BP said on Monday that a pipeline at its 30,000 barrel per day Lisburne field, which is currently closed for maintenance, ruptured during testing and spilled a mixture of methanol and oily water onto the tundra.

The methanol-produced water mix has spread into wet tundra as well as onto a gravel pad, bringing risks to slow-growing vegetation, DeRuyter said.
"You have actively growing plants and they're very susceptible to the contaminants," he said.

The pipeline will also have to be dug up to allow for an investigation into why it failed, he said.

before all the apathetic trolls come in. yes this is a small amount, this is not oil but it is just as destructive to our environment.
I DO care about our earth more than most, and will not stop.

these oil spills WILL become more frequent just for the simple fact that all of the infrastructure is over 50yrs old and one thing engineers seem to overlook when inspecting/renewing operating Lic. that is wear and tear fatigue and natural degradation steel does not last very long in frozen conditions .. concrete only lasts 100yrs if mixed and cured right. we are coming up on these time tables fast...


right now they dont even know why the leak occurred, hopefully they cant just sweep this under all the useless headlines and we can find the cause.

Thank you for the news story, and the fact that the pipes need replaced. Didn't know they built the infrastructure to last on a small time scale without having in place a plan to replace it. They have more than enough money to do so. BP is the loser. We are also the losers anytime the environment is harmed.

Seriously how is BP still in business? Their track record is lousy and they continue to care less about their surrounding environment.

If the snow or permafrost was melting, this would also cause problems with pipes. It seems like we should be replacing or upgrading our infrastructure, but in the current political environment this does not seem like it will happen.

The politicians seem to have other priorities, or maybe they are just fixing things as they fail. This does not seem like a good plan as property and the environment will continue to be damaged.

I remember methanol being in gasoline till about 1997 or so. it was banned, becuase it was found to be THAT carrcinogenic* from what ive learned, metahnol is REALLY nasty stuff, and ive heard the same thing from 1 auto mechanic i knew, and other poeple on car/truck oil maintenance forums. it can end up in the darnest of places ( usually tap water), underground water and sit n travel and contaminate. the EPA banned it it was that nasty of stuff. as far as im concerend, even though its considered a little leaked out..its in the environment now* and over time, will travel where the oil and water takes it to settle.
50 years old, hugh? billion dollar inndustry, and they cannot do their own maintenances, tjhat are supposed to be required ide imagine, by federal law. thas how it usualy works. mobil, BP, ect have so much moneyt aht made them powerful, thier kinda untouchable..the feds would rather go after the gas station owneer first, for price fixing a few cents than go after BP for not fixing what they probably knew was going to break sooner or later. Didnt some court rule the taxpayers were gunna pick up the huge tab bill for the gulf cleanup BP Horizon caused last year?
