This is a must see....

These are pretty amazing images...

I wonder if ET [If they exist] can tell from the amount of traffic just how interconnected we have become as a species?. Another thought that crossed my mind after viewing these stunning images was if somehow it will become self aware?

Stunning Maps Visualizing Twitter, Flickr Usage (PHOTOS)

Programmer Eric Fischer has created maps that visualize Twitter and Flickr usages around the world. Fischer created the images by taking the geo-tagging location posts from the two websites and plotting them on a map.

The maps help one to find out where people are located when they post tweets on Twitter or upload a photo to Flickr, the photo-sharing website. The California-based programmer got the Flickr data from the search application programming interface (API), while Twitter data was from the streaming API.

In the image, Red dots are locations of Flickr pictures. Blue dots are locations of Twitter tweets. White dots are locations that have been posted to both. Fischer tweeted: "I used a program that I wrote specifically for the purpose."

ETA: Removed lower quality images that didn't do them justice.

I asked the same thing.
Hopefully they'll release some of other locations, besides London, NY and Tokyo later.

I thought those sites were blocked in China though.. maybe they can use Flickr. I know Facebook is banned. I've seen a similar map of the world but using Facebook profiles and it's so interesting to see how many there are and then have China just be completely barren. Crazy..

I'd love to see a close-up of LA... not because it's where I live, but because of how spread out it is and mostly because of how many 'tweets' all these hollywood losers send out everyday. Come to think of it, they should just map a close-up of Lindsey Lohans residence

I hear ya.
I've seen those as well. These newer images speak volumes though on how the rest of the modern world is so intertwined it's almost like a self perpetuating entity.

Have you ever flown into L.A. at night?
Visually it's like first flying over and then into a giant Circuit board.

TRON?!?.

I have a map that shows the lights on Planet Earth at night, which looks somewhat similar. I look at it all the time. Possibly my favorite map.

I am a big map fan.

I made a high res copy of that map you're talking about and got it printed out 4' x 2' 5" laminated that and a high resolution of Saturn as well.

I'm a map nut as well. I love Google Earth I remove all the designations and just look at the topographic data and geography.

I wasn't going to go into the "Social issues" but yes it's a sprawling mess. But it is visually beautiful at night from the air with all the lights and cars flowing in all directions.

Definately interesting pictures....I find it kind of intriguing that the middle of america seems to lack in dots compared to the coast areas.... I'm not from america, and am not sure about population density....is there that many less people in the midland, or is it that they appreciate a less technological way of life?

That map is a bit misleading.

If we were to just view population densities it would appear much less dense. Most of that activity in those images are along roads were people are on the move which skew a real and accurate measure of populations dispersal.

Doesn't really prove much though. Surely everyone already knows that internet usage is highest in cities, and that's all these maps really show. Sure you can drill down to the granular detail too see a higher percentage in the more afluent areas, but again it's nothing we already don't know, rich people have more access to technology.

Wow, those are some beautiful images. It's kinda neat to see where people are the most when they use those sites. I just wonder how much of the brightest areas are due to them being cities and how much of it is due to them being tourist locations.

Who is trying to prove anything?
I and I'm sure others would simply be interested in the subject as is.

To me this map is no different than the one that shows the light-pollution map, same thing really isn't it? Population generates technology. Richer pop generate more.

In actuality what it reminded me of last while posting this thread was a scene from Star Trek of the Borg Earth and the possible direction the Planet as a whole could be headed.
