I don't know why this made news in in the UK, the biggest police state that exists. The title is is great, a woman who committed a misdemeanor is almost defiantly going to go to jail, from the title. THE TITLE!!!! This woman made a mess out of her front yard. I'm sorry, but if i owned a home in this neighborhood i would pattision for the mess to be removed. It's a crap state with with little property value to begin with, and she want to move in and do the next door to me? Grow what ever you want in your front yard, good landscaping raises property value, what was down here is not good landscaping, its white trash front yard. I my self have been part of comunty gardens, and we made sure not to make it look like garbage. This article is a load of crap. This is a none issue, but It's pushed as if it is an issue.

I would like to welcome people to comment on this as much as possible

Just wanted to note that this isn't any sort of fight for freedom. when your white trash setup in your front yard effects the value of your neighbors property value things kinda change up. Allot of communities have parks or areas where there is open land. I've been apart of community gardens in these areas, or do it in YOUR OWN BACK YARD. Growing a white trash garden isn't the same as 2 guys who seem to have a relationship living to with one another and getting a misdemeanor for it, AND WHY THE HELL IS THE IDEA OF JAIL TIME BEING BROUGHT UP. I've committed misdemeanors, but have never been arrested, I've been spoken to buy cops, but what I was doing was the same as this. Not worth doing the paper work on. This is Fing FAIL on the owner of the house.

Ah, you misspeak because of your ignorance of the subject matter my friend. She did not wan't to have garden boxes in her front lawn but because of city work that tore up her yard which the city does not replace, she went an alternative path.

We are talking about Detroit here, there is not one house in that neighborhood that is completely sightly and I would know, I lived there most of my life. Nothing short of GOD himself could raise the property value there anyway. White trash front yard....? Lol, guess you don't make it to Detroit much......

This is less about what the yard looks like and more about government micro management. Sure, you could make an argument that it is an eye sore but then again, you could make an argument that this property, house and the yard it sits on belongs to these people and the government can shove there views about it up there anus.

Supposed to be a free country and all that... Remember?

Since when is growing a garden a "white trash" set up?

I think your viewpoint is very wrong..I hope she has a garden in the front and in the back yards.

hmmm i reluctantly have to agree.

i'm not for hating on anyone just for 'expressing themself' or whatever, but it kinda is a big deal if it ends up being detrimental to property value of the surrounding people who all have normal lives and dont want the value or desirability of their house slashed by some eyesore.

anyone who's ever lived in the real world has to understand this.

You lost me at describing her as "white trash." Sorry, so judgemental of you. If I were to say to you by your grammar and spelling you were "white trash" how would you feel? Judged, right off the bat. Have a great day!

Oh No! She upset a neighborhood with rules acting like a condo or housing association.

Will be she be charged with a misdemeanor for no white picket fence, the home paint is not neat and clean, had more than two cars or a car older than 5 years old in the driveway, the tree grew too big, more?

Actually those raised garden beds look neat, with the wood chips and all and not trashy. The neighborhood kids help her with the garden, that itself teaching and promoting a self sustaining attitude should be valued.

Where is there any "white trash" influence there? Are you stating that fruit-bearing plants are ugly while "decorative shrubs" are attractive? The other yards in the photos there look pretty dull, in my opinion. Nothing to redeem them and "raise property values", certainly.

Is there really a movement by the authorities to quash all individual expression in the US? If so, then by all means do require that people live in neighborhoods that can be easily replicated in construction paper by any three-year-old. But how do you want people to enrich their minds and souls in that sort of environment? It starts at home.

Calling her yard white trash does nothing for your argument. I see nothing that screams trash in the photo I saw. She has a garden in tidy, raised planter boxes on her land that she pays taxes on. The only regulation she may have broken (It's debatable), is the planters and the garden are "Uncommon", and the regulation calls for things to be kept common obviously.

The system of appraising a home in Detroit is something I am unfamiliar with. I would, however, be highly suspect should her yard effect the housing value of her neighbors that dramatically considering the aesthetic damage was originally done by the city.. She simply made the best out of a bad situation.

Because she is refusing to pay a fine.
The jail time isnt for the garden, thats only a penalty of a fine. (Actually initially the penalty was NOTHING except a warning, which she refused to acknowledge.)

Such is why no one owns anything... We just hold on to it till we die and the government takes it back.

Not being able to do whatever you want with your property is simply stupid. Now, if I can smell a load of decaying trash, thats diffrent. or if you open a den for rats the size of dogs from a trashheap. But.. There has to be a limit somewhere, on both sides of that coin.

So, what gives you the right to say what someone's yard should look like.

Have you ever heard the phrase,

"Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder"

You know, I event seen your yard but I bet it would look like crap to me, you know why, because it probably has no personality of its own, you've probably just done the same of thing as everyone else in your neighborhood has.

And about the woman who owns the house, good for you actually doing something constructive and useful with your yard, all this "pretty" plants everyone else plants have no nutritional value.

Who is the government to tell me that I'm not allowed to utilize my yard for agricultural benefits.

The British are still about two decades behind America on race relations, They are still at the stage where they think racism is acceptable if it is against whites. This usually arises in a society that is not used to dealing with inter-racial issues...they feel if they overcompensate its better not to take a risk, but they don't yet realize that attitude creates big problems, too.

pics or it didn't happen.

what is an ugly garden?

maybe someone should help her?

i have 2 right in front of me, 1 is not so cool, the other is cool.

so what?

gardens can be quite beautiful, nice rows of veggies and when they flower it looks great.

it draws birds and other wildlife, better than a well cut lawn, imo.

If that is your idea of white trash, than you need to come to my town. Broken down couch on the front porch surrounded by beer bottles and piles of garbage in the front yard, surrounding the five rusting vehicles. They won't even get a citation unless they're leaking toxic waste or selling drugs.

Her front yard was torn up and she saw an opportunity to do something different. It was done tastefully and looks better than most peoples yards. What right does a city have to say that it has to be grass??? At my last house I didn't have grass in the front yard. It was landscaped with bark and flowering plants/ferns. According to the joker in the articel, I would have faced the same outcome there.

No, I do NOT think the woman who planted a very nice, well maintained garden in her front yard is wrong. I think a city employee who feels they have the right to harrass her because of it is!
