I think the USA is like the "black sheep" of colonial children...

No one wants to really take responsibility for it, groans whe it turns up at family reunions and somehow it always manages to embaress everybody....

(only joking guys - just trying to inject some humour)

If you believe the conspiracy theories, we already own your arse.

We're that "bad" you haven't even noticed

DISCLAIMER: I personally do not subscribe to such theories, but many round these parts do...

You seem to be totally missing the point.. The whole England-Ireland thing dates back to then, has it's root causes then and is directly linked to those events. I wasn't saying that the Normans should get the all the blame, but had it not been for the Norman colonisation, the whole of the British Isles would have a different history altogether. Looking at isolated events in History without appreciating the root causes going back centuries is naive.

It was Norman Kings that led England to war with the Scots, Welsh and Irish who, by and large, the English had lived peacefully side by side for centuries before hand. This laid the groundwork for everything that was to come

I do find it ironic, however, that you would willingly dismiss historical events as irrelevant, but then proceed to bang on about historical events that perceive to be important. You cannot pick and choose what history you like and don't like.

Do point out the "tyranical dictators loyal to the crown" we left behind though in the other colonies. Should be worth a laugh.

Your Knowledge of Irish history is lacking. The Normans caused very few problems in Ireland, they only took one province and that was done primerily through marriage. Strongbow the Norman Earl of Pemroke in Wales married the daughter of the king of Leinster. They built strongholds throughout Leinster but maintained decent relations with most of the Irish clans. for 300 years until the 15th century the Normans still only controled Leinster and the east coast.Problems in Ireland only started in Tudor times and came to a head juring the Cromwellian Invasion. Cromwells penchent for sacking entire towns and killing every last man woman and child , along with every clergy man in the entire country is what cemented true nationalism in Ireland. The Normans like the native population were catholic which allowed them to blend in quite well, becoming more Irish than the Irish themselves as they say.added to this was the fact that for 300 years before the Norman invasion the east coast of ireland was under Viking and Danish control, so the Dominant Irish clans had become acustomed to not controling the east coast,Which is why most of the Clan strongholds were in the West side of the country.

As for the rest of the world yes, despots and dictators were put into most ex colonies and insure that British interests in those countrys were looked after. This was even done in the USA after its Independance. in third world regions any leaders not subservient to the crown were quickly taken down.To say that this is not true is made even more comical by the fact that it is still that way today.

I have been thinking this for a while. Uk colonized such a large part of the world. These countries had their infrastructure built by the British and their system of goverment modelled on the UK. For a while they thrived under British colonial rule. However post WW2 when many of the old colonies were given independence, these same countries have gradually let their infrastructure collapse due to lack of finance and returning to their old ways. Take India for example. In the era of the Raj, extensive improvements were made to bring the country kicking and screaming into the real world. In Mumbai city wide drainage was built. Adequate at the time, no further improvements have been made. Every Monsoon the city literally floods. Under colonial rule this would never happen. And its not just India, the list goes on and on. Take a look at this list of commonwealth countries:-

•Canada

The UK really needs to get back in controll of these countries and establish a proper rule, since it has become obvious that they cant do it by themselves. Maybe we would get a bit more stability in the world.
And before anyone makes some claim about commonwealth countries not wanting to be repatriated to UK, you better realise most of the population loved British rule, and were actually gratefull for British colonisation and what it brought. They never wanted British rule to end.
Long live the Queen!. Britannia rule the waves!

Since when is Canada not doing well? We're thriving, especially economically in comparison to many other countries. Our banks are strong, we have work, more in some provinces than others.

I deleted the long list of other countries, because I don't know enough about their situations.

Our infrastructure is getting worked on constantly, due to the cold, we have to work on our roads and check our bridges and rail lines every summer.

Even our recent disasters, of some forest fires and floods have been handled very efficiently, people and their pets getting the help they needed.

This year, even our tourism is expected to be thriving, partly due to Will and Katherine having their honeymoon here. The world got to see this big, beautiful country, at its best, through the eyes of many international reporters.

Maybe the US was not listed because it never was just a UK colony... Or perhaps it's because the US evolved high above UK potential in all fronts.

Not much point re colonizing the Americas to be honest, there wont be much left of it soon after the big one hits.
