the epi centre was not close to the chunnel, it was south of portsmouth. I live about 5 miles west of portsmouth and slept straight through it, my son didn't notice it, nor did other friends.

Im gutted I didn't experience it! :-(

No must admit I didn't feel it either and I'm just a wee be further west on the Sunny South Coast in Dorset.

have read the papers and apparently it seems a few coffee cups shook this morning, nothing more! Wondering if there are likely to be after shocks? Anyone know?

Just wanted to clarify - Folkstone Kent (which I believe is where that EQ happened) is just over the heel of Britain going north wards - probably more North Sea than English Channel. I know we are are a small island but everything is relative.

There was panic in France after the earthquake this morning due to fears the Chunnel would be closed, cutting off the main French escape route to England.

If the French were experiencing any panic it would because the asylum seekers would be trapped their side of the chunnel.

But I digress and am off topic.

how far inland does the tunnel go, and if the worst happened would that part of the country be flooded. doesnt bear thinking about.

To flood anywhere inland, the tunnel entrance would have to be below sea level.

Water doesn't flow up hill.

Try using a hose pipe and turn the end vertical..........if there is enough force behind it you will find that water can very easily go up and therefore go uphill !!! Great video I really enjoyed watching it

Well is this not a turn up for the books. And there was a scientist spokesperson for the government just saying last week, that the UK is not prone to be hit either by a major earthquake or a tsunami. He was wrong on both accounts. Biggest in 300 years and the mini Tsunami which hit Cornwall. Hmm I would assume they will not reconsider building nuclear plants now.

wow...i would have thought aftershocks were pretty rare in the UK???

Certainly the "big" one we had in the midlands a couple of years ago didnt have one.

I remember waking up in the middle of the night and hearing the rumbling and feeling the shake - thinking blimey an earthquake - and promptly falling back to sleep again!

I wonder if they will be carrying out checks on the Channel tunnel to see if there is any defects due to this mini earthquake and the aftershock.

Funny times we are living in.

The British are typical, anything happens, oh oks falls back asleep again

It was the same when a tornado funnel occurred out in the English channel, a couple of years ago, people just stood there in awe of it . Not thinking they maybe should move out of the way.

Even if the tunnel was detroyed, what would it matter anyway?

assuming that no people were in there of course.

I liked the tunnel while it lasted anyway..

You will be fine, just remember if you burn easily just take strong sun burn cream with you.
As for the Tunnel true if it goes down, so be it never used it anyways .

Where have you got the idea that this is the biggest quake in 300 years?
Here are a couple from recent years that were bigger:

Folkestone, 2007, Mag 4.2
Dudley, 2002, Mag 4.7

As for the UK not being hit by tsunami:
Bristol Channel floods of 1607 may have been Tsunami

A number of other tsunami events to have affected the UK can be found in this list.

I suggest the UK govt hires some spokespersons who actually know what they are talking about...
