsourcing folks began looking at other places and, of course China came to the top of the list. That was short lived. No integrity on the privacy of the work, poor quality of work, poor customer service. That experiment is done. Folks have moved on to places like Poland and Vietnam.

What do the Chinese make that has a global market that was actually invented in China? They're the best in the world at making the toys you get in Happy Meals, but not a whole lot else. At some point when you beat a population down they lose the ability to think creativity and thus innovate and the Chinese are well beyond that.

The leadership is hanging on by a thread, attempting to manage the electronic age and the jack boot, but ultimately the jackboot will lose. Within the next 50 years China will either have the most violent revolution seen in 200 years or a total transformation of their system of government. I'd bet on the former.

India is a far bigger threat from an economic perspective in the long term than China

the problem is they will allow the x amount of dollars fall way below the amount that all those benefits amount to, thus, just redetermining just who should be living the "poor" life up a little on the income scale!!!

Case in point to support my earlier post. Chinese bullet train just derailed and fell off a bridge.

It would be fascinating to hear what actually goes on in China. We hear about 1/100th of the horror shows.

What do you mean "no good"? I say let the house of cards come crashing down!!!!

That being said, I agree with other posters. This is all part of the dog and pony show. Enjoy it. In the end they will raise the debt ceiling while attempting to allow politicians to save face to a certain extent so they can keep this 2 party nonsense seem like some type of reality to the sheep.

This is all about demonizing a Democrat so the public will vote for a Republican who will continue the same agenda that we have seen from both parties. People need to stop falling for this misdirection and start keeping their eyes on the ball.

Obama is an idiot if he thinks Republicans will get the blame. Of course I have not ruled this out. The guy in charge always gets the blame come election time if the economy is crummy, and guess what, he is in charge and doing a poor job. The democrats lost bad in the last election and the people are becoming much more fiscally conservative. If he has any sense, he would stop disagreeing and just cut some spending and raise the debt ceiling without any demands for tax increases. If people don't get paid, Obama will be blamed. He's the guy in charge and that is what people will remember. That and that the democrats insisted on tax increases before agreeing to any budget deal. There might be a few people who claim the tea party people insisted on no new taxes but there is a growing movement of Americans fed up with our government increasing our taxes and spending more of our money leaving less for all of us who pay the taxes.
